Weak-acid anions such as borate and cyanide, present problems in chemically suppressed ion chromatography, since the acids are weakly ionised, giving low conductivity and therefore decreased sensitivity. For borate this problem was overcome by converting the weak acid to its sodium salt, by the use of a second anion micromembrane suppressor (AMMS) as an ion exchange reactor (IER), flushed by EDTA reagent, to supply sodium ions for the conversion. We describe a simple method for measuring sodium azide concentrations in aliquots of blood and other tissues. Aliquots are acidified, converting azide to volatile hydrazoic acid (HN3) which is then trapped in sodium hydroxide. We analyze the resulting aliquots by ion chromatography, using a sodium tetraborate eluent and suppressed conductivity detection. The method is sensitive to at least 100 ng/mL.

The K+ transport in isolated erythrocytes from the frog Rana ridibunda has been studied using 86Rb as a tracer at the temperature of 18-20 degrees C. At physiological K+ concentration (3 mM) in C1- medium ouabain and furosemide inhibited K+ influx by approximately 42 and 47%, respectively. Furosemide had no effect on the Na+ (22Na) transport under the same conditions. The replacement of C1- by NO-3 in medium resulted in significant decrease of total K+ influx, which was not inhibited by furosemide. Ion-selective poly(vinyl chloride) membrane electrodes for the opium alkaloids papaverine and ethaverine are presented. The electrode membranes contain ion pairs of the alkaloids with the anionic counter ion tetraphenylborate. The detection limits for all electrodes were approximately 2 x 10(-6) mol dm-3 at pH 5.0 in 100 mmol dm-3 buffered solutions and the measured slopes were close to the values theoretically expected. A new method, the cation exchange HPLC of haemoglobins, has been compared to the classical carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) chromatography of globin chains for the prenatal diagnosis of beta thalassaemia and sickle cell disease. The two methods correlated highly. The HPLC procedure can use two independent and reliable means--optical density at 405 nm and radioactivity to determine the adult Hb/HbF+Fac ratio. The diagnosis is obtained in 15 min by cation exchange HPLC.

A series of articles concerned with determination of pH in the tumour and with studies of pH changes under induced hyperglycemia are reviewed.
