Effect of functional fatigue on vertical ground-reaction force in individuals with flat feet.

CONTEXT: Flat foot is one of the lower extremity deformities that might change kinetic variables of gait. Fatigue is one of the factors that can alter the vertical ground-reaction force (GRF). The effect of a fatiguing condition on vertical GRF has not been documented in individuals with flat feet. OBJECTIVE: To examine the fatigue effect on vertical GRF in individuals with flat feet compared with a normal group during barefoot walking. DESIGN: Repeated-measure ANOVA for the effects of fatigue on individuals with flat feet and normal feet. SETTING: Biomechanics laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: 17

Effects of physical activity and exercise interventions in health-related variables in Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients during clinical treatment: a systematic review and single-arm meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer-related fatigue and reduced health-related quality of life (HRQOL) are common among lymphoma patients undergoing treatment. Exercise may be safe and feasible for individuals with hematological malignancies, with potential benefits in mitigating treatment-related toxicity and enhancing treatment tolerance. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of exercise interventions on health-related outcomes such as HRQOL, muscle strength, cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), fatigue, and body composition in this population. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Electronic

The impact of a truncated competition on the sleep and wellness of sub-elite netballers.

BACKGROUND: Sleep and wellness outcomes have been explored in elite netball athletes, but research examining these outcomes in sub-elite athletes is lacking despite high participation rates at the sub-elite level. The aim was to investigate the impact of the scheduling of games over consecutive days during a truncated four-round netball competition on the sleep and wellness outcomes of sub-elite netballers. METHODS: A total of 12 female, sub-elite netball players were examined via sleep outcomes, stress, fatigue, mood, muscle soreness, and overall wellness on the night before, the night of, a

Respiratory muscle function in the newborn: a narrative review.

Our aim was to summarise the current evidence and methods used to assess respiratory muscle function in the newborn, focusing on current and future potential clinical applications. The respiratory muscles undertake the work of breathing and consist mainly of the diaphragm, which in the newborn is prone to dysfunction due to lower muscle mass, flattened shape and decreased content of fatigue-resistant muscle fibres. Premature infants are prone to diaphragmatic dysfunction due to limited reserves and limited capacity to generate force and avoid fatigue. Methods to assess the respiratory muscles

Protective effect of hypothermia on contractile force in skeletal muscle.

The clinical success of limb replantation and tissue transfer is partly dependent on the duration of ischemia experienced by the amputated part. This study focused primarily on the damage that occurs during this ischemic period. An experimental system was implemented that allowed the observation of contractile function in totally isolated skeletal muscle after ischemia. Contractile function was selected as an indicator of ischemic damage because normal function is the ultimate goal of replantation. All experiments were performed on the rat extensor digitorum longus. The muscles were subjected

Sarcopenia, malnutrition, and fatigue in de Novo Parkinson's disease- support for early rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: Sarcopenia (loss of muscle strength/mass) reduces physical performance (walking, strength, mobility) and is common in Parkinson's disease (PD), but data on newly diagnosed, untreated patients ("de novo") are scarce. Fatigue is frequent in PD and linked to physical decline and malnutrition, key sarcopenia risk factors. We aimed to describe sarcopenia prevalence, malnutrition risk, and fatigue in de novo PD and explore differences based on fatigue presence. METHODS: Participants (n = 49) underwent physical tests [chair stand test (CST), hand grip strength, gait speed, Timed Up and Go

External anal sphincter fatigue is not improved by N-acetylcysteine in an animal model.

Oxidative stress is associated with skeletal muscle fatigue. This study tests the hypotheses that N-acetylcysteine (NAC) reduces fatigue and accelerates recovery of the rat external anal sphincter (EAS). Fifteen female Wistar rats were killed humanely. The EAS was mounted as a ring preparation and electrically stimulated with 50 Hz trains of 200 ms in duration every 4 s for three and a half minutes. Three groups were analysed: a control group (n = 5), a group pretreated with NAC (10(-4) mol L(-1); n = 5) and a group pretreated with NAC (10(-3) mol L(-1); n = 5). A novel fatigue index was formu…

Myoglobinuria and transient acute renal failure in a patient revealing hypothyroidism.

Muscle involvement in hypothyroidism commonly manifests as fatigue, myalgias, stiffness and slowed reflexes. We report a case of transient acute renal failure related to rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuria in a 40 year old man that revealed the diagnosis of hypothyroidism with myopathy. The patient had proximal muscle weakness and tenderness, markedly raised muscle enzymes and deranged renal functions that normalised with thyroid replacement therapy. Hypothyroidism, though rare, should be considered a definite and authentic cause of rhabdomyolysis.

Myosin Light Chain Kinase (MLCK) Gene Influences Exercise Induced Muscle Damage during a Competitive Marathon.

Myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) phosphorylates the regulatory light chain (RLC) of myosin producing increases in force development during skeletal muscle contraction. It has been suggested that MLCK gene polymorphisms might alter RLC phosphorylation thereby decreasing the ability to produce force and to resist strain during voluntary muscle contractions. Thus, the genetic variations in the MLCK gene might predispose some individuals to higher values of muscle damage during exercise, especially during endurance competitions. The aim of this investigation was to determine the influence of MLCK

Different pattern of recovery of fast and slow muscles following nerve injury in the rat.

The sciatic nerve was crushed in 5-6-day-old rats and the time course of recovery and changes in physiological and morphological properties of reinnervated fast and slow muscles was compared. The maximal tetanic tension developed by the reinnervated muscles was recorded at different times from about 18 days of age, when functional recovery was first seen, until 2 months. The maximal indirectly elicited tetanic tension of the reinnervated slow soleus muscle gradually increased from 55% of normal at 18 days to 75% of normal at 2 months. In contrast, the tension of the reinnervated fast muscle ex

Effect of photobiomodulation on fatigue-related errors in ankle joint position reproduction: the moderating role of perceived ankle instability in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

To investigate whether pre-exercise photobiomodulation (PBM) attenuates fatigue-induced decline in ankle joint position reproduction (JPR) and determine whether perceived ankle instability modifies this response. In this randomized, placebo-controlled trial with participant blinding and blinded outcome assessment, 30 healthy young adults (age: 24.3 ± 3.7 years; 15 male, 15 female) received either PBM or placebo treatment applied to the lower-leg musculature before a fatiguing protocol. PBM parameters included a wavelength of 830 nm, average power of 1 W, and total energy of 300 J per limb. Ank

Comparing the effects of Kinesio and dynamic tapes on plantar pressure and postural stability in the pre- and post-fatigue phases: The case of men with pes planus.

BACKGROUND: Pes planus (PP) is a common foot arch disorder. The present research was conducted to compare the effectiveness of Kinesio tape (KT) and dynamic tape (DT) in treating postural fluctuations during the pre-and post-fatigue phases in males with PP. METHODS: In this crossover study, 35 men with PP were recruited. The participants attended intervention sessions on three different days. At the onset of each session, one condition-either a session without taping (WT), KT use, or DT application-was randomly selected. Afterward, plantar pressure and postural fluctuations were recorded befo

Submaximal force-velocity relationships during mountain ultramarathon: Data from the field.

This study presents a novel method for evaluating the submaximal velocity-force (V(F)) relationship in mountain ultramarathon races using crowdsourced data from Strava.com. The dataset includes positional data from 408 participants of the 171-km UTMB® 2023 race (9,850-m D+). The race was divided into 100-m segments. The mean net propulsive force and velocity were computed for each segment to describe the submaximal V(F) relationship as a rational function of three parameters. F1: propulsive force at 1 m · s-1; V0: theoretical maximum velocity on flat terrain; C: curvature parameter (the lower

Sex-specific effects of a repetitive fatiguing task on stability: Analysis with motor equivalence model.

Although studies showed that several internal factors affect task-specific stability, the sex-specific effects of fatigue on whole-limb stability during a semi-cycle repetitive pointing task remain unidentified. Synergy and Motor Equivalence concepts in the UCM framework have been developed to explain task-specific stability. The motor equivalence model quantifies the amount of deviation in the space of elemental variables that occurs in two directions; one that preserves the performance variable (good variance), and the other that affects it (bad variance). Synergy index (the difference betwe

Skeletal muscle regeneration in cancer cachexia.

Muscle wasting is the most important phenotypic and clinical feature of cancer cachexia, and the principal cause of impaired physical function, fatigue, and respiratory complications. Muscle loss has been attributed to a variable combination of reduced nutritional intake and an imbalance between anabolic and catabolic processes. It has been suggested that defective skeletal muscle regeneration may also contribute to muscle wasting in cancer patients. However, there is little in vitro or in vivo data available, in either animals or in humans, regarding skeletal muscle regeneration in cancer was

Late effects of polio: critical review of the literature on neuromuscular function.

Many individuals who have had poliomyelitis are now complaining of several new problems attributed to their former illness including muscle atrophy; fatigue; progressive weakness; and muscle, back, and joint pain. This paper critically examines the literature regarding the neuromuscular effects of poliomyelitis. Weakness resulting from poliomyelitis was due to destruction of anterior horn cells. After the illness, muscle strength was partially recovered as a result of several physiologic adaptive mechanisms including terminal sprouting and reinnervation, myofiber hypertrophy, and, possibly, my
