Medication adherence and its possible associated factors in patients with acne vulgaris: A cross-sectional study of 200 patients in Iran.

There are several etiologic factors involved in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris. Therefore, current treatment guidelines recommend applying different classes of medications for it. This makes medication adherence a challenging issue in acne patients. The current study was designed to assess medication adherence and its possible associated factors in patients with acne vulgaris. This study was performed on patients with acne vulgaris in two dermatology clinics of Imam Khomeini Hospital and Razi Hospital. A validated questionnaire (ECOB, Elaboration d'un outil d'evaluation de l'observance des

Maldistributed health care services: restructuring the current regulatory system.

The American health care delivery system currently suffers from a variety of problems; among the most intractable of these is a maldistribution of health care services. This Note focuses on two aspects of this problem: unnecessary hospital beds, and medically underserved populations. The Note also discusses the related issues of hospital cost inflation and inefficient use of limited resources. It then examines the current statutory remedies for these problems, and subjects their effectiveness to a two-tiered test. The Note concludes that the existing mechanisms, while partially effective, ulti

A Dermatological Dilemma: The Importance of Recognizing Dermatologic Manifestations of Drug Reaction With Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) in Skin of Color Patients.

Many dermatologic conditions that are seen in medical literature are typically on lighter skin tones making it easier to identify. This can pose a difficult problem in the care of skin of color patients. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of dermatologic manifestations in skin of color patients and the disparities that exist in the medical field. Here, we present the case of a 51-year-old African American male who was hospitalized on a prolonged course of antibiotics found to have drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS). Although the initial diagnosi

Balancing acute medical management of acute kidney injury and hyperkalaemia versus medicines optimisation for long-term Cardio-Renal-Metabolic (CaReMe) diseases: a narrative review.

Cardio-Renal-Metabolic (CaReMe) diseases, in the form of heart failure, chronic kidney disease and diabetes mellitus, justify prescription of multiple prognostically beneficial medications, specifically renin-angiotensin system inhibitors, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, and sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors. Use of these medications is complicated by association with adverse effects, particularly acute kidney injury and hyperkalaemia. Balancing risk and benefit is a common dilemma in acute medicine, with increasingly frequent and complex treatment decisions. Physicians should

Quantile regression: a statistical tool for out-of-hospital research.

The performance of out-of-hospital systems is frequently evaluated based on the times taken to respond to emergency requests and to transport patients to hospital. The 90th percentile is a common statistic used to measure these indicators, since they reflect performance for most patients. Traditional regression models, which assess how the mean of a distribution varies with changes in patient or system characteristics, are thus of limited use to researchers in out-of-hospital care. In contrast, quantile regression models estimate how specified quantiles (or percentiles) of the distribution of

Peritonectomy and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy: cost analysis and sustainability.

BACKGROUND: Malignancies of the peritoneum remain a challenge in any hospital that accepts to manage them, due not only to difficulties associated with the complexity of the procedures involved but also the costs, which - in Italy and other countries that use a diagnosis-related group (DRG) system - are not adequately reimbursed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed data relative to 24 patients operated on between September 2010 and May 2013 with special regard to operating room expenditure, ICU stay, duration of hospitalization, and DRG reimbursement. The total costs per patient included clinic

Integrating a Large Language Model to Streamline Nursing Handover Documentation Across Multiple Hospitals in Taiwan: Development and Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: The global nursing shortage, exacerbated by heavy workloads and high turnover rates associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, continues to undermine care quality and nurse well-being. Although digital health technologies have enhanced coordination, improved communication, and reduced clinical errors in nursing practice, they have also increased nurses' documentation burden. Advances in large language models (LLMs) and other generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools facilitate the generation of accurate reports from electronic medical records (EMRs), thereby streamlining documen

October 7th 2023 mass casualty incident in southern Israel: lessons for emergency preparedness and management.

BACKGROUND: Mass Casualty Incidents (MCIs) pose significant challenges for healthcare systems. While policies are typically crafted based on past experiences, the lessons learned from each incident play a crucial role in enhancing emergency preparedness. On October 7th, 2023, Israel came under the largest terror attack in its history. During an ongoing terror attack, more than 1300 Israelis were killed, and more than 200 were abducted to Gaza. During the first day of the attack, 1457 casualties were evacuated to a hospital, approximately half of them to Soroka University Medical Center (SUMC).

An Integrated Influenza Surveillance Framework Based on National Influenza-Like Illness Incidence and Multiple Hospital Electronic Medical Records for Early Prediction of Influenza Epidemics: Design and Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Influenza is a leading cause of death worldwide and contributes to heavy economic losses to individuals and communities. Therefore, the early prediction of and interventions against influenza epidemics are crucial to reduce mortality and morbidity because of this disease. Similar to other countries, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (TWCDC) has implemented influenza surveillance and reporting systems, which primarily rely on influenza-like illness (ILI) data reported by health care providers, for the early prediction of influenza epidemics. However, these survei
