Fear of Cancer Recurrence Before Treatment in Patients Newly Diagnosed With Breast Cancer: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a common psychological disorder among patients with cancer. In patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer, fear and concern about recurrence often influence treatment decision-making. However, the prevalence of FCR before treatment and its key risk factors-such as age, sleep quality, economic status, self-disclosure, and social support-remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe the prevalence and severity of FCR before treatment in patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer and analyze its predictive factors, thereby providing a sci

It's All in Your Head: A Case Report of Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness and Chronic Anxiety Treated Simultaneously With Osteopathic Cranial Manipulative Medicine.

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness is a chronic functional vestibular disorder characterized by persistent dizziness, imbalance, motion sensitivity, and significant psychological distress, frequently including anxiety. Symptoms often persist despite normal imaging and multidisciplinary evaluation, contributing to diagnostic uncertainty and misattribution to psychiatric causes. Osteopathic cranial manipulative medicine is not routinely incorporated into the management of persistent postural-perceptual dizziness despite osteopathic principles, emphasizing the interrelationship between cran

Latent profile analysis of depression and anxiety comorbidity in patients with acute ischemic stroke: a prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and disability globally, with post-stroke depression and post-stroke anxiety being common and significant complications that hinder recovery and adversely affect quality of life. Although these conditions frequently co-occur, their heterogeneity remains poorly understood. This study integrates the Health Ecology Model (HEM) and employs Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) to identify distinct psychological profiles of depression and anxiety among patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS), as well as to investigate their multilevel determinants. Female Sexual Dysfunction Across the Female Lifespan: The Impact of Menopause, Pelvic Floor Disorders, and Pelvic Surgery.

Female sexual dysfunction is a multifactorial condition influenced by biological, psychological, relational, and sociocultural factors that can compromise sexual well-being. It is a prevalent condition, affecting nearly 40% of the global female population. Furthermore, problems related to desire, arousal and orgasm have an impact on 12% of women across the lifespan. Despite the high prevalence of this issue and its harmful impact on mental health and vitality, a considerable number of women do not seek medical care. Another issue is the lack of physicians specialising in sexual health problems

Ethical and Clinical Boundaries in Genomics & Newborn Screening: A Brief Report from IPIC2025.

The Ethics Session of the International Primary Immunodeficiency Congress (IPIC), held in November 2025 and organised by the International Patient Organisation for Primary Immunodeficiencies (IPOPI), examined one of the most challenging developments emerging from genomic-enhanced newborn screening: the identification of serious, non-treatable disorders as incidental detection in programmes originally designed to detect severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). Using a fictionalised clinical scenario based on the recent literature, the session explored the early diagnosis of ataxia-telangiectasi

Importance of Laboratory Detection of Macro-Aspartate Aminotransferase.

BACKGROUND: The macroenzyme form of aspartate aminotransferase (macro-AST) is formed by the binding of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) with immunoglobulins. Macro-AST excretion from serum is prolonged because of its high molecular weight, leading to increased AST activities. Because of the difficulty in detecting macro-AST through routine laboratory tests, affected patients often undergo repeated examinations, with associated anxiety. METHODS: The macro-AST was precipitated by polyethylene glycol precipitation to eliminate the interference of macro-aspartate aminotransferase in the detection

Chronic pain in haemophilia: assessment and analgesic treatment.

People with haemophilia tend to experience pain from an early age because of venipuncture and hemarthrosis. If pain is not properly managed, it can become chronic and bedevil patients throughout their lives. Therapies are currently available that have been shown to effectively treat the different types of pain and their causes. Patients with haemophilia tend to experience either nociceptive or mixed pain. Identification of the cause of pain by means of imaging techniques, and understanding the characteristics, location and intensity of the pain, are essential for a more targeted therapeutic ap

Developing an understanding of skin picking in people with Prader-Willi syndrome: A structured literature review and re-analysis of existing data.

A search of the PubMed and Web of Science databases for articles on skin picking in PWS was undertaken identifying case studies; trials of specific treatments; and descriptions of when skin picking occurs, what sites are chosen, and what initiates and sustains this behaviour. Published papers have also considered how skin picking might link to the PWS genotype and whether it is best considered to be part of the repetitive and ritualistic behaviours characteristic of the syndrome. To answer specific questions raised as a result of the review additional analysis was undertaken using data from ou

Home injuries to children.

To describe the circumstances around childhood injuries in the home, information on home injuries to children was collected in the emergency room of a pediatric trauma centre as part of an injury surveillance program. During a one-year period, data on 1,538 patients (age < or = 18 years) injured at home were recorded. An inverse s-shape association of home injuries with age was observed. Falls were the leading cause (51%); other children were struck by objects (18%) or sustained cutting/piercing injuries (9%). Age was positively associated with the likelihood of being struck by objects, cuttin

Intractable facial pain and illness behaviour.

Management of intractable facial pain (IFP) patients is time consuming and potentially frustrating. Earlier identification of IFP patients may be helped by considering such cases in terms of their illness behaviour rather than a large rang of other diagnostic labels. A group of 24 IFP patients, with diagnoses including temporomandibular joint dysfunction pain, atypical facial pain and facial neuralgia, completed a questionnaire designed to measure illness behaviour. Compared to a control group of patients with minor odontogenic pain, IFP patients were more somatically preoccupied, could not ac

SCIENCE, MYSTICISM AND PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY.

Historically, psychopharmaceutical agents have been used to produce a mystical state with the religious connotation of "a union with Divine Nature" or of "oneness with God." Such transcendental states are also known to occur in starvation, self-flagellation, Yoga and various psychoses.A common psychological origin is suggested for these states, in which there is a psychic regression to an early phase of development. This genetically is the phase wherein the infant is still united with the mother and has not yet established the boundaries between the "self" and the "not-self." In a subtler form
