[Knowledge, practices and attitudes toward volunteer work in an influenza pandemic: cross-sectional study with Peruvian medical students].

INTRODUCTION: Reductions in health personnel during disasters or epidemics such as an influenza pandemic may need to include volunteer students. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to determine knowledge and practices about pandemic influenza and the attitudes towards volunteer work in Peruvian medical students. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analytic study by simple sampling using a survey regarding “"knowledge and practices"” about pandemic influenza and the attitudes to volunteer work. RESULTS: From the group of 865 students who were surveyed, 848 accepted to participate in th

A Web-based approach to blood donor preparation.

BACKGROUND: Written and video approaches to donor education have been shown to enhance donation attitudes and intentions to give blood, particularly when the information provides specific coping suggestions for donation-related concerns. This study extends this work by comparing Web-based approaches to donor preparation among donors and nondonors. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Young adults (62% female; mean [±SD] age, 19.3 [±1.5] years; mean [range] number of prior blood donations, 1.1 [0-26]; 60% nondonors) were randomly assigned to view 1) a study Web site designed to address common blood donor

Abortion training to be required in standard Ob / Gyn curriculum.

On February 15, (1995) the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education announced that it will now require medical schools seeking accreditation to provide abortion training for all residents in obstetrics and gynecology. The new "Program Requirements for Residency Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology," approved unanimously, will take effect on January 1, 1996. According to the Council, the newly issued standards are the first to refer specifically to abortion. The language states, "Experience with induced abortion must be part of residency training, except for residents with moral o

Spatial Heterogeneity of Digital HIV/AIDS Stigma in China: Cross-Sectional Ecological Study.

BACKGROUND: HIV/AIDS stigma remains a major barrier to public health intervention and social inclusion. In China, short-video platforms, such as Douyin, have become important spaces where people living with HIV/AIDS share daily-life narratives and receive public responses. However, little is known about how public responses to these narratives vary geographically, or how regional sociodemographic and epidemiological contexts are associated with digital stigma and support. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the thematic structure, spatial heterogeneity, and macro-level correlates of public

Ethical conflict of advanced practice providers related to drug testing and reporting for maternity patients with opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Advanced practice maternity providers (APPs; midwives, nurse practitioners, physician associates) have described decision-making about drug testing and child welfare system (CWS) reporting as a source of ethical conflict. Ethical conflict in clinical practice is linked to provider burnout and poor patient outcomes. However, ethical conflict related to drug testing and reporting across APPs caring for pregnant and postpartum patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) has not been quantitatively evaluated. PURPOSE: This study describes the amount and types of ethical conflict experienc

Voluntary Assumption of Risk and Rights Negation: Toward a New Libertarian Theory of Abortion.

Libertarian debates on abortion have not advanced beyond the seminal theory of evictionism developed by Walter Block. Indeed, despite being subject to waves of intralibertarian critique, evictionism has managed to remain the leading libertarian theory of abortion. Part of the reason for this lies in the unsatisfactoriness of alternative libertarian accounts of abortion such as the implicit contract framework. This paper moves the libertarian debate on abortion beyond evictionism by proposing a novel assumption-of-risk model which holds that, by engaging in consensual intercourse, a woman volun

Complete Ectogenesis, Parental Love, and Human Flourishing: A Confucian Critique.

Complete ectogenesis (CE), if technologically realized, would portend a radical decoupling of fetal development from the female body, thereby dismantling the biological and cultural nexus between gestation and kinship. This paper argues that a Confucian approach offers a fruitful framework for critically assessing CE, as it appropriately shifts attention from the moral status or isolated interests of individual entities (such as the fetus, women, or parents) to the quality of relationships-especially the parent-child relationship. From this perspective, CE represents not merely a technical inn

"Why can't they put us to sleep if we are suffering?": La Nada and the desire for euthanasia among institutionalized older adults in Peru.

In this article, I examine how institutionalized older adults in Peru articulate suffering through the idiom of la nada-"nothingness"-and how this shapes desires for euthanasia. Moving from close ethnography of bodies in space and time to structural and ethical discourses on euthanasia, I argue that calls for euthanasia arise not only from biomedical suffering or terminal illness, but also from socially produced experiences of relational erosion, confinement, and moral invisibility. Residents' refrain-"no tengo nada"-signals not only material lack but the collapse of reciprocal ties, autonomy,

What is the felt experience of weight stigma in Latin America and the Caribbean? A systematic narrative review.

This systematic narrative review synthesized 46 studies concerning felt weight stigma in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), addressing a gap in global stigma research. Drawing from literature in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, the study applied inductive and deductive approaches to analyze the presence of felt weight stigma and the reasons that "mattered most" in the region. The findings confirmed the relevance of felt weight stigma and its associated profound emotional harm, social exclusion, bullying, moral stereotypes, and family issues, with gendered dimensions. While many patterns m

The Critical Role of Spiritual Care in the Emergency Department.

Patients in the Emergency Department (ED) have a diverse set of spiritual challenges. As part of a clinical initiative to embed palliative care in the ED, our palliative care department looked to provide timely spiritual care (SC) to this population. We worked with three of our chaplains to identify ED-specific spiritual care challenges and benefits. Several themes arose on nuances of SC consults in the ED: quality of consults (less focused on actively dying patients, more upstream support), challenges (physical environment, staff limitations, distractions), benefits (continuity of care, suppo

Conscience: A Brief History.

The lived experience of human moral agency suggests that some actions favour human flourishing while others lead to division and conflict: the universal human desire for happiness is bound up with the effort to discern and do 'good' and to avoid 'evil'. Words exist to convey an experience, and the word 'conscience' has emerged as an attempt to describe the experience of moral discernment. We offer an account of the development of the word 'conscience'. Our treatment is divided into three sections: the first beginning around 600 BCE until the arrival of Christianity; the second will cover the C

In the shadow of HIV: Fear, rumor, and stigma among young women living with HIV in COVID-19 pandemic in Western Kenya.

Drawing on ethnographic research in Dudi village in Western Kenya, this article explores how the lingering legacies of the 1990s HIV/AIDS epidemic shaped local perceptions of, and responses to, the COVID-19 pandemic and related vaccine controversies. Focusing on the lives of young women living with HIV, the article traces how their experiences of navigating HIV care, stigma, and gendered expectations intersected with anxieties around COVID-19 vaccination. These narratives are embedded within a broader historical and social landscape marked by grief, moral judgement, and structural exclusion. P

Staying Together No Matter What: Becoming Young Parents on the Streets of Vancouver.

Among young people who use drugs in the context of entrenched poverty and homelessness, pregnancy is often viewed as an event that can meaningfully change the trajectory of their lives. However, youth's desires and decision-making do not always align with the perspectives of various professionals and systems regarding how best to intervene during pregnancies and early parenting. Drawing on longitudinal interviews and fieldwork with young people in Vancouver, Canada, we explore how their romantic relationships powerfully shaped understandings of what was right and wrong and which actions to tak

Patients' perspectives on the derivation and use of organoids.

Organoid research is enhancing understanding of human development and diseases as well as aiding in medication development and selection, raising hopes for even more future therapeutic options. Nevertheless, this work raises important ethical issues and there is a paucity of data regarding patients' perspectives on them. We report on 60 interviews with adult patients or parents of pediatric patients from diverse disease populations who receive medical care at a major academic research institution in the United States. Interviewees expressed broad support for organoid development and use. Howev

Professional Medical Discourse and the Emergence of Practical Wisdom in Everyday Practices: Analysis of a Keyhole Case.

Recent publications have argued that practical wisdom is increasingly important for medical practices, particularly in complex contexts, to stay focused on giving good care in a moral sense to each individual patient. Our empirical investigation into an ordinary medical practice was aimed at exploring whether the practice would reveal practical wisdom, or, instead, adherence to conventional frames such as guidelines, routines and the dominant professional discourse. We performed a thematic analysis both of the medical files of a complex patient and her daughter's diary. We did find practical w

Search for the Profile of the Victim of Adolescent Dating Violence: An Intersection of Cognitive, Emotional, and Behavioral Variables.

The knowledge of the promoting variables of dating violence has been a topic much studied in the last decade. However, the definition of the profile of this type of victim still presents numerous unknowns that hinder the effectiveness of prevention programs against violence. This study analyzes the interaction of cognitive, emotional and behavioral variables that converge in the victim profile. The sample comprised 2577 adolescents (55.2% girls) of 14 to 18 years in age (M = 15.9, SD = 1.2). The instruments used were the dating violence questionnaire (CUVINO), the scale of detection of sexism

Saving a victim from himself: The rhetoric of the learner's presence and absence in the Milgram experiments.

This paper contests what has remained a core assumption in social psychological and general understandings of the Milgram experiments. Analysing the learner/victim's rhetoric in experimental sessions across five conditions (N = 170), it demonstrates that what participants were exposed to was not the black-and-white scenario of being pushed towards continuation by the experimental authority and pulled towards discontinuation by the learner/victim. Instead, the traditionally posited explicit collision of 'forces' or 'identities' was at all points of the experiments undermined by an implicit coll

Should gratitude be a requirement for access to live organ donation?

Gratitude is both expected and problematic in live organ donation. Are there grounds to require it, and to forbid access to live donor transplantation to a recipient who fails to signal that he feels any form of gratitude? Recipient gratitude is not currently required for organ donation, but it is expected and may be a moral requirement. Despite this, we argue that making it a condition for live organ transplantation would be unjustified. It would constitute a problematic and disproportionate punishment for perceived immoral behaviour on the part of the recipient. It would also bar the donor f

Narrative Identity in Third Party Reproduction: Normative Aspects and Ethical Challenges.

In the last few decades, assisted reproduction has introduced new challenges to the way people conceive and build their families. While the numbers of donor-conceived (DC) individuals have increased worldwide, there are still many controversies concerning access to donor information. Is there a fundamental moral right to know one's genetic background? What does identity in DC families mean? Is there any relationship between identity formation and disclosure of genetic origins? These questions are addressed by analysing core regulatory discourse (ethical recommendations and codes of practice).

Narrative as re-fusion: Making sense and value from sickle cell and thalassaemia trait.

The moral turn within sociology suggests that we need to be attentive to values and have a rapprochement with philosophy. The study of illness narratives is one area of sociology that has consistently addressed itself to moral domains but has tended to focus on stories of living with genetic or chronic illness per se rather than liminal states such as genetic traits. This article takes the case of genetic carriers within racialized minority groups, namely, those with sickle cell or thalassaemia trait, and takes seriously the notion that their narratives are ethical practices. In line with the
