The somatotopic localisation of the descending cortical tract in the cerebral peduncle: a study using MRI of changes following Wallerian degeneration in the cerebral peduncle after a supratentorial vascular lesion.

We studied the effects of Wallerian degeneration in the cerebral peduncle shown by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) following a supratentorial vascular lesion, to identify the somatotopic localisation of the descending cortical tracts. Patients with a lesion involving a large area of a cerebral hemisphere had an area of abnormal signal intensity in the whole cerebral peduncle, suggesting Wallerian degeneration of all the whole descending cortical tracts. With a small lesion confined to the precentral gyrus, corona radiata, or posterior limb of the internal capsule there was an abnormal signal

MRI of dorsal mesencephalic lipomas.

We detected 23 intracranial lipomas using MRI. Among them were nine pericallosal lipomas, six lipomas at the dorsal surface of the midbrain, and eight in other locations. In this paper, six lipomas at the dorsal surface of the midbrain were analyzed. Five of these lipomas were in the quadrigeminal cistern and one in the left-sided quadrigeminal cistern. Excluding the smallest lipoma, five of the six lipomas had irregular margins and were broadly based on the surface of the midbrain. In these five cases, deformities of the brain parenchyma were observed adjacent to the lipomas. A mildly dilated

Does oxidative stress participate in nerve cell death in Parkinson's disease?

Parkinson's disease is characterized by a massive neuronal loss in several cell groups of the midbrain. However, the most consistent lesions are observed in dopaminergic systems including nigral neurons. Although the cause of this neuronal loss remains unknown, oxidative stress has been suspected to participate in the mechanism of nerve cell death for several reasons. (1) Lipid peroxidation, a consequence of oxygen free radical production, has been found to be elevated in the substantia nigra in Parkinson's disease. (2) Catecholaminergic neurons containing neuromelanin, an autooxidation by-pro

Ultrastructural neuropathology of chronic wasting disease in captive mule deer.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD), a progressive and uniformly fatal neurological disorder, is characterized neuropathologically by intraneuronal vacuolation, spongiform change of the neuropil and astrocytic hyperplasia and hypertrophy. Ultrastructural neuropathological findings consist of (1) extensive vacuolation in neuronal processes, within myelin sheaths, formed by splitting at the major dense lines or within axons; (2) dystrophic neurites (dendrites, axonal preterminals and myelinated axons containing degenerating mitochondria and pleomorphic, electron-dense inclusion bodies); (3) prominent

Decreased release of D-aspartate in the guinea pig spinal cord after lesions of the red nucleus.

This study attempts to determine if fibers that project from the guinea pig red nucleus to the spinal cord use L-glutamate and/or L-aspartate as transmitters. Unilateral injections of kainic acid were placed stereotaxically in the red nucleus to destroy the cells of origin of the rubrospinal tract. Six days after the injection, Nissl-stained sections through the lesion site showed that the majority of neurons in the red nucleus ipsilateral to the kainic acid injection were destroyed. In addition, the lesioned area included parts of the surrounding midbrain reticular formation. Silver-impregnat

Identification of the midbrain locomotor region and its relation to descending locomotor pathways in the Atlantic stingray, Dasyatis sabina.

The midbrain locomotor region (MLR) in the Atlantic stingray, Dasyatis sabina, was identified and characterized. Stimulation (50-100 microA, 60 Hz) of the midbrain in decerebrated, paralyzed animals was used to elicit locomotion monitored as alternating activity in nerves innervating an antagonist pair of elevator and depressor muscles. Effective sites for evoking locomotion in the midbrain included parts of several nuclei: the caudal portion of the interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus and the caudomedial parts of the cuneiform and subcuneiform nuclei. This region did not

Naegleria australiensis ssp. italica: experimental study in mice.

A subspecies of Naegleria australiensis, N. australiensis italica, pathogenic for mice, was recently isolated and identified from an Italian thermal spa. We describe the histopathological changes of the central nervous system with experimental infection of albino mice. The histopathological patterns are intermediate to those seen with infection caused by N. fowleri and N. australiensis or Acanthamoeba spp. An acute inflammatory reaction was present within the choroid plexus, ependyma, midbrain, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. Occasional single amebic trophozoites were found within some microabs

Akinetic mutism and locked-in syndrome: the functional-anatomical basis for their differentiation.

The accurate location and extent of brainstem lesions that cause akinetic mutism (a.m.) and/or locked-in syndrome (LiS) are reviewed. We compared the data of our morphological analysis with recent neurochemical findings and speculated on the possible pathomechanism that results in the clinical state. There seems to be an anatomic correspondence between pathways of dopamine containing neurons and the lesions associated with a.m. We argue that mesocoeruleo, diencephalospinal and/or mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic systems are selectively damaged in a.m. but spared in LiS.

[Identification of nuclei of the pretectal area during stereotaxic surgery for spastic torticollis].

The neurons of mesencephalic nuclear structures were studied by microelectrode techniques for functional identification of the interstitial nucleus of Cajal during 18 stereotaxic operations on patients with torticollis. It is shown that the use of microneuronography for functional identification of structures of the pretectal region and mesencephalic structures bordering it is promising. The functional cellular complexes of these structures which respond selectively to voluntary movements of the eyes and head, rapid voluntary movements of the eyes, fixation and maintenance of the gaze, and com

Paramedian thalamic and midbrain infarct: clinical and neuropathological study.

The clinical and neuropathological findings in 28 cases of paramedian thalamic and midbrain infarcts are reported. The 4 instances of unilateral paramedian thalamic infarct were characterized by mood and behavioral changes, limitation of the infarct to the center of the anatomical paramedian territory, and symmetrical configuration of the paramedian thalamic arteries. Basilar artery occlusion was found in 1 patient. The 5 cases of bilateral paramedian thalamic infarcts were characterized by disturbances of consciousness and behavior, extension of the infarct (to the mammillothalamic tracts in

Brisk and sluggish concentrically organized ganglion cells in the cat's retina.

1. Nine hundred and sixty cat retinal ganglion cells were evaluated with respect to receptive-field organization and latency to antidromic activation of their axons from optic-tract and mid-brain positions.2. The vast majority (92%) had the familiar concentric centre/surround organization. As in earlier work these could be classed as sustained or transient, independently of the centre type. About 13% of the concentric cells were characterized by relatively sluggish responses to conventional visual stimuli which yielded brisk responses from the others. The sluggish cells constituted a previousl

Organization of ventral tegmental area projections to the ventral tegmental area-nigral complex in the rat.

The ventral tegmental area (VTA) is a nodal link in reward circuitry. Based on its striatal output, it has been subdivided in a caudomedial … d varicosities were sometimes found apposed to tyrosine hydroxylase-positive neurons in the ventral mesencephalon. Overall, the results underscore that VTA projections to the VTA-nigral complex are substantial and topically organized. In general, these projections, like the spiralated striato-nigro-striatal loops, display a medial-to-lateral organization. This …
