Lip Repositioning Using Scalpel Technique for Management of Excessive Gingival Display Due to Short Upper Lip: A Case Report With One-Year Follow-Up.

Excessive gingival display (EGD), commonly referred to as a gummy smile, represents a significant esthetic concern influenced by the interplay of dentogingival, skeletal, and soft tissue factors. Lip repositioning has emerged as a minimally invasive surgical modality aimed at limiting the superior displacement of the upper lip during smiling. This case report describes the management of a 37-year-old female patient presenting with EGD due to a short upper lip, treated using a conventional scalpel-based lip repositioning technique. Preoperative gingival display of 3 mm was reduced to 0 mm immed…

Nasolabial symmetry following Tennison-Randall lip repair: a three-dimensional approach in 10-year-old patients with unilateral clefts of lip, alveolus and palate.

AIM: To assess the degree of facial symmetry in patients suffering from unilateral cleft lip, alveolus and palate (UCLAP) by determining differences between the cleft and the non-cleft hemifaces from 3D surface data. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In twenty-two 10-year-old UCLAP patients, who had the lip repaired using the Tennison-Randall technique and did not undergo further revisional surgery, differences were determined between landmarks, surface areas of the upper lip vermilion and nostrils and virtual volumes of midface, nose and upper lip for cleft and non-cleft sides, separately, after having …

Maxillary development and dental occlusion in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate after combined velar closure and lip-nose repair at different ages.

Maxillary morphology and occlusal development were studied after simultaneous velar closure and lip/nose reconstruction in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. Fifty-two Brazilian patients were divided into three groups according to the age at which they had had the one-stage operation (mean ages: 8, 18, and 77.5 months). They were compared with 30 similar white patients who had been operated on with a corresponding method, but where surgery had been carried out in three different stages. In general, differences in outcome between the groups were attributed to racial differences in f…

Lymphoid Interstitial Pneumonia (LIP) Revisited: A Critical Reappraisal of the Histologic Spectrum of "Radiologic" and "Pathologic" LIP in the Context of Diffuse Benign Lymphoid Proliferations of the Lung.

The use of lymphoid interstitial pneumonia (LIP) as a diagnostic term has changed considerably since its introduction. Utilizing a multi-institutional collection of 201 cases from the last 20 years that demonstrate features associated with the LIP rubric, we compared cases meeting strict histologic criteria of LIP per American Thoracic Society (ATS)/European Respiratory Society (ERS) consensus ("pathologic LIP"; n=62) with cystic cases fulfilling radiologic ATS/ERS criteria ("radiologic LIP"; n=33) and with other diffuse benign lymphoid proliferations. "Pathologic LIP" was associated with immu…

"Three Subunit" Classification of Lesser-Form Cleft Lip and Muscle Analysis and Reconstruction of These Subunits Based on the Microanatomic Structures of Muscles in the Normal Upper Lip.

BACKGROUND: The main phenotypic features of lesser-form cleft lip include nasal, philtrum, and vermilion deformities. The manifestations of lesser-form cleft lip vary greatly, and it is difficult to rebuild these subunits during the operation. METHODS: "Three subunits" classification of lesser-form cleft lip was identified as nasal deformity (N), philtrum deformity (P), or vermilion deformity (V); and slight deformity (0) or obvious deformity (1). A total of 200 patients with lesser-form cleft lip were classified into one of the following 8 types: N1P1V1, N1P1V0, N0P1V1, N1P0V1, N0P0V1, N1P0V…

The final orthodontic treatment outcome evaluation in patients with cleft lip and palate at Khon Kaen University Cleft Lip and Palate Center: a pilot study.

The primary objective of the present study was to use the Peer Assessment Rating (PAR) Index to assess the outcome of the final phase of treatment in cleft lip and palate patients with orthodontic treatment alone and with orthognathic surgery. A secondary objective was to determine the improvement in the occlusion of the two treatment alternatives. The study sample consisted of 27 patients who received orthodontic treatment alone and 7 patients who received orthodontic treatment combined with orthognathic surgery were evaluated. The results showed that the orthognathic surgery group had greate…

Interventions for treatment of herpes labialis (cold sores on the lips).

RATIONALE: Herpes labialis (also known as cold sores or fever blisters) is a highly prevalent recurrent infection caused by the herpes simplex virus. Recurrences arise from varied triggers. Standard treatments usually involve nucleoside antivirals. Several studies have investigated alternative treatments such as zinc, honey, and photodynamic therapy for their potential to shorten lesion duration and relieve symptoms, but most reviews exclude these therapies. We wished to address this evidence gap by evaluating both conventional and alternative approaches, synthesising evidence on efficacy and

Development and Validation of a Standardized Lip Fullness Grading Scale.

BACKGROUND: Lip augmentation is a common cosmetic procedure that requires an objective and validated scale to assess treatment outcomes. Existing lip fullness scales may not be universally applicable across ethnic groups. This study aimed to develop and validate the Humedix Lip Fullness Scale and assess its agreement with the Allergan Lip Fullness Scale. METHODS: A total of 53 females were photographed under standardized conditions. Five dermatologists independently evaluated lip fullness using the Humedix scale and analyzed intra- and inter-rater reliability using Cohen's and Fleiss' Kappa, …

Morphological Study of the Characteristics of Lips in Children With Mouth Breathing.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the association between long-term mouth breathing habits and the morphological characteristics of children's lips, providing a basis for clinical diagnosis and early intervention. Given the cross-sectional design and reliance on parental questionnaire-based exposure classification, causal inference is not warranted; findings are strictly associative. METHODS: A total of 210 children aged 6-12 years were enrolled, comprising 105 children clinically classified as long-term mouth-breathing children and 105 nasal-breathing children. Classification was based …

Primary mucocutaneous tuberculosis of the lower lip: an atypical presentation.

Primary mucocutaneous tuberculosis of the lower lip, without pulmonary or systemic involvement, is an uncommon presentation of cutaneous tuberculosis. The rare combination of lower lip swelling, vermilion border beading, gingival hyperplasia and nasal crusting, as seen in our adolescent patient further adds to the atypical nature of the disease while also highlighting diagnostic complexity. We therefore urge dermatologists to keep a high index of clinical suspicion and undertake relevant investigations to actively rule out tuberculosis especially in endemic areas in cases of chronic non-healin…
