Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) of the brain can have variable effects, plausibly driven by individual differences in neuroanatomy and resulting differences of the electric fields inside the brain. Here, we integrated individual simulations of electric fields during tES with source localization to predict variability of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) aftereffects on α-oscillations. In two experiments, participants received 20-min of either α-tACS (1 mA) or sham stimulation. Magnetoencephalogram (MEG) was recorded for 10-min before and after stimulation. tACS caus

PURPOSE: To study possible detection of structural abnormalities on 7T MRI that were not detected on 3T MRI and estimate the added value of MEG-guidance. For abnormalities found, analysis of convergence between clinical, MEG and 7T MRI localization of suspected epileptogenic foci.
METHODS: In adult patients with well-documented localization-related epilepsy in whom a previous 3T MRI did not demonstrate an epileptogenic lesion but MEG indicated a plausible epileptogenic focus, 7T MRI was performed. Based on semiologic data, visual analysis of the 7T images was performed as well as based on pri

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a useful non-invasive technique for presurgical evaluation of focal cortical dysplasia patients. We aimed at clarifying the precise spatial relationship between the spiking volume determined with MEG, the seizure onset zone and the lesional volume in patients with focal cortical dysplasia. We studied the spatial relationships between the MEG spiking volume determined with a recent analysis pipeline, the seizure-onset zone location determined with a quantitative index calculated from intracranial EEG signals ('Epileptogenicity Index') and the lesional volume deli…

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) often present with unilateral motor symptoms that eventually spread to the other side. This symptom l … s been difficult. To identify the neurophysiological basis of symptom laterality in PD, we recorded magnetoencephalography (MEG) during left- and right-hand movement paradigms in patients with PD who exhibited either RD or LD symptomatology. The beta oscillations serving these movements were then imaged using beamforming methods, and we extracted the time series of the …

A critical component of comprehending language in context is identifying the entities that individual linguistic expressions refer to. While previous research has shown that language comprehenders resolve reference quickly and incrementally, little is currently known about the neural basis of successful reference resolution. Using source localized MEG, we provide evidence across 3 experiments and 2 languages that successful reference resolution in simple visual displays is associated with increased activation in the medial parietal lobe. In each trial, participants saw a simple visual display

This paper discusses the phenomenological nature of the sense of boundaries (SB), based on the case of S, who has practiced mindfulness in the Satipathana and Theravada Vipassana traditions for about 40years and accumulated around 20,000h of meditative practice. S's unique abilities enable him to describe his inner lived experience with great precision and clarity. S was asked to shift between three different stages: (a) the default state, (b) the dissolving of the SB, and (c) the disappearance of the SB. Based on his descriptions, we identified seven categories (with some overlap) that alter

In this study we investigate systematic patterns of rapidly changing sensor-level interdependencies in resting MEG data obtained from 23 children experiencing reading difficulties (RD) and 27 non-impaired readers (NI). Three-minute MEG time series were band-passed and subjected to blind source separation (BSS) prior to estimating sensor interdependencies using the weighted phase synchronization measure (wPLI). Dynamic sensor-level network properties were then derived for two network metrics (global and local efficiency). The temporal decay of long-range temporal correlations in network metrics

Neuro-electromagnetic recording techniques (EEG, MEG, iEEG) provide high temporal resolution data to study the dynamics of neurocognitive networks: large scale neural assemblies involved in task-specific information processing. How does a neurocognitive network reorganize spatiotemporally on the order of a few milliseconds to process specific aspects of the task? At what times do networks segregate for task processing, and at what time scales does integration of information occur via changes in functional connectivity? Here, we propose a data analysis framework-Temporal microstructure of corti

A variety of pharmacological agents are clinically used to treat pain-related diseases, including in the orofacial region. The effects of analgesics upon cerebral sites responsible for pain perception have yet to be determined. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of ketamine, an N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) antagonist, and fentanyl, a narcotic analgetic, on pain-related somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields (pain-SEFs) induced by CO(2) laser stimulation of the trigeminally innervated area. Two peaks with latencies of approximately 120 and 200 ms were observed in pain-SEFs aft

Embouchure dystonia is a focal task-specific disorder involving abnormal non-coordinated movements and involuntary muscle contraction around the mouth. In professional brass players it is often so disabling that patients have to limit or give up their occupation. We examined the somatosensory homuncular representation and measured gap detection sensitivity of the lips in eight former professional musicians affected by embouchure dystonia and eight control subjects. Relative to controls, the patients' digit, and especially the thumb, representations were shifted in a lateral direction towards t

The approximately 20-Hz component of the human mu rhythm originates predominantly in the primary motor cortex. We monitored with a whole-scalp neuromagnetometer the reactivity of the approximately 20-Hz rhythm as an index of the functional state of the primary motor cortex in seven patients suffering from Unverricht-Lundborg type (ULD) progressive myoclonus epilepsy (PME) and in seven healthy control subjects. In patients, the motor cortex rhythm was on average 5 Hz lower in frequency and its strength was double compared with controls. To study reactivity of the approximately 20-Hz rhythm, lef

Magnetoencephalographic responses recorded from auditory cortex evoked by brief and rapidly successive stimuli differed between adults with poor vs. good reading abilities in four important ways. First, the response amplitude evoked by short-duration acoustic stimuli was stronger in the post-stimulus time range of 150-200 ms in poor readers than in normal readers. Second, response amplitude to rapidly successive and brief stimuli that were identical or that differed significantly in frequency were substantially weaker in poor readers compared with controls, for interstimulus intervals of 100 o

Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields after mechanical stimulation by air-pressure-induced tapping which was applied to the forehead and occiput were examined in normal human subjects. The equivalent current dipole (ECD) of the initial magnetic field, 1M, was identified in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) in the hemisphere contralateral to the stimulation. The ECD of the subsequent magnetic fields, 2M, was identified in bilateral second sensory cortices (SII). The ECD position of 1M in SI generated after the scalp stimulation was closely inferior to the hand area of the SI, which was consi

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) measures magnetic fields generated by current flow in neural assemblies, providing a non-invasive means to track brain function. In recent years, the MEG field has been revolutionised by a new class of field sensor called an Optically Pumped Magnetometer (OPM). OPMs are small, lightweight, and allow construction of wearable and reconfigurable arrays of 'triaxial' field sensors (that measure magnetic fields along three axes simultaneously). These systems can be used to capture MEG data across the life span, from infancy to adulthood. With such multi-axis sensin…

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Optically pumped magnetometer-based magnetoencephalography (OPM-MEG) is advancing toward wearable and high-density sensor configurations, posing significant engineering challenges in miniaturization, thermal management, and scalable integration. Here, we present a high-performance wearable OPM-MEG system that addresses these challenges.
METHODS: The system was developed through a system-level co-design of the sensor head and electronic control units (ECUs) with a fully automated control workflow. To reduce thermal dissipation and lower scalp temperature, we implemented a…

Approximately 30% of patients with epilepsy are drug-resistant, and for many of them surgical resection of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) offers the best chance of seizure freedom. Because the EZ cannot be measured directly by any single test, it must be inferred from the convergence of complementary imaging markers, and multimodal neuroimaging fusion has therefore become central to modern presurgical evaluation. This critical narrative review examines what each modality-structural MRI, [18F]FDG-PET, ictal SPECT/SISCOM, magnetoencephalography and electric source imaging, functional MRI, diffusion…

In environments with multiple talkers, humans can 'tune in' to a speaker of interest while ignoring competing voices. In such conditions, however, auditory cortices track the attended speech envelope rhythms (cortical tracking of speech, CTS) less accurately than in quiet, hindering intelligibility. Visual speech cues (e.g., lip movements) can enhance this CTS, but it remains unclear whether other non-auditory sensory cues, such as tactile input, provide comparable benefits through similar neural mechanisms. Here, using magnetoencephalography, we quantified CTS as the coherence between the spe…
