Does a screening questionnaire for familial and hereditary colorectal cancer risk work in a health insurance population?

The aim of our study was to evaluate actual prevalence, uptake and first experiences with a questionnaire developed for early detection of colorectal cancer (CRC) in persons with familial/hereditary risk. A cross sectional study in an insurance population aged 30-54 years was conducted. Subjects with ICD-10 codes C00 to C97 and D37 to D48 were excluded. A standardised questionnaire was sent to 12,139 subjects. Three months later, subjects with a reported family history were followed by a second questionnaire. An additional telephone survey was performed to validate responses. Nineteen per cent…

[Assessment of unconventional medical therapies by the Medical Review Board of the Statutory Health Insurance Funds (MDK)].

The Medical Review Board of the Statutory Health Insurance Funds (MDK) provides assessments of medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures comprising the assessment of both individual cases and systematic assessments of health technologies (HTA). Here the foundation of these assessments will be outlined and demonstrated that assessment work is based on the principles of evidence-based medicine. There are no clear-cut criteria distinguishing between so-called complementary and other medical procedures. It is argued that there should be no difference in the assessment standards and criteria to…

Area-Level Disparities in Pneumococcal Vaccination Among Publicly Insured US Adults: 2016-2019.

OBJECTIVES: Understanding pneumococcal vaccine uptake across county-level social vulnerability is important for identifying geographic disparities and informing strategies to increase vaccine uptake and reduce the incidence of pneumococcal disease (PD). Using a retrospective cohort design, we characterized differences in vaccine uptake among publicly insured US adults, comparing vaccination rates among beneficiaries in counties with high versus low social vulnerability. METHODS: We assessed uptake and disease risk using claims for Medicare (aged ≥65 y; 2016-2019) and Medicaid (low income or d

Examination of insurance type and cancer treatments with administrative burdens and financial toxicity in a sample of cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Many cancer survivors experience administrative burdens and poor financial outcomes but associations with insurance and cancer treatments are not well studied. This study aimed to fill that gap. METHODS: Cancer survivors (n = 459), on average 11 years post-diagnosis and in the United States completed a cross-sectional survey. Dependent variables were five types of insurance-related administrative burdens (prior authorization, denials, surprise bills, stepped care, out-of-network care) and four dimensions of financial toxicity. Independent variables were health insurance type at diagn…

Evaluating the Impact of Insurer-Sponsored Health Coaching on Hospitalization and Costs in India: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Health coaching programs are emerging as a promising intervention to improve disease management and reduce healthcare costs, particularly in the context of insurer-sponsored wellness initiatives. While such programs have shown positive outcomes in Western healthcare settings, their effectiveness in India remains underexplored. This study examines the impact of a health coaching program implemented by a prominent Indian health insurer (Aditya Birla Health Insurance), focusing on hospitalization rates and claims paid among high-risk policyholders. To assess the intervention's effectiveness, a re…

Indobufen versus aspirin for platelet inhibition: efficacy and safety insights from the INSURE and OPTION trials.

This study systematically compares the antiplatelet efficacy and safety of indobufen and aspirin based on two key clinical trials, INSURE and OPTION. The INSURE trial showed that in patients with acute moderate-to-severe ischemic stroke, indobufen was significantly less effective than aspirin in preventing stroke recurrence and did not exhibit superior bleeding safety. In contrast, the OPTION trial indicated that in post-percutaneous coronary intervention patients, indobufen combined with clopidogrel was non-inferior to aspirin combined with clopidogrel in preventing ischemic events and yielde

Buprenorphine dosing patterns and treatment outcomes for patients with opioid use disorder insured by Medicaid in Philadelphia.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid use disorder (OUD) remains a significant public health challenge, exacerbated by the rise of potent, synthetic opioids like fentanyl in the illicit drug supply. Buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist, is an evidence-based treatment for OUD. While evidence suggests that higher buprenorphine doses (>16 mg/day) improve treatment retention and reduce overdose, many providers hesitate to prescribe these doses. METHODS: This study analyzed buprenorphine dosing patterns and treatment outcomes among Medicaid-insured individuals with OUD in Philadelphia from 2017 to 2023. Data we
