Individual blood vessels in the chick choriallantoic membrane were selectively coagulated through photothermolysis, using pulsed laser irradiation at 585 nm. Pulse durations were chosen to be 0.45 ms and 10 ms, which correspond to the thermal relaxation times in blood vessels of 30 microns and 150 microns diameter, respectively. We investigated the use of picosecond Nd:YAG laser pulses for intraocular microsurgery. With a pulse duration of 100 picoseconds, only 70 microJ of pulse energy is required to consistently produce optical breakdown in the deep vitreous. The eyes in two cases of extensive hyperplastic pupillary membranes with significant reduction of visual acuity and clarity were subjected to sectioning of the membranes in the superior 270 degrees of the pupil using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Ten cases of choroidal melanoma were treated with Argon and/or Krypton laser photocoagulation in this retrospective study. Each patient received an average of 9.6 laser treatment sessions. We describe a case of iris vascular tufts which came to our attention because of a hyphaema. Laser treatment was carried out for the vascular anomalies. After a period of 3 months, fresh vascular anomalies had appeared in different locations. Further treatment led to permanent obliteration. We emphasize the importance of fluoro-iridography in the monitoring of vascular anomalies as it allows accurate targeting treatment.

The repair of injured or transected nerves is frequently encountered in head and neck surgery. Recently, CO2 lasers with milliwatt capability and micrometer spot sizes have been developed that may be used in nerve anastomosis. A comparative study was performed between microsuture and CO2 laser repair of transected sciatic nerves in rats. Laparoscopic laser therapy, using a Nd:YAG laser and an Olympus laparoscope, was performed in 221 cases. 0.5% dicaine spray was used intraperitoneally. The types of operations performed were tubal sterilization in 110 cases, vaporization of endometriotic lesions in 76 cases, lysis of pelvic adhesions in 13 cases, salpingostomy in 11 cases, salpingostomy for tubal pregnancy in 10 cases, and fenestration of cyst of Morgagni in one, the rate of success was 98.2% in tubal/sterilization. In 71 cases of endometriosis the pregnancy rate was 32.7% for R-AFS stage I-II, and 25.0% for stage III-IV cases

Fluid uptake was measured from accurate preoperative and postoperative patient weights for 25 consecutive patients undergoing Nd:YAG laser endometrial ablation under general anaesthesia. One patient had a uterine perforation with 5.1 litres of fluid deposited in the peritoneal cavity. Velopharyngeal sonorous snoring is best treated with uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). To reduce surgical risks and minimize the morbidity, a simplified carbon dioxide laser uvulopalatoplasty (LUPP) was performed under local anesthesia. Among a total of 146 patients who had a LUPP performed, there was no significant bleeding or postoperative episodes of asphyxia.
