Mental Health of Canadian Firefighters: The Impact of Sleep.

Volunteer and career firefighters are at risk of major depressive disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), alcohol use disorder, and other mental health disorders due to the demanding and unpredictable nature of their employment. The mental health risks are exacerbated by the need to work extended hours, night shifts, and/or rotating schedules, or the competing demands of other employment, especially in volunteer firefighters. The mental health disorders and risk factors interact with altered sleeping patterns. In the current study, we examined volunteer and career firefighters regardi

Leg ulcer and osteomyelitis due to methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus infection after fracture repair treatment: a case highlighting the potential role of prostaglandin E₁ vasodilator.

Prostaglandins appear to reduce biofilm formation and chronicization of infections, and stimulate a rapid and effective clearance of infecting micro-organisms. We report a case of recovery from methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) osteomyelitis after multidisciplinary management with antibiotics, anti-thrombotics and prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) vasodilator, in a patient with tibial plateau fracture repaired with internal fixation devices. A 47-year-old HIV-negative male with chronic ulcer on the proximal third of the left leg was admitted to the Orthopaedic Unit of the Orestano Cli

Recommendations for identification and public health management of persons with chronic hepatitis B virus infection.

Serologic testing for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is the primary way to identify persons with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Testing has been recommended previously for pregnant women, infants born to HBsAg-positive mothers, household contacts and sex partners of HBV-infected persons, persons born in countries with HBsAg prevalence of >/=8%, persons who are the source of blood or body fluid exposures that might warrant postexposure prophylaxis (e.g., needlestick injury to a health-care worker or sexual assault), and persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus. Complementing humanitarian staff care with arts-based initiatives? Viewpoints from in-house mental health professionals.

Over the past decade, research on the mental health of humanitarian staff has gained momentum, prompting organizations to increasingly support and invest in workers' mental health and well-being. However, many of the existing initiatives-such as one-on-one talk therapy-are grounded in Euro-American traditions. These approaches may not align with the cultural frameworks or preferences of all staff, potentially leaving significant segments of the workforce underserved. Furthermore, challenges related to team cohesion are difficult to address within current staff care structures. Against this bac

Mental Health of the Roma Population in Spain: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVES: The Roma population in Spain faces multiple known risk factors and shows indicators of a worse mental health status than the general population. A few studies consider them a vulnerable population and found higher rates of mental health issues. This review aims to analyze the mental health status of the Roma population in Spain through existing literature. As a secondary objective, we have considered studying the degree of development of this research field in the Spanish context. DESIGN: Due to the lack of clarity about the availability and quality of the existing information, a

Does syndromic surveillance assist public health practice in early detecting respiratory epidemics? Evidence from a wide Italian retrospective experience.

BACKGROUND: Large-scale diagnostic testing has been proven ineffective for prompt monitoring of the spread of COVID-19. Electronic resources may facilitate enhanced early detection of epidemics. Here, we aimed to retrospectively explore whether examining trends in the use of emergency and healthcare services and the Google search engine is useful in detecting Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus outbreaks early compared with the currently used swab-based surveillance system. METHODS: Healthcare Utilization databases of the Italian region of Lombardy and the Google Trends website were

Case of Gynandroblastoma of the Ovary with Raised AFP and Associated DICER 1 Mutation.

Accurate diagnosis is a necessary step in the management of breast cancer. In women with breast cancer, diagnosis can confirm the presence of the disease, reduce treatment delays, and clarify the predictive and prognostic features of the cancer, which help in planning treatment and counseling women. In women with benign breast conditions, accurate diagnosis avoids erroneous treatment for breast cancer, which can have devastating consequences for the woman and unnecessarily consumes resources. The panel distinguishes between a "clinical diagnosis" of breast cancer (one based on signs and sympto

Learning from success cases: ecological analysis of potential pathways to universal access to family planning care in low- and middle-income countries.

Background  Universal access to family planning services is a well-recognized human right and several countries and organizations are committed to this goal. Our objective was to identify countries who improved family planning coverage in the last 40 years and investigate which contexts enabled those advances.  Methods  Analyses were based on data from publicly available national health surveys carried out since 1986 in Egypt, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Brazil, and Ecuador, selected based on previous evidence. We estimated demand for family planning satisfied with modern methods (mDFPS) fo

The psychosocial and emotional experiences of cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11th, 2020. Global social lockdowns were instigated to reduce spread and prevent health-services from becoming overwhelmed. People having treatment for cancer are known to have heightened psychological/emotional burden. The combined impact of managing pandemic regulations alongside this may present additional burden. The purpose of this systematic review is to examine current evidence of the psychological and emotional impact of COVID-19 on people with cancer, early in the pandemic. METHODS: Five electronic

Community health care workers in pursuit of TB: Discourses and dilemmas.

Community-led tuberculosis (TB) active case finding is widely promoted, heavily funded, but many efforts fail to meet expectations. The underlying reasons why TB symptom screening programs underperform are poorly understood. This study examines Nigerian stakeholders' insights to characterize the mechanisms, enabling structures and influences that lead programs to succeed or fail. Eight focus group discussions were held with Community Health Workers (CWs) from four models of community-based TB screening and referral. In-depth interviews were conducted with 2 State TB program managers, 8 Communi

Healthcare utilization in older patients using personal emergency response systems: an analysis of electronic health records and medical alert data : Brief Description: A Longitudinal Retrospective Analyses of healthcare utilization rates in older patients using Personal Emergency Response Systems from 2011 to 2015.

BACKGROUND: Personal Emergency Response Systems (PERS) are traditionally used as fall alert systems for older adults, a population that contributes an overwhelming proportion of healthcare costs in the United States. Previous studies focused mainly on qualitative evaluations of PERS without a longitudinal quantitative evaluation of healthcare utilization in users. To address this gap and better understand the needs of older patients on PERS, we analyzed longitudinal healthcare utilization trends in patients using PERS through the home care management service of a large healthcare organization.

Supervised self-administration of outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy: a report from a large tertiary hospital in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT) has become established as a standard of care in most Australian hospitals to treat a variety of infections. Since 1998, the Alternate Site Infusion Service (ASIS) has provided an OPAT service to five hospitals in southern Brisbane, Queensland, using predominantly a patient or carer administration model (self-administered, S-OPAT). The aim of this study was to evaluate outcomes of our S-OPAT programme. METHODS: Consecutive patients treated by ASIS at the Princess Alexandra Hospital from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011 were revi

Patient journeys mapping in health management for older patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: a qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: Management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in older adults remains suboptimal, often due to a fragmented, acute-care-focused approach that fails to address the comprehensive needs of patients across the care continuum. A thorough understanding of the patient journey is essential to identify systemic gaps and potential intervention points. AIM: This study aims to systematically map the complete cycle of the COPD patient journey in older adults, elucidating their multidimensional needs, challenges, and critical touchpoints throughout the stages of screening, diagnosi
