Further insight into adolescent personal identity statuses: Differences based on self-esteem, family climate, and family communication.

INTRODUCTION: During adolescence, youngsters are faced with the challenging task of forming an identity. This process can be either supported or hindered by adolescents' family context. The present study used a six-process model of personal identity including the five identity processes described by the dual-cycle model of identity (exploration in breadth, commitment making, exploration in depth, identification with commitment, and ruminative exploration) as well as a sixth identity process of reconsideration of commitment, commonly described in the three-factor model of identity. Risking It Anyway: An Adolescent Case Study of Trauma, Sexual and Gender Identities, and Relationality.

This article presents the case of a Chinese-American adolescent with a significant trauma history who was questioning her sexual and gender identities. The implications of the client's intersecting identities for case conceptualization and treatment are considered within the framework of affirmative practices for sexual and gender minority (SGM) clients. The impacts of stress and trauma on this client's experiences-and SGM clients more broadly-are also considered, particularly with respect to how this client understood and negotiated her experiences of relational trauma. This case is intended

Impact of Repeated Questioning on Interviewers: Learning From a Forensic Interview Training Project.

Forensic interviewers have a difficult job with high risk for career burnout and secondary trauma. Few studies have addressed how new forensic interviewers or trainees experience repeated questioning and multiple interviews. This study simulated the process of training new forensic interviewers through the creation of two interview videos in which social work graduate students participated as actors portraying the roles of interviewer and child. These films served as instructional aids preparing graduate social work students for professional child welfare roles while promoting research-based a

The interpersonal context of client motivational language in cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Previous research has found that client motivational language (especially arguments against change or counterchange talk; CCT) in early therapy sessions is a reliable predictor of therapy process and outcomes across a broad range of treatments including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Existing studies have considered the general occurrence of CCT, but the present study differentiated 2 types of CCT in early CBT sessions for 37 clients with generalized anxiety disorder: (a) statements that are uttered to express ambivalence regarding change versus (b) statements that are intended to oppose

Children's Everyday Lives Shadowed by Stalking: Post separation Stalking Narratives of Finnish Children and Women.

This qualitative study discusses post separation stalking and its implications in children's everyday lives. Based on narratives of 13 Finnish children and 20 women, the research fills a gap in the knowledge regarding the psychosocial, emotional, and physical impacts of stalking on children when their mothers are stalked by a former partner. It identifies four forms of impact: (a) an atmosphere of fear and feelings of insecurity; (b) disguised acts of stalking and the father's performance of care, love, and longing; (c) exploitation of children in stalking; and (d) physical abuse, acts of viol

Rewriting the history of Chinese families in nineteenth-century Australia.

The nineteenth-century Chinese population in Australia was made up mostly of men, drawing many commentators to the conclusion these men faced an absence of family life, resulting in prostitution, gambling, opium use and other so-called vices. Recent research has, however, expanded and complicated our knowledge of Chinese families in New South Wales and Victoria, particularly concerning the extent to which Chinese men and white Australian women formed intimate relationships. This article traces the origins of the misconceptions about Chinese families in nineteenth-century Australia, and conside

Longitudinal transmission of conflict resolution styles from marital relationships to adolescent-parent relationships.

This study longitudinally investigated transmission: Can the way adolescents resolve conflicts with their parents be explained by the way parents resolve conflicts with each other? Questionnaires about conflict resolution styles were completed by 282 young adolescents (mean age = 13.2) and their parents. Path analyses with cross-lagged effects indicated that transmission of conflict resolution styles from marital relationships to adolescent-parent relationships occurs: Conflict engagement and positive problem solving in marital relationships were significantly related to, respectively, conflic

Patients presenting with fresh trauma after interpersonal violence. Part I. Alcohol and substance abuse.

BACKGROUND: Patients presenting with fresh trauma frequently have evidence of substance abuse. Nevertheless, few South African studies have measured the levels of both alcohol and other substances in patients presenting with fresh trauma after interpersonal violence. METHODS: A representative sample of patients presenting with fresh trauma to the Trauma Unit of Tygerberg Hospital was selected for study. Subjects were questioned about the nature of the trauma and breath alcohol concentrations were determined. Blood and urine samples for analysis of alcohol and other substances were obtained fr

Guidelines for the family therapeutic approach to eating disorders.

After a brief historical overview of the literature on family therapy in eating disorders, the authors' own clinical experience is summarized in some practical guidelines: give the family therapist a central position within the team, engage the family and/or spouse as co-therapist, explore the message of the eating disorder on different levels, neutralize the symptoms outside of the family interaction, promote direct communication, facilitate the separation-individuation process, and be available for a long time. Finally some special issues are discussed: sexual and/or physical abuse in the fa

Children's return to school after treatment for solid tumours.

Great advances have been made in recent years in the treatment of children's cancers. Consequently, increasing numbers are now returning to school. The pilot study described in this paper looks at the problems experienced by some of these children, their teachers and parents, and some of the solutions which have been found, with a view to eventually taking some action to help the situation. The results are based on detailed studies of 16 children who had all been off treatment for two or more years and had therefore returned to school on a normal full-time basis. Parents and teachers were inte

Stranger reaction and elective mutism in young children.

Within a two-year period, 15 electively mute children were seen in a single Head Start program. Most were not only silent, but also compliant, reticent, and almost "frozen" around strangers. A small subgroup, in contrast, displayed oppositional behavior. This paper reviews the literature on "elective mutism" and advocates a developmental and familial analysis of the presenting symptoms.

Self-help groups.

Many people in developed countries see medicine as threatening health, not only by malpractice, clinical iatrogenesis, and inappropriate treatment, but also by diverting attention from social and environmental causes of ill-health. There is growing hostility towards health care that undermines the power of individuals to care for themselves or shape their own environments, and a corresponding rapid and substantial growth of self-help groups.

The social construction of illness experience: families with a chronically-ill child.

This paper examines how parents constructed the illness of a child with chronic sickness. The focus is on eliciting the parents' explanatory model of illness, that is, how they understood and described their child's illness, and how they managed their interactions with the child. The data were collected by using an ethnographic approach. In addition to obtaining parents' accounts, naturally occurring interactions between parents and children were observed and tape recorded. The paper discusses the parents' semantic definition of the "child as normal'. In actual practice, however, the child's l

[Risk factors for heavy cigarette smoking in young men: a longitudinal study].

In a three-year follow-up on 841 males questioned at the age of 19 and 22 years, an attempt has been made to determine the characteristics of social situation and personality which are correlated with constant heavy cigarette consumption, and what other risk factors are also involved. Bivariate analyses, multiple regression, and path analysis revealed the following influencing factors: personality traits such as nervousness and extraversion, low social integration, low assessment of the subject's own health situation, loose ties with parents, lower school level, increased alcohol and cannabis

Bridging the ICD11 and the DSM-5 personality disorders classification systems: The role of the PID5BF + M.

INTRODUCTION: In both the ICD-11 Classification of Personality Disorders and the DSM-5 Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) personality disorders (PD) are characterized by impairments in self- and interpersonal functioning which distinguish the various levels of dysfunction. Moreover, pathological traits are used by these classification systems to define the stylistic expression of personality dysfunction. Negative affectivity, detachment, antagonism/dissociality, and disinhibition feature as trait domains in each of these models. However, there are also differences between the tw
