The artificial neural system has attracted tremendous attention in the field of artificial intelligence due to operate mode of parallel computation which is superior to traditional Von Neumann computers in processing complex sensory data and real-time situations with extremely low power dissipation. Remarkable progress has been made in the hardware-based electric-double-layer synaptic transistors as its modulation by ion movement is similar to biological synapse for the past few years. Unfortunately, long-term potentiation (LTP) timescale is still a big challenge in hardware-based electric-dou

The notion of 'accelerated long-term forgetting' has often been attributed to disrupted 'late' memory consolidation. Nevertheless, methodological issues in the literature have left this theory unproven, leading some to suggest such findings may be reflective of subtle acquisition or early retention deficits. This study attempts to address such issues, and also to explore which pathophysiological variables are associated with forgetting rates. Eighteen participants with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and eighteen matched controls completed background neuropsychological measurement of immediate an

A large fraction of the intestinal microbiota is highly coated with secretory IgA, and bacteria-specific IgA is believed to shape the composition of the microbiota. A hallmark of the adaptive immune system is immunological memory to specific antigens. However, whether there is strong and persistent memory of secretory antibodies to bacterial antigens has not been determined. Here we show that ultra long-lived CD19-CD45- (age > 20 years) plasma cells (PCs) residing in the human small intestine produce IgA that binds to most taxa of a diverse anaerobic microbiota culture. Long-lived CD19-CD45+ (

BACKGROUND: Perform a statistical analysis of the long-term hearing results for 2 groups after stapedotomy using different heat-memory stapes prostheses.
METHODS: A retrospective study of 42 patients who underwent stapedotomy using either NiTiBOND (n=25) or SMart Nitinol (n=17) thermal shape memory prostheses. Statistical differences were assessed with univariate and multivariate analysis. Success was defined as a postoperative air-bone gap (ABG) ≤ 10 dB. A Pvalue < .05 was considered statistically significant.
RESULTS: The audiological outcomes were measured at an average of 7.3 and 13.4 ye

Tissue health is dictated by the capacity to respond to perturbations and then return to homeostasis. Mechanisms that initiate, maintain, and regulate immune responses in tissues are therefore essential. Adaptive immunity plays a key role in these responses, with memory and tissue residency being cardinal features. A corresponding role for innate cells is unknown. Here, we have identified a population of innate lymphocytes that we term tissue-resident memory-like natural killer (NKRM) cells. In response to murine cytomegalovirus infection, we show that circulating NK cells were recruited in a

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Stroke is an uncommon cause of amnesia. We describe in detail 3 cases of anterograde amnesia and confabulation secondary to acute ischemic stroke and review the available literature.
RECENT FINDINGS: In our case series, all 3 patients presented with anterograde amnesia and 2 of 3 copresented with prominent confabulation. These symptoms were recognized in delayed fashion, and no patients received IV tissue plasminogen activator (tPA). Although stroke infarct topology was variable, all 3 patients had infarction of the fornix. Long-term follow-up was obtained in 2 of 3 patient

Clinical studies demonstrate that prenatal stress causes cognitive deficits and increases vulnerability to affective disorders in children and adolescents. The underlying mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Here, we reported that prenatal stress (10 unpredictable, 1 s, 0.8 mA foot shocks per day during gestational days 13-19) impaired long-term potentiation (LTP) but facilitated long-term depression (LTD) in hippocampal CA1 region in slices of the prenatal stressed offspring (5 weeks old). Cross-fostering neonate offspring by the prenatal stressed or control mothers did not change the eff

This experiment investigated the effect on memory, in rats, of the bilateral intrahippocampal post-training infusion of two different inhibitors of protein kinase C activity, staurosporin and CGP41231. Male Wistar rats were implanted bilaterally with cannulae aimed at the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus. After recovery from surgery, they were trained in step-down inhibitory avoidance using a 0.5-mA footshock and tested for retention 24 h later. Immediately or 30, 120, or 180 min after training they received, through the cannulae, infusions of vehicle, staurosporin (1.0 microgram), or CGP4

Most investigators understand sensory conflict to mean a discontinuity between either visual, proprioceptive, and somatosensory input, or semicircular canal and otolith input. Few hypotheses have attempted to define specific physiological mechanisms linking the conflict with the sickness. Suggestions that the theory be renamed the neural mismatch theory allow for the possibility that central integrative mechanisms are involved in interpreting the significance of the sensory environment and that the conflict between visual or vestibular input systems or between separate components of the vestib

Innate immune memory (IIM) is the process by which, upon a primary challenge, innate immune cells alter their epigenetic, transcriptional, and immunometabolic profiles, resulting in modified secondary responses. Unlike infections or other immune-system-related diseases, the role of IIM in nonpathogenic contexts is less understood. An increasing body of research has shown that normal microbiota members or their metabolic byproducts induce alternative memory phenotypes, suggesting that memory cells contribute to homeostasis in mucosal areas. In this review, we discuss the newest insights in the

Chemotherapeutic agents are widely used to treat patients with systemic cancer. The efficacy of these therapies is undermined by their adverse side-effect profiles such as cognitive deficits that have a negative impact on the quality of life of cancer survivors. Cognitive side effects occur across a variety of domains, including memory, executive function, and processing speed. Such impairments are exacerbated under cognitive challenges and a subgroup of patients experience long-term impairments. Episodic memory in rats can be examined using a source memory task. In the current study, rats rec

BACKGROUND: Despite effective suppression of HIV-1 replication by antiretroviral therapy (ART), persistent viral reservoirs prevent cure and necessitate lifelong treatment. While short-term dynamics of HIV-1 rebound following treatment interruption have been extensively studied, the longer-term consequences of immune perturbation and transient viraemia for reservoir quality and immune architecture remain incompletely understood.
METHODS: We leveraged a rare historical human cohort that experienced prolonged viral rebound during a dendritic cell-based therapeutic vaccine study as a "perturbati

The hippocampo-parahippocampal area (medial temporal lobe system: MTL) plays an important role on human memory. Its bilateral damage may produce selective and severe impairment of anterograde and retrograde episodic memory. Our MRI volumetric study of 5 cases of pure MTL amnesia secondary to herpes simplex encephalitis showed that degree of amnesia and recovery was significantly correlated with the volume of the remaining or functioning MTL. It has to be kept in mind that MTL is a part of a widely distributed memory system. Our functional imaging studies on verbal memory showed that one of the

4-Methylumbelliferone (4-MU) inhibits hyaluronic acid (HA) synthesis and is currently approved in Europe for biliary spasm. 4-MU administration reduces perineuronal nets (PNNs), and enzymatic degradation of PNNs in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) attenuates memory impairment. Although 4-MU has therapeutic efficacy in rodent models of fibrosis and cancer, it has not been examined in an Alzheimer's model. Here, we evaluated the impact of long-term 4-MU treatment in the APP/PS1 amyloid mouse model. From three months of age, mice were on either a vehicle or 4-MU-supplemented diet for 70 d

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLHIV) exhibit reduced seroprotection and faster antibody waning after hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination. Data on long-term persistence and immunological memory following enhanced vaccination schedules are limited.
METHODS: In this interventional study, PLHIV who previously responded to a modified primary HBV vaccination schedule (four 40-μg doses) were reassessed after a median follow-up of 14.5 years. Anti-HBs titers were measured before and 1-6 months after administration of a 40 μg HBV booster dose.
RESULTS: Among 75 participants, 81,3% maintained se

In addition to cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity is associated with cognitive deficits. In rodents, it has been shown that long-term high-fat diet (HFD) consumption leads to the alteration of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis resulting in increased corticosterone release. However, mechanisms underpinning cognitive impairments induced by long-term HFD intake are unclear. Herein we evaluated the effects of systemic administration of glucocorticoid synthesis inhibitor metyrapone on cognitive performance assessed by novel object recognition t

UNLABELLED: Mathematical performance implies a series of numerical and mathematical skills (both innate and derived from formal training) as well as certain general cognitive abilities that, if inadequate, can have a cascading effect on mathematics learning. These latter skills were the focus of the present systematic review.
METHOD: The reviewing process was conducted according to the PRISMA statement. We included 46 studies comparing school-aged children's performance with and without math difficulties in the following cognitive domains: processing speed, phonological awareness, short- and

Long-term immunological memory to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is crucial for the development of population-level immunity, which is the aim of vaccination approaches. Reports on rapidly decreasing antibody titers have led to questions regarding the efficacy of humoral immunity alone. The relevance of T cell memory after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains unclear. Here, we investigated SARS-CoV-2 antibody and T cell responses in matched samples of COVID-19 convalescent individuals up to 6 months after infection. Longitudinal analysis revealed decreasing

Regulated insertion and removal of postsynaptic AMPA glutamate receptors (AMPARs) mediates hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) synaptic plasticity underlying learning and memory. In Alzheimer's disease β-amyloid (Aβ) oligomers may impair learning and memory by altering AMPAR trafficking and LTP/LTD balance. Importantly, Ca2+-permeable AMPARs (CP-AMPARs) assembled from GluA1 subunits are excluded from hippocampal synapses basally but can be recruited rapidly during LTP and LTD to modify synaptic strength and signaling. By employing mouse knockin mutations tha

Gene disruption studies have shown that the Ca(2+)-stimulated adenylyl cyclases, AC1 and AC8, are critical for some forms of synaptic plasticity, including long-term potentiation as well as long-term memory formation (LTM). It is hypothesized that these enzymes are required for LTM to support the increased expression of a family of genes regulated through the cAMP/Ca(2+) response element-binding protein/cAMP response element transcriptional pathway. In contrast to AC1 and AC8, AC3 is a Ca(2+)-inhibited adenylyl cyclase that plays an essential role in olfactory signal transduction. Coupling of
