OBJECTIVE: To describe general practitioners' approach to and management of urethritis in men, and to compare this with a general practice protocol for urethritis.
DESIGN: Descriptive.
SETTING: General practices in Amsterdam.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 13 general practices in Amsterdam (23,510 patients, of whom 11,627 men) all episodes of urethritis in men (n = 55) were recorded during one year (complaints, medical management, diagnosis, medication, follow-up).
OUTCOME MEASURES: Description of the diagnostic and therapeutic approach and the course of episodes; rough comparison with the ureth

A laboratory technician developed leptospirosis following accidental inoculation, despite prompt administration of parenteral penicillin by an accepted regimen of post-exposure prophylaxis. Another technician was similarly exposed and was given doxycycline; no illness or serological conversion followed. The implications of these cases are discussed and recommendations made for post-exposure chemoprophylaxis with doxycycline.

The development of needs and the conditions for performing examinations in clinical bacteriology leads us to consider that bacteriological analysis should eventually: be closer to clinical requirements. This results in an accelerated bacteriology (whose response-times approach those of other biological specialties) and in a consideration of the diagnostic and therapeutic importance of the response; be less costly. This leads to an increase in productivity, and involves an introduction of computers, automatic systems for antibiograms and identification, and appropriate and inexpensive bioreagen

Current laboratory methods for the diagnosis of lymphocytic choriomeningitis are discussed, mainly from the point of view of recent improvements. The use of sentinel guinea-pigs is suggested for the detection of lymphocytic choriomeningitis infection in animal colonies.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the most common cause of neonatal sepsis. Screening for vaginal-rectal colonization of the mother is important to prevent exposure. The current standard diagnostic method for GBS is to collect a vaginal-rectal swab and inoculate in LIM broth to increase sensitivity. Use of flocked swabs such as Eswabs has become the recommended collection device due to their increased recovery rates and potential for automation. Despite being the recommended collection device, there is a lack of adequate literature providing guidance on processing of Eswabs for GBS cultures. This

Zika virus (ZIKV), an Aedes mosquito-borne flavivirus, has captured public health attention worldwide. Initially, the virus was reported in Africa and Asia. However, the outbreak of ZIKV in Brazil and the United States of America demonstrated the global health risk. Symptoms of ZIKV infection vary from mild fever, rash, and joint pain to an apparent increase in microcephaly in infants and severe manifestations including Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults. Such consequences led to enormous health challenges, and consequently the World Health Organization declared a global health emergency. This

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) of bacterial pathogens is an emerging public health threat. This threat extends to pets as it also compromises our ability to treat their infections. Surveillance programs in the United States have traditionally focused on collecting data from food animals, foods, and people. The Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN), a national network of 45 veterinary diagnostic laboratories, tested the antimicrobial susceptibility of clinically relevant bacterial isolates from animals, with companion animal species represented for the

BACKGROUND: The most common intestinal nematodes of dogs are Toxocara canis, hookworm and Trichuris vulpis. The present study was aimed to validate a new copromicroscopic technique, the Mini-FLOTAC and to compare its diagnostic efficiency and sensitivity with four other copromicroscopic techniques: direct smear, tube flotation, Wisconsin method and the FLOTAC dual technique.
FINDINGS: Two experiments were performed. In the first, faecal positive samples collected from 59 stray asymptomatic dogs, of which 21 were naturally infected with ancylostomidae, 13 naturally infected with T. canis and 2

In 2012, Sierra Leone experienced its worst cholera outbreak in over 15 years affecting 12 of the country's 13 districts. With limited diagnostic capability, particularly in bacterial culture, the cholera outbreak was initially confirmed by microbiological testing of clinical specimens outside of Sierra Leone. During 2012 - 2013, in direct response to the lack of diagnostic microbiology facilities, and to assist in investigating and monitoring the cholera outbreak, diagnostic and reference services were established in Sierra Leone at the Central Public Health Reference Laboratory focusing spec

Time to detection (TTD) in automated blood culture systems is delayed for sensitive microorganisms in the presence of antimicrobial substances and has been associated with worse outcomes for sepsis patients on inadequate empirical therapy. While resin addition removes antimicrobial substances to various degrees from blood culture media, media formulations and the blend of resins may influence performance. The BacT/Alert 3D system (bioMérieux) was investigated using the new resin-containing medium types FA Plus (aerobic) and FN Plus (anaerobic). TTD was compared between control and test bottles

Mycobacterium liflandii has been responsible for an emerging infection reported in the international trade of Western clawed frogs (Silurana tropicalis). This study shows that this mycolactone-producing Mycobacterium (MPM) has expanded its distribution range to France. The results of this study suggest that the use of in vitro fertilization to maintain genetic lines could be a temporary solution for valuable S. tropicalis propagation.
