In the public health literature, it is generally assumed that the perception of "targeting" as positive or negative by the targeted audience depends on the product or message being promoted. Smoking prevalence rates are high among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals, but little is known about how they perceive tobacco industry targeting. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine faculty members' views of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and intersex individuals.
DESIGN AND METHODS: The study sample consists of 180 faculty members who agreed to participate in the study.
FINDINGS: The faculty members had positive attitudes towards homosexuals but were highly homophobic; furthermore, their responses to questions about their close social circle were severely homophobic.

The classical lesion of primary syphilis is a solitary, indurated, painless chancre. Atypical presentations, such as herpetiform ulceration, are well recognized. However, there are few references in the medical literature to primary syphilis presenting as balanitis or balanoposthitis. We report two cases of primary syphilitic balanitis in homosexual men.

The frequency of female-to-female HIV transmission was assessed among 960,000 female blood donors at 20 large U.S. blood centers during 1990. Of 144 HIV-seropositive women identified, 106 were interviewed. None of the interviewed women reported sex exclusively with women since 1978. Three seropositive women reported sex contact with women as well as with either bisexual men or men who had used i.v. drugs. In this large population, we identified no woman who was infected with HIV from sexual contact with another woman.

A diabetic patient presented with symptoms and laboratory findings compatible with atypical pneumonia. Despite appropriate antibiotic therapy, his dyspnea, arterial oxygenation, and chest roentgenographic findings worsened. Two clients troubled by preoccupying thoughts were treated by a version of thought-stopping described by Wolpe (1969) which has been infrequently reported so far. The frequency of spontaneous intrusive thoughts as they occurred within sessions was found to be a useful measure of clinical outcome, but it is suggested that careful control and definition of variations in procedure is necessary in order to eliminate spurious results. Treatment was found to produce an improvement which was maintained at follow-up.

Extragenital gonorrhea was seen in 65% of 54 cases of gonorrhea in 43 homosexual men attending a venereal diseases clinic between 1974 and 1977; in 21 cases the infection was extragenital only.
