Epithelioid Trophoblastic Tumor Presenting as an Adnexal Mass: Report of a Diagnostically Challenging Case.

Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT) is a rare neoplasm derived from chorionic intermediate trophoblast cells, representing less than 2% of all gestational trophoblastic neoplasms. Classically, ETT presents as a uterine mass in women of reproductive age following a term pregnancy. The time from pregnancy to tumor development varies from months to several years. ETT most often arises in the endometrium, followed by the cervix. Extrauterine ETT are extremely infrequent, with few cases reported in the literature. We report a case of a 41-year-old woman, with history of three term pregnancies who

Photodynamic therapy for keratoacanthoma on the upper lip.

BACKGROUND: Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a cutaneous neoplasm, which is similar to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) clinically, cytologically, and histopathologically. Surgical resection is the first choice for treating KA, but it may be impractical when a KA is located in a cosmetically sensitive area. OBSERVATION: We describe a patient with a nodule on the right upper lip. We performed a surgical biopsy to obtain a histopathological diagnosis. Specimen analysis revealed a diagnosis of KA. As the tumor was located in the upper lip, a direct resection may require a flap to reconstruct the lip shape;

Are actinic keratoses really squamous cell cancer? How do we know if they would become malignant?

Actinic keratosis (AK) is a very common skin disease caused by chronic sun exposure. AKs have historically been characterized as being "precancerous" or "premalignant." It is true that these lesions do not possess metastatic potential, because they are confined to the epidermis, but it is not accurate to deem them "premalignant." AK qualifies as a malignant neoplasm, because it also fulfills criteria for malignancy in classic pathology, namely, the capability, or potential, to kill by either destruction of tissue locally or by metastasis widely. In this context, AK is considered now by many a

Carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland consisting of high-grade salivary duct carcinoma and keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma.

Carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) is a rare salivary gland malignancy that presents diagnostic difficulties partly because of its wide range of histologic presentations. We report a case of a 77-year-old man, who presented with a 6-year history of a parotid mass that had undergone rapid growth within weeks. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an infiltrative mass in the parotid gland, and the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy result was highly suspicious for carcinoma. Subsequent excision of the tumor demonstrated a poorly differentiated epithelial neoplasm consisting of keratinizing s

[Myofibroblastic sarcoma of the larynx : a case report and review].

BACKGROUND: Myofibroblastic sarcomas or myofibrosarcoma, are extremely rare malignant neoplasms of myofibroblasts. They are characterized by the pattern of cells and special immunohistochemical markers such as vimentin, desmin and alpha-smooth-muscle actin. PATIENT AND METHOD: The case of a patient with a history of frequently relapsing papillomas of the larynx is reported. Chronic laryngitis with focal low-grade dysplasia of the squamous epithelium was diagnosed approximately 1 year after the first treatment of the papillomas. After approximately 2 years the pathologist diagnosed the rare my

X-linked agammaglobulinaemia and squamous lung cancer.

A 32yr-old nonsmoking male, diagnosed as having X-linked agamma-globulinemia, presented with fever, cough with purulent sputum, a very intense back pain and a mass of 10 centimetres in lower left lobe. Diagnostic evaluation revealed a squamous cell carcinoma with very aggressive metastases at L3. Malignancies are the second leading cause of death in children and adults with congenital immunodeficiency disorders, mostly non-Hodgkin lymphomas and gastric and colon adenocarcinomas, but this is the first report of lung cancer in a patient with X-linked agammaglobulinemia. Lung cancer incidence has

Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin associated with sarcoid reactions in the regional lymph nodes.

Sarcoid reactions in lymph nodes with or without metastasis from a primary malignant neoplasm are well-known. However, it is extremely rare to find these reactions associated with cutaneous solid tumors; only one such case has appeared in the literature. Here we describe a case of an 83-year-old man with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma accompanied by sarcoid reactions and metastatic foci in the regional lymph nodes. The possibilities of systemic sarcoidosis and tuberculosis were excluded after extensive examinations specific for these diseases. Some authors regard the sarcoid reaction to be

Spindle cell (sarcomatoid) squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus: A case report and a review of the literature.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a significant global health issue, and spindle cell squamous cell carcinoma (SpCC) is a rare variant accounting for up to 2% of cases. SpCC is characterized by a biphasic histological pattern comprising both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. Patients typically present with dysphagia, painful swallowing, and weight loss. Diagnosis is challenging due to sampling limitations in biopsy specimens, often leading to misclassification as conventional SCC or sarcoma. In this case, a white American 65-year-old male presented with worsening dysphagia an

Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor: clinicopathological features with an emphasis on uterine cervical involvement.

We report on the clinical and histological features of five cases of epithelioid trophoblastic tumor, with an emphasis on its involvement of the uterine cervix. All five patients were of reproductive age (median age 38.4 years) and all, except one, presented with vaginal bleeding 3 to 18 years after the most recent pregnancy. One patient presented with amenorrhea. Elevation of serum human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) was seen in four cases. Pathologically, the tumor involved endocervix in three cases and involved uterine corpus in another two. All five tumors were invasive, nodular lesions con

Stratified mucin-producing intraepithelial lesion with invasive carcinoma: 12 cases with immunohistochemical and ultrastructural findings.

Stratified mucin-producing intraepithelial lesion (SMILE) is considered to be a variant of adenocarcinoma in situ (defined as intraepithelial malignant glandular epithelium without invasion) or adenosquamous carcinoma in situ of the uterine cervix. However, recent study suggested that SMILE is more similar to high-grade squamous epithelial lesion by their immunohistochemical findings. An invasive form of SMILE "invasive stratified mucin-producing carcinoma (ISMC)" has been also proposed, but immunohistochemical features are not well documented. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the immuno

Extranodal lymphoma of the tongue, a very rare entity-report of two cases with literature review.

BACKGROUND: Lymphomas are malignant neoplasms of the lymphocyte cell lines affecting the lymph nodes, spleen and other nonhemopoietic tissues. Of the extranodal lymphomas found in the head and neck region, 3-5% of malignant lymphomas arise in the oral and paraoral region, mainly from Waldeyer's ring. The involvement of the base of the tongue is extremely rare. SUMMARISED CASE: Case 1: 64 year old female who presented initially with an enlarged occipital lymph node which gradually became generalized cervical lymphadenopathy with initial histology confirmed reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. A Meta-Analysis on the Impact of Induction Chemotherapy on Survival Outcomes for Sinonasal Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Malignant neoplasms of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are an aggressive form of tumour that tends to be diagnosed at a locoregionally advanced stage. Among its various histological subtypes, squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) are the most common form of sinonasal cancer, with approximately 50%-60% of sinonasal malignancies being SCC. This review aims to investigate the impact of induction chemotherapy on survival outcomes for patients undergoing cancer care for sinonasal squamous cell carcinomas (SNSCC). METHODS: Two reviewers independently assessed 2,118 studie

[Update on the pathologic features of penile cancer].

Penile squamous cell carcinoma (SSC) accounts for almost 10% of male cancers in high-incidence areas, although the incidence in Europe is below 1%. About half of penile SCCs arise from a precancerous high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) caused by a transforming infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), most often high-risk HPV16. The HPV E6/E7 oncoproteins bind to proteins of the p53 and retinoblastoma pathways. This cell cycle disruption results in cellular accumulation/overexpression of p16, which serves as surrogate biomarker for HPV-associated carcinogenesis. The majority of

Association of Site and Recurrence in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patients Visiting Private Hospital in Chennai: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignant neoplasms of the oral cavity. Tongue, buccal mucosa, and gingivobuccal sulcus are the most commonly involved sites for the local recurrence of OSCC. The site of the tumor can be a critical parameter in relation to the recurrence of OSCC because of the varied action of tumor cells in different tumor macro and microenvironments. Hence, the current study aims to evaluate the correlation between the site and recurrence of OSCC among patients visiting private oral cancer hospitals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Details of n=300

Warty-basaloid carcinoma: clinicopathological features of a distinctive penile neoplasm. Report of 45 cases.

Most penile cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, but there are several subtypes with different clinicopathologic, viral, and outcome features. We are presenting 45 cases of a distinctive morphological variant of penile squamous cell carcinoma composed of mixed features of warty and basaloid carcinomas. This tumor was earlier recognized in a recent viral study and showed a high association with human papillomavirus infection. However, clinicopathologic features are not well known. In this multi-institutional study, patients' mean age was 62 years. Most tumors (64%) invaded multiple anatomical

Chromosome abnormalities in oral squamous cell carcinomas.

Strong evidence in favour of the somatic mutation theory of cancer, which states that genomic rearrangements are early and essential events in tumour development, has during the past two decades been obtained from both cytogenetic and molecular genetic studies of neoplastic cells. More than 14,000 neoplasms with acquired clonal chromosome aberrations have been reported; the majority have, however, been haematological malignancies, whereas still little is known about the karyology of the quantitatively more important carcinomas. For oral squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), which constitute a substa

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa skin displays a chronic growth-activated immunophenotype. Implications for carcinogenesis.

Epidermolysis bullosa represents a grouping of inherited skin diseases characterized by epidermal fragility and frequently wounded skin. The recessive dystrophic subtype of epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is characterized by extensive dermal scarring after healing of repeated epidermal injuries and by an unusually high incidence of squamous cell carcinoma occurring in chronically wounded skin. In contrast, the simplex form of epidermolysis bullosa usually heals without scarring and does not predispose to malignant neoplasms of the skin. The differences in scarring and the neoplastic potential of

Microsecretory adenocarcinoma of the external ear canal.

Microsecretory adenocarcinoma (MSA) is a recently described salivary gland tumor characterized by unique histomorphologic and immunohistochemical features as well as recurrent MEF2C::SS18 gene fusion. Since 2019, 24 cases have been reported in the literature, primarily arising in the oral cavity, with a single reported case arising in the parotid gland. Here, we present a case of MSA that arose in the external ear canal in an 89-year-old woman and was discovered during management of vertigo symptoms. Excisional biopsy of the lesion showed multiple fragments of squamous epithelium with hyperpla

Immunohistochemical expression of MMP-9 and VEGF in squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue.

Squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) account for approximately 95% of all oral malignant neoplasms and for about 38% of all malignant head and neck tumors, especially affecting the tongue and lips. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of MMP-9 and VEGF in oral SCC according to the occurrence of metastasis. Eighteen cases of tongue SCC without metastases and 17 cases of tongue SCC with metastases were subjected to immunohistochemical methods. High immunohistochemical expression of MMP-9 and VEGF by neoplastic cells and stroma was observed in tongue SCCs at the inv

Imiquimod for restoring local immunity in a renal transplant patient with persistent keratoacanthoma.

Keratoacanthoma (KA), a cutaneous neoplasm histologically resembling squamous cell carcinoma, is characterized by rapid growth and common spontaneous regression. The regression depends on an individual's immune response. We are reporting a case of a 53-year-old man who presented with an ulcerated tumor, which had arisen as a nodular lesion 9 months earlier. This was localized on the the left thumb. The patient had undergone a kidney transplant after severe glomerulonephritis.
