Pincer nail: aesthetic concept in surgery.

Although pincer nail deformity (PND) treatment is time consuming independent of whether it is based on surgical or conservative procedures, long lasting beneficial results are found only after surgical intervention. Typically destruction of the lateral matrix horns either surgically or by phenol cauterization or even ablation of the matrix is performed. In the past these procedures mainly aimed at relief from pain; however, currently more patients ask for the preservation of the nail unit and a good cosmetic outcome. Today reconstructive results that meet the patient expectations are available

Nail involvement in langerhans cell histiocytosis.

Nail involvement, which is distinctly uncommon in Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), is characterized by various features like longitudinal grooving, purpuric striae, hyperkeratosis, subungual pustules, deformity, loss of nail plate, paronychia, onycholysis, and pitting. Here the authors report the case of a child who presented with isolated nail unit changes due to Langerhans cell histiocytosis before the evolution of systemic features. The authors suggest that LCH should be considered in differential diagnoses of nail changes that are resistant to therapy.

Yellow nail syndrome: treatment with octreotide.

INTRODUCTION: The yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is the triad of 'yellow' nails, peripheral oedema and pleural effusions. For diagnosis, which is clinical, at least two of these findings are necessary. Also typical is a long-standing chronic cough often caused by low-grade bronchiectases. The pleural effusions often require pleurodesis. The pathogenesis is probably a dysfunction of the lymphatic system (1, 2). Octreotide regulates the release of growth hormone and thyrotropin, and also has effects on the gastro-intestinal tract, where it inhibits glandular secretion, neurotransmission, smooth-musc…

Hand dermatitis and nail disorders of the workplace.

Dermatitis and nail bed disorders form a large percentage of occupational conditions that affect the hands. This article briefly discusses some of the more common causes and presentations of these conditions. Most of these of the conditions can occur in the workplace and outside of it, so a careful evaluation is necessary to determine the work relatedness of a given condition.

Tibial lengthening over an intramedullary nail.

BACKGROUND: Long-term application of an external fixator to treat leg-length discrepancy and short stature often causes complications, such as pin-tract infection or loss of range of motion at the knee or ankle (or both). Prolonged fixator use also interferes with the activities of daily living. To minimize such problems, we have combined intramedullary nailing with external fixation. Using this technique, the external fixator can be removed more quickly after completing the lengthening. METHODS: We combined intramedullary nailing with lengthening in 13 tibias (8 patients) and then compared t

Nail biopsy: assessment of indications and outcome.

BACKGROUND: For years, nail biopsy has been shunned as a difficult and scarring procedure, which is seldom required in day-to-day practice. Only a few studies with a limited number of patients have been carried out to assess its utility in dermatology. METHODS: We studied 270 patients with nail disorders (both infectious and noninfectious). In 205 cases, the clinical diagnosis could be confirmed with the help of routine diagnostic aids, in the form of potassium hydroxide preparation, fungal culture, and biopsy of associated skin lesions. In the remaining 65 cases, various types of nail biopsi

Familial median canaliform nail dystrophy.

Median canaliform nail dystrophy typically appears as a central nail groove, beginning at or distal to the proximal nail fold, from which small lateral fissures may be found. Although the onset of this nail dystrophy has occasionally been associated with either prior local trauma or the initiation of treatment with isotretinoin, the etiology of this condition remains elusive for most affected individuals. We describe a man with median canaliform nail dystrophy whose brother and mother had the same nail dystrophy, review the other reported cases, and discuss the differential diagnosis of this n

Nail changes and disorders among the elderly.

Nail disorders are frequent among the geriatric population. This is due in part to the impaired circulation and in particular, susceptibility of the senile nail to fungal infections, faulty biomechanics, neoplasms, concurrent dermatological or systemic diseases, and related treatments. With aging, the rate of growth, color, contour, surface, thickness, chemical composition and histology of the nail unit change. Age associated disorders include brittle nails, trachyonychia, onychauxis, pachyonychia, onychogryphosis, onychophosis, onychoclavus, onychocryptosis, onycholysis, infections, infestati…

Nail infestation by Liposcelis bostrychophila Badonnel.

We report an unusual case of nail infestation by Liposcelis bostrychophila Badonnel in a 70-year-old woman with onychomycosis. Liposcelis spp., also known as booklouse, are tiny insects that feed on fungi, lichen and decaying materials. In this case, the loosened hyperkeratotic nail provided a favourable environment for these insects. This is the second report of human infestation by Liposcelis spp.

Nail fragility syndrome and its treatment.

For reasons of clarity, definitions are offered for strength, hardness, flexibility, brittleness and toughness of the nails. Six clinical types of nail fragility are delineated: longitudinal furrows and splitting (onychorrhexis), single longitudinal splitting, multiple crenellated splitting, lamellar splitting (onychoschizia), transverse splitting and nail friability. Changes may be observed in the keratin structure of fragile nails. Nail brittleness is usually 'environmental' in origin, but sometimes may be part of a nail dystrophy. Household daily chores are particularly damaging. Among the …
