A proposed protocol for correlation between bone density in hemimandibular hyperplasia radiography and histopathological findings - A retrospective study.

The role of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) in surgical planning can be assessed based on the correlation among bone density (BD/HU), radiographic values, and the histopathological appearance of hyperplastic overgrowth in mandibular condyles (hemimandibular hyperplasia/osteochondroma). The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between LDCT indices of bone-density measurements in surgical planning and histopathological specimens. The patients incuded in this study underwent detailed radiological evaluation as preparation for further clinical procedures. Excised condyles were eva

The influence of diagnoses on patient satisfaction during inpatient stays: A prospective study.

The aim of this study was to assess patient satisfaction relating to inpatient stays. In this prospective observational study, adult patients with oncological (oral cancer, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw) and non-oncological (mandibular fracture) diagnoses, and who had undergone surgery, were contacted 4 weeks after discharge. Two validated questionnaires were used: EORTC QLQ-C30 for quality of life and IN-PATSAT32 for patient satisfaction. For quality of life, the mandibular fracture group had a lower impairment of physical functioning (M = 83.59, SD = 24.44; p = 0.029) in compar

Hypoproteinemia Associated with a Gigantic Odontogenic Tumor: A Report of 2 Cases.

BACKGROUND Hypoproteinemia is caused by a decrease in protein level in the blood. This report describes 2 cases of hypoproteinemia associated with a gigantic odontogenic tumor. CASE REPORT Case 1, a 65-year-old man, visited our hospital with the chief concern of swelling in the right mandible, approximately 100 mm in diameter, and ameloblastoma was diagnosed. Abscess drainage was observed in the fistula of the tumors. Total protein and albumin levels were low before surgery. Hemimandibulectomy was performed under general anesthesia. The final pathological diagnosis based on the specimen was am

Central mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising directly from a glandular odontogenic cyst of the mandible: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Central mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is a rare salivary gland tumor that affects the jawbone. Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is also a rare odontogenic developmental cyst with glandular differentiation. GOC shares some histological features with central MEC, and a pre-existing GOC can develop into central MEC. Here, we present a rare case of central MEC developed directly from a pre-existing GOC of the mandible. CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old Japanese man presented with a cystic lesion in the right third molar region. Histologically, the biopsy specimen demonstrated both typ

Functional Outcomes Following Temporomandibular Joint Dissection Performed During Surgery for Skull Base Tumors.

BACKGROUND: During skull base tumor surgery, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dissection is commonly performed. The impact of this procedure on patients' postoperative diet and TMJ function is a matter of concern to surgeons. METHODS: We reviewed the Craniomandibular Index (CMI) for 32 patients (15 men and 17 women) who underwent TMJ dissection during surgery for skull base tumors between August 2015 and May 2018. RESULTS: Fifteen patients underwent removal of the mandibular condyle, and 17 had the condyle preserved. Twenty-one patients mainly underwent infratemporal fossa approach, and 11 unde

Advances in facial nerve management in the head and neck cancer patient.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize best practices in facial nerve management for patients with head and neck cancer. In addition, we provide a review of recent literature on novel innovations and techniques in facial reanimation surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: Although recommended when tumor ablation surgery requires facial nerve sacrifice, facial reanimation procedures are not always performed. Concurrent dynamic facial reanimation with masseteric nerve transfers and cable graft repair can preserve native facial muscle function. Static suspension can provide facial suppo

The vascularized sural nerve graft based on a peroneal artery perforator for reconstruction of the inferior alveolar nerve defect.

The sural nerve has been described for nerve reconstruction of the maxillofacial region since it provides many advantages. We report a case of a vascularized sural nerve graft based on a peroneal artery perforator for immediate reconstruction after the removal of intraosseous neuroma originating in the inferior alveolar nerve. The patient had a neuroma caused by iatrogenic injury to the inferior alveolar nerve. A 4-cm long neuroma existed in the inferior alveolar nerve and was resected. A peroneal perforator was chosen as the pedicle of the vascularized sural nerve graft for the nerve gap. The

Cone beam computed tomographic findings in temporomandibular joint disorders.

Radiographic examination and imaging play an important role in the diagnosis and management of most temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Several techniques have been used for the examination of the TMJ, including conventional tomography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), arthrography, computed tomography (CT), and, recently, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).

Goldenhar's syndrome--case report.

Goldenhar's syndrome is a rare condition described initially in the early 1950's. It is characterized by a combination of anomalies: dermal epibulbar cysts, auricular appendices and malformation of the ears. In 1963, Gorlin suggested the name oculo-auriculo-vertebral (OAV) dysplasia for this condition and also included vertebral anomalies as signs of the syndrome. The etiology of this rare disease is not fully understood, as it has shown itself variable genetically and of unclear causes. This work reports a case of Goldenhar's syndrome in an 11-year-old female, who presented all classical sign

Cementoblastoma associated with a primary tooth: a rare pediatric lesion.

An intraosseous, slightly painful swelling was noted upon clinical examination of an eight-year-old girl. The swelling was of an unspecified duration and slow growing in nature. A radiopaque mass with a radiolucent periphery attached to the roots of the mandibular right second primary molar was noted on a periapical radiograph. The diagnosis of cementoblastoma was verified by the histologic assessment.

Trapezius osteomyocutaneous flap for mandibular reconstruction.

The recent introduction of myocutaneous flaps has kindled the interest in including bone in the flap to reconstruct the anterior mandibular arch and floor of mouth--still one of the most challenging reconstructions in head and neck surgery. The trapezius osteomyocutaneous compound flap has certain advantages over other osteomyocutaneous flaps; the scapula, being a flat bone, receives relatively more blood supply from the periosteum. The absence of bone resorption at more than two years postoperatively has been encouraging, and it has been possible to reconstruct mandible from angle to angle.

Benign osteoblastoma of the mandible. A clinical-pathologic review and report of a case.

Benign osteoblastoma is an uncommon, solitary, osteoid and bone-producing tumor which is characterized by prevalent active osteoblasts and rich vascularized delicate fibrous stroma, previously regarded as malignant. The term benign osteoblastoma was recently proposed by different authors to separate this lesion from other solitary benign bone tumors. It most often involves long bones and vertebral column and other bones, and also occurs in jaw bones. There is a close histopathologic similarity between benign osteoblastoma and osteoid osteoma; consequently, much debate about them exists. Benign

Routine biopsy leading to the diagnosis of strongyloidiasis.

Routine removal of a third molar, together with histopathologic soft-tissue examination and a high index of suspicion, led to the diagnosis of a generalized Strongyloides stercoralis infestation. The case of a patient with this unusual combination of pathologic entities is presented.

[The problem of pre-prosthetic surgical procedures following neoplasm surgery in the maxillofacial area].

The author reports of 215 patients with oral malignant tumour of whom 21.5% needed preprosthetic-surgical measures. The indication for preprosthetic-surgical intervention is determined by the site and the size of the tumour and by the method used for the primary operation. Some preferred surgical techniques are discussed.

Disarticulation resections of the mandible: a prospective review of 16 cases.

PURPOSE: This article provides a review of the disarticulation resection of the mandible for various benign and malignant tumors and non-neoplastic processes. In so doing, the author proposes a classification to describe extension of pathology into the condylar region, thereby requiring its sacrifice. Recommendations are also proposed for preservation versus sacrifice of the meniscus when performing a disarticulation resection of the mandible. Finally, complications are evaluated in this type of mandibular resection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This review is based on the author's accumulated clini

Tumor Depth of Invasion (Tumor > 4 cm/Depth > 10 mm and Depth > 20 mm) and Through Cortex/Skin Invasion are Both Valid Criteria for Classifying Tumors as pT4a in AJCC 2018 Oral Cavity Cancer Staging System.

BACKGROUND: According to the AJCC third to seventh edition staging manuals (1988-2010), the presence of through cortex and/or skin invasion in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) identifies T4a tumors. The AJCC eighth edition (2018) introduced a depth of invasion (DOI) > 20 mm as a criterion for pT4a. Subsequently, a revision maintained that tumors > 4 cm with a DOI > 10 mm should be classified as pT4a. We sought to analyze the prognostic impact of the three distinct criteria identifying pT4a disease. METHODS: We examined 667 consecutive patients with pT3-4 buccal/gum/hard palate/retr
