Development and Launch of a Dutch Mobile App (MediMama) on Over-the-Counter Medication Safety During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Development and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Over-the-counter (OTC) medicines are frequently used during pregnancy. As these medicines are often used without medical supervision, accessible and reliable safety information is essential. However, finding reliable and understandable information on the safety of these medicines during pregnancy is often experienced as difficult. Hence, there is a need for a new easily accessible electronic health (eHealth) tool that empowers women to actively seek information to support safer self-medication practices during pregnancy and breastfeeding. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe th

Machine learning-driven identification of virulence determinants in Borrelia burgdorferi associated with human dissemination.

Lyme disease, the most common tick-borne infectious disease in the United States, presents with highly variable clinical outcomes, ranging from localized erythema migrans to severe disseminated complications affecting the heart, joints, and nervous system. The bacterial determinants underlying this phenotypic variation remain largely unknown, limiting our ability to predict disease progression and optimize treatment strategies. Here, we applied machine learning (ML) approaches to identify specific amino acid residues within surface-exposed virulence factors that predict human dissemination phe

Empowering patient choice: a systematic review of decision aids for benign prostatic hyperplasia.

BACKGROUND: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a complex condition that affects ~3.2 million men in the UK. As men often face multiple treatment options, discussion and consideration of their priorities and preferences is necessary; however, research indicates this is not always adopted in practice. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate decisional interventions currently available for men with symptomatic BPH, distinct from those designed for prostate cancer. METHODS: Eight databases (PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, Science Direct, Scopus, Google, Cochrane Library, Centre for Reviews and Dissemination)

PolyQ Database-an integrated database on polyglutamine diseases.

Polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases are neurodegenerative disorders caused by abnormally expanded Cytosine, Adenine, Guanine (CAG) triplet repeat sequences in the coding region of otherwise unrelated genes. Until now, nine different polyQ diseases have been described: Huntington's disease, dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy, spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy and six types of spinocerebellar ataxias-1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 17. The pathogenic expansion translates into an aberrant tract of glutamines in the encoded proteins, compromising several cellular functions and biological processes. There is curre

Intervention cost-effectiveness for pediatric anxiety and OCD: A systematic review and integrated database model.

BACKGROUND: While multiple treatments for pediatric anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) are efficacious, little is known about their cost-effectiveness. In response, we sought to provide relevant information through systematic review and cost-effectiveness simulation. METHODS: We evaluated the cost-effectiveness of treatment for pediatric anxiety and OCD in two ways. First, we conducted a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines. Second, we evaluated cost-effectiveness for antidepressant medication, cognitive behavioral therapy, and their combination via a simulation that int

Unveiling Coronasomnia: Pandemic Stress and Sleep Problems During the COVID-19 Outbreak.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed an unprecedented challenge to public well-being, necessitating an examination of its health impact. This review discusses the relationship between pandemic-induced stressors and individual sleep patterns and quality. The pandemic stressors include lockdown or physical distancing measures, direct virus exposure, and the dissemination of misinformation and disinformation. The pandemic led to delayed sleep-wake cycles, except for healthcare professionals, and worsened sleep quality. The prevalence of insomnia was higher for women due to pre-existing conditions and susc

BACKGROUND: Hospital records lack information about country of birth. This study describes a method for calculating hospitalization rates by the percentage of foreign-born in Census Dissemination Areas (DAs). DATA AND METHODS: Data from the 2006 Census were used to classify DAs by the percentage of the foreign-born population who lived in them. Quintile and tercile thresholds were created to classify DAs as having low to high percentages of foreign-born residents. This information was appended to the 2005/2006 Hospital Morbidity Database via postal codes. Age-sex standardized hospitalization

Reducing the incidence of tap-water scalds: strategies for physicians.

Burns are a significant cause of severe injury and death. Scalds, including those from hot tap water, are one of the most common causes of burns, especially in vulnerable populations (children, elderly people and people with physical and cognitive disabilities). Although people generally recognize the danger associated with hot tap water, many are unaware of the short exposure periods that can result in serious burns. Tap-water scalds are preventable. Both active and passive prevention measures are beneficial in reducing this serious health hazard. Physicians are in a unique position to dissem

Domiciliary colonization by Panstrongylus geniculatus associated with human blood meal in Salto do Itararé, Paraná State, Brazil.

Despite the control of Triatoma infestans in Brazil, other vectors remain implicated in the transmission of Chagas disease, making the maintenance of municipal entomological surveillance and health education actions indispensable. This study reports on the colonization of a home by triatomine bugs in a mattress, evidenced when a resident of Salto do Itararé, Paraná, delivered a nymph to the State Health Department in 2025 while she was lying in bed. The insect, identified as Panstrongylus geniculatus, although not infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, had ingested human blood, a particularly worryi

Dual Role of Extracellular Vesicles as Orchestrators of Emerging and Reemerging Virus Infections.

Current decade witnessed the emergence and re-emergence of many viruses, which affected public health significantly. Viruses mainly utilize host cell machinery to promote its growth, and spread of these diseases. Numerous factors influence virus-host cell interactions, of which extracellular vesicles play an important role, where they transfer information both locally and distally by enclosing viral and host-derived proteins and RNAs as their cargo. Thus, they play a dual role in mediating virus infections by promoting virus dissemination and evoking immune responses in host organisms. Moreove

Postconcussion Exertion Evolution: Clinical and Behavioral Considerations.

The philosophy and practices concerning concussion management have evolved from passive to active strategies that incorporate immediate, guided rest followed by early integration of physical and cognitive activity as tolerated by symptoms. Recent research and clinical evidence support guidance that symptom tolerable and clinically guided activity is beneficial postconcussion both acutely and in the longer term. Furthermore, recent studies illustrate benefits of targeted deficit-based therapies (vestibular, cervicogenic, visual, psychological, etc.) postconcussion subacutely and in those with p

Plasmid-Mediated Antibiotic Resistance and Virulence in Gram-negatives: the Klebsiella pneumoniae Paradigm.

Plasmids harbor genes coding for specific functions including virulence factors and antibiotic resistance that permit bacteria to survive the hostile environment found in the host and resist treatment. Together with other genetic elements such as integrons and transposons, and using a variety of mechanisms, plasmids participate in the dissemination of these traits, resulting in the virtual elimination of barriers among different kinds of bacteria. In this article we review the current information about the physiology of plasmids and their role in virulence and antibiotic resistance from the Gr
