Spa therapy (balneotherapy) relieves mental stress, sleep disorder, and general health problems in sub-healthy people.

To investigate the relieving effects of hot spring balneotherapy on mental stress, sleep disorder, general health problems, and women's health problems in sub-healthy people, we recruited 500 volunteers in sub-health in Chongqing, and 362 volunteers completed the project, including 223 in the intervention group and 139 in the control group. The intervention group underwent hot spring balneotherapy for 5 months, while the control group did not. The two groups took questionnaire investigation (general data, mental stress, emotional status, sleep quality, general health problems, as well as some

Oppositional behavior and longitudinal predictions of early adulthood mental health problems in chronic tic disorders.

Chronic tic disorders (TD) are associated with a number of psychological problems such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive behavior (OCB), oppositional-defiant disorder (ODD) as well as anxious and depressive symptoms. ODD is often considered a risk factor for many psychological symptoms and recent work suggests that different ODD dimensions show independent predictions of later psychological problems. This study examined the longitudinal predictions between ODD dimensions of Irritability and Defiance and the most frequent comorbidities in TD from childhood

Examining the short term effects of emotion under an Adaptation Level Theory model of tinnitus perception.

OBJECTIVES: Existing evidence suggests a strong relationship between tinnitus and emotion. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of short-term emotional changes along valence and arousal dimensions on tinnitus outcomes. Emotional stimuli were presented in two different modalities: auditory and visual. The authors hypothesized that (1) negative valence (unpleasant) stimuli and/or high arousal stimuli will lead to greater tinnitus loudness and annoyance than positive valence and/or low arousal stimuli, and (2) auditory emotional stimuli, which are in the same modality as the tin

The factors affecting neonatal presentations to the pediatric emergency department.

BACKGROUND: A pediatric emergency department (PED) may be utilized by neonates for nonurgent complaints. Various factors, such as primiparity, maternal age, early postnatal discharge, race, income, and maternal and paternal educational levels, have been reported to affect the acuity of neonatal emergency department utilization. OBJECTIVE: To determine the characteristics of PED visits by neonates (infants ≤ 28 days of age) and to evaluate the factors affecting the acuity of these visits. METHODS: We prospectively collected the data of neonates who were admitted to the PED of a tertiary unive

Risperidone-to-methylphenidate switch reaction in children: three cases.

As atypical antipsychotics are increasingly used in the treatment of childhood behavioural disorders either as monotherapy or in combination with other medications, there is a need to know more about their safety, in particular during switching to and from methylphenidate treatment, as antipsychotics and methylphenidate have opposing effects on dopaminergic neurotransmission. This report is about three cases of children who developed severe adverse reactions during switching from risperidone to methylphenidate. The first patient was a 6-year-old boy, diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactiv

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Patients With Pathologically Confirmed Comorbid Alzheimer Disease and Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the clinical presentation in patients with comorbid Alzheimer disease neuropathologic change (ADNC) and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) neuropathology, despite frequent comorbidity of neurodegenerative diseases on autopsy. In other neurodegenerative conditions, multiple pathologies alter the presentation of neuropsychiatric symptoms, complicating clinical care. We examined whether neuropsychiatric symptoms differ in patients with comorbid ADNC/FTLD compared with patients with each pathology alone. METHODS: This was a retrospective exam

[Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder or bipolar disorder in childhood?].

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is considered one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood, characterized by inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity. Even though a strict definition of this entity is constantly sought, ADHD is an often redefined and reconceptualized syndrome. Epidemiological studies show large differences in the incidence, pointing out that the effort of actual taxonomic systems to offer objective diagnostic criteria have not yielded substantial results. Bipolar Disorder (BD) with onset in childhood is distinguished from the adult form

Simulating symptom-specific interventions linking depression and anxiety among civil aviation college students: a network analysis differentiated by perceived parental relationships.

Depression and anxiety frequently co-occur among civil aviation college students, and parental relationships have been shown to play an important role in the development of this comorbidity. However, the symptom-level mechanisms underlying depression–anxiety comorbidity remain unclear among them. Examining this comorbidity from a network perspective, while accounting for perceived parental relationships, may help predict key bridge symptoms and simulate interventions for these bridge symptoms. A total of 1,033 participants completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Di

From pathology to precision therapy: Contemporary and emerging strategies in Alzheimer's disease treatment.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterised by dementia, confusion, irritability, a lack of cognition, and mood swings. Since its discovery in 1906, many small molecules have been designed to block disease progression by targeting the primary targets β-amyloid and tau proteins. Subsequent research focused on small-molecule inhibitors targeting secondary targets, such as β-secretases and γ-secretases. However, the clinically approved conventional therapies include acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and N-methyl-D-aspartate inhibitors that relieve only disease

"Is a general belief in one's capabilities related to mental and physical health?": The relationships between self-efficacy, health outcomes, and health-related behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Self-efficacy, reflecting an individual’s belief in their ability to achieve goals, influences motivation, behaviour, and success. Understanding the interrelationships between general self-efficacy (GSE) and chronic conditions can contribute to developing prevention and treatment strategies. METHODS: We surveyed 3,532 participants (age = 31.73 ± 13.13 years, 66% females) using an online questionnaire that assessed GSE, chronic conditions, health complaints, and health-related behaviours. Binary logistic regression analysed associations. RESULTS: Higher GSE levels were associated wi

Symptom factors and their clinical correlates among adults with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Despite cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance (CFTR) modulator therapy that may dramatically alter the course of disease, many people living with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) experience co-occurring symptoms that may be interrelated and may synergistically degrade quality of life. We sought to identify symptom factors, or groups of correlated symptoms, connected by underlying latent variable(s). We then examined demographic and clinical characteristics associated with these groups among PwCF. METHODS: Using baseline data from a trial of specialist palliative care in PwCF, we assesse

Cytisinicline vs. Varenicline in Tobacco Addiction: A Literature Review Focused on Emotional Regulation, Psychological Symptoms, and Mental Health.

Tobacco use disorder remains a leading cause of preventable mortality, with nicotine playing a central role in the development and maintenance of dependence, mainly through its action on α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). Smoking cessation treatments must address both physiological withdrawal and the affective disturbances (such as anxiety, irritability, and mood lability) which often facilitate relapses. This review compares two pharmacotherapies used in smoking cessation, varenicline and cytisinicline (cytisine), with particular focus on their impact on emotional regulation, ps

Postpartum Psychosis and Bipolar Disorder: Review of Neurobiology and Expert Consensus Statement on Classification.

Postpartum psychosis (PP) is an acute and severe psychiatric illness with onset within weeks after delivery and a high risk of suicide and infanticide. Most women with PP experience severe mood symptoms, including mania, mixed episodes, or depression with psychotic features. Impaired cognition, irritability, and agitation are also common. The specific timing of PP strongly suggests a biological basis, because the postpartum time period is characterized by profound endocrine, immune, neuroanatomical, and physiological changes in the brain. Genetic studies show a unique risk architecture, partly

Aspartame-induced cognitive dysfunction: Unveiling role of microglia-mediated neuroinflammation and molecular remediation.

Aspartame, an artificial sweetener, is consumed by millions of people globally. There are multiple reports of aspartame and its metabolites affecting cognitive functions in animal models and humans, which include learning problems, headaches, seizures, migraines, irritable moods, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. These cognitive deficits and associated symptoms are partly attributed to dysregulated excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitter balance due to aspartate released from aspartame, resulting in an excitotoxic effect in neurons, leading to neuronal damage. However, microglia, a central…
