A multi-layered barrier to oral health: a mixed methods exploration of dental anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Dental anxiety is a prevalent psychological barrier that prevents many individuals from seeking routine dental care. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and predictors of dental anxiety and to explore the experiences of adult patients in a public dental hospital, providing insight into dental anxiety and its impact on treatment behaviors and clinician interactions. METHODS: The study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-method design, beginning with a quantitative phase involving 415 participants assessed using the Dental Fear Scale, followed by a qualitative phase with 1

Who They Are and Why They Run: A Scoping Review to Understand Running Away in Child Welfare System.

Although the issue of children running away from child welfare system (CWS) occurs in various contexts and has detrimental consequences, to our knowledge, it has received limited attention in academic research and practical interventions. This scoping review examines risk factors and motivations for running away among children in the CWS, drawing on 33 studies published between 1991 and 2025. The findings reveal that key demographic risk factors associated with running away from CWS were identified as older age and urban residence. The effects of gender and race/ethnicity remain inconsistent a

Effectiveness of an app-based intervention to reduce substance use, gambling, and digital media use in vocational school students: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Substance-related and addictive disorders are among the most common mental disorders in adolescence and young adulthood. Vocational school students are a risk group for problematic substance use and addictive behavior. However, the availability of evidence-based prevention concepts and programs is underdeveloped in the vocational school setting. METHODS/DESIGN: A two-arm cluster randomized waitlist-controlled trial will be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of an app-based intervention to decrease substance use, gambling, and digital media use in vocational school students in

Assessment of urogenital schistosomiasis among basic school children in selected communities along major rivers in the central region of Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: urogenital schistosomiasis affects school-aged children with impacts on health, growth, and cognitive development. Basic schools along active water bodies have a possibility of a high infection among the children. METHODS: we performed a school-based cross-sectional assessment of urogenital schistosomiasis among children in four selected rural communities along major rivers in the central region of Ghana. Three hundred and nine (309) basic school children class 1 to junior high school (JHS) 3 were recruited. Sociodemographic data and information on behavioral influences were col

Endocannabinoid concentrations in hair and mental health of unaccompanied refugee minors.

Altered activity of the endocannabinoid (EC) system has been linked to dysregulated stress-reactivity and the development of trauma-related psychopathology. The EC system, with its main components anandamide (AEA), 2-arachidonoyl-glycerol (2-AG) and other N-acyl-ethanolamides, is considered to be a buffer system that protects against the negative effects of traumatic experiences on mental health. Recently, the use of hair analyses, a method to gain information on long-term cumulative system activity, has been introduced to the study of ECs. Here, we seek to extend current knowledge on the pote

Mental Health and Coping Strategies of Health Communicators Who Faced Online Abuse During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, health experts used social media platforms to share information and advocate for policies. Many of them faced online abuse, which some reported took a toll on their mental health and well-being. Variation in the impacts of online abuse on mental health, well-being, and professional efficacy suggest that health communicators may differ in their coping strategies and ultimately their resilience to such abuse. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore the impacts of online abuse on health communicators' mental health and well-being as well as their emotion- and pro

Breaking the vicious cycle of delayed healthcare seeking for people who use drugs.

BACKGROUND: People who use drugs (PWUD) are at increased mortality risk, yet they typically avoid healthcare settings due to stigma and shunning. Understanding the healthcare journey from the viewpoint of PWUD has been understudied, although it is essential for informing solutions to increase healthcare access to improve their healthcare outcomes. We aimed to understand the process of accessing healthcare for PWUD, including perceived barriers and facilitators, by exploring their experiences, attitudes, and beliefs. METHODS: We employed purposive sampling to recruit PWUD to participate in nin

Multiplatform characterization of online permanent female contraception discussion among social media users: analysis of Twitter and Reddit.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals choosing permanent female contraception (PFC) face barriers including age and parity. Prior literature has focused on regret, but rarely on understanding patient perspectives. Social media is increasingly used to obtain medical information; hence this study seeks to use popular platforms to evaluate motivations, barriers, and facilitators to obtaining PFC. METHODS: This study collected Twitter and Reddit posts from October 2020 to April 2023 and July 2017 to April 2023, respectively. Data was analyzed using Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT),

"What if I get sick, where shall I go?": a qualitative investigation of healthcare engagement among young gay and bisexual men in Nairobi, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Globally, young gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (YMSM) experience a disproportionate burden of disease compared to young heterosexual men and older MSM. However, YMSM experience major inequities in access and use of health services. We sought to gain a detailed understanding of YMSM's healthcare engagement experiences across public, private, tertiary institution-based and MSM-friendly health facilities in Nairobi, Kenya, to inform development of interventions to improve access and use of health services by YMSM. METHODS: In September 2021, in-person qualitative i

Pluralistic care pathways may compound care delays and health inequalities across urban, rural, and pastoralist Somaliland.

Health-seeking behavior, healthcare access, and health inequalities in Somaliland are shaped by medical pluralism: people may move among traditional or faith healers, pharmacies and drug sellers, private clinics, and hospitals during the same illness episode. These pluralistic care pathways may differ across urban, rural, and pastoralist communities, yet they are rarely measured as complete therapeutic itineraries. This Perspective develops a conceptual argument, grounded in published literature and policy documents, that the public health concern is not pluralism itself but poorly connected t

Addiction-Like Severity Predicts Prolonged Oxycodone Withdrawal-Induced Allodynia in Genetically Diverse Rats.

Opioid withdrawal is associated with heightened pain sensitivity, including allodynia. Although opioid-induced allodynia is well-documented in humans and animal models, the relationship between the severity of opioid withdrawal-induced allodynia and individual addiction-like behaviors remains poorly understood. To address this gap, Heterogeneous Stock rats underwent long access (12 hours/day) intravenous oxycodone self-administration, followed by measurement of mechanical sensitivity at six timepoints across three weeks of abstinence. Rats were stratified by an Addiction Index derived from ind

Threading the Needle: Practical Considerations for Merging Theory-Driven Computational Psychiatry With Data-Driven Analytics to Enhance Precision Health at Scale.

The rapidly evolving field of computational psychiatry enables quantification of specific cognitive processes and their underlying mechanisms in a translational and potentially scalable manner, using a combination of data collection via mechanistically informed behavioral tasks and theory-driven mathematical modeling. In parallel, transdiagnostic, dimensional approaches to psychiatric diagnostics, such as the Research Domain Criteria and Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology, seek to facilitate links between clinical research and real-world clinical reality, which rarely respects traditiona

Fearlessness about death and suicidal ideation: Religious identity matters.

INTRODUCTION: Religion is a salient aspect of patient background in treatment (The psychology of religion and coping: Theory, research, practice; Guilford Press). However, research investigating the role of religion in suicide is lacking and inconsistent (Journal of Religion and Health, 57, 2478-2499). The current study (1) clarifies the association between religious identity and fearlessness about death in a psychiatric sample and (2) tests whether religious identity moderates the association between fearlessness about death and suicidal ideation. METHODS: Participants were 155 patients seek

Prodromal Cognitive Changes as a Prognostic Indicator of Forthcoming Huntington's Disease Severity: A Retrospective Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive changes in Huntington's disease (HD) precede motor manifestations. ENROLL-HD platform includes four cognitive measures of information processing speed (IPS). Our group is eager to seek clinical markers in the life stage that is as close as possible to the age of onset (ie, the so called prodromal HD phase) because this is the best time for therapeutic interventions. OBJECTIVES: Our study aimed to test whether cognitive scores in prodromal ENROLL-HD mutation carriers show the potential to predict the severity of motor and behavioral changes once HD became fully manifested

Socio-demographic, anthropometric, and psychosocial predictors of attrition across behavioral weight-loss trials.

Preventing attrition is a major concern in behavioral weight loss intervention studies. The purpose of this analysis was to identify baseline and six-month predictors associated with participant attrition across three independent clinical trials of behavioral weight loss interventions (PREFER, SELF, and SMART) that were conducted over 10 years. Baseline measures included body mass index, Barriers to Healthy Eating, Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI), Hunger Satiety Scale (HSS), Binge Eating Scale (BES), Medical Outcome Study Short Form (MOS SF-36 v2) and Weight Efficacy Lifestyle Questionnaire

Health differences among Lumbee Indians using public and private sources of care.

CONTEXT: Of 2.4 million American Indians, approximately 60% are eligible to receive Indian Health Service (IHS) benefits, leaving many to seek care elsewhere. It is unknown if their quality of care, health behaviors, and health status vary by source of care, as demonstrated for other populations. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether preventive services, health behaviors, and number of health conditions vary as a function of having non-IHS public versus private physicians as sources of usual care. METHODS: 1,177 Lumbee Indians, who are ineligible to receive IHS services
