Nurse and Patient Outcomes in Private and Public Hospitals in South Africa During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Nurse and patient outcomes in South Africa were poor before COVID-19 and are believed to have worsened during and after the pandemic. Limited evidence exists on modifiable organisational factors contributing to these outcomes hindering targeted interventions. PURPOSE: This paper aims to develop a better understanding of potentially modifiable organisational factors of hospitals that, if addressed, would likely contribute to improving nurse wellbeing and retention, and quality and safety of patient care. METHODS: Data were collected from 143 private and public hospitals (n = 4298

Perinatal litigation and related nursing issues.

Obstetric and neonatal nurses are expected to provide an abundance of guidance, support, monitoring, and education to women and their babies during and after delivery. Nurses should adhere to standards of professional nursing practice. This will ensure that optimal and safe care is provided for the mother and fetus or neonate. Perinatal nurses are vulnerable to litigation should complications occur. Perinatal nurses are responsible for providing routine assessments as well as initiating and performing emergency interventions. This includes recognition of the symptoms of complications in the mo

Using evidence-based educational strategies to increase knowledge and skills in tobacco cessation.

To meet the demand for improved patient outcomes and accountability for healthcare delivery, nurses must embrace a culture of evidence-based practice (EBP). Integrating EBP for tobacco cessation in nursing practice is particularly important for the 44.5 million smokers in the United States who contribute to 157 billion dollars of healthcare costs annually. Unfortunately, studies reveal that healthcare providers are not aware of what is considered the best evidence, the United States Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence, resulting in missed oppo

An Environmental Scan of the Role of Nurses in Preventing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders.

Nurses are in an ideal position to talk to their patients of reproductive age about alcohol use and encourage the prevention of alcohol-exposed pregnancies. Effective conversations can be efficiently included in the clinical encounter to identify alcohol misuse and offer appropriate follow-up. This report presents results of an environmental scan of resources relevant to nursing professionals and nurses' role in addressing alcohol misuse. Gaps in nursing education and practice guidelines with regard to defining the nursing role in preventing alcohol-exposed pregnancies were revealed. Findings

When nurses' vulnerability challenges their moral integrity: A discursive paper.

BACKGROUND: Both vulnerability and integrity represent action-guiding concepts in nursing practice. However, they are primarily discussed regarding patients-not nurses-and considered independently from rather than in relation to each other. AIM: The aim of this paper is to characterize the moral dimension of nurses' vulnerability and integrity, specify the concepts' relationship in nurses' clinical practice and, ultimately, allow a more fine-grained understanding. DESIGN: This discursive paper demonstrates how vulnerability and integrity relate to each other in nursing practice and carves ou

Transitioning from heparin to saline locks for central venous access devices in oncology: An evidence-based practice approach.

Central vascular access devices (CVADs) are often essential to the care of patients undergoing long-term cancer treatment. CVAD maintenance is an essential oncology nurse competency. Evidence-based practice (EBP) in flushing and locking help to prevent intraluminal occlusion, a common complication. Heparinized saline (HS) has been the standard locking solution for CVADs. However, research indicates no superiority of HS over normal saline (NS). The objectives of this EBP project were 1) to evaluate whether a significant difference in intraluminal occlusion was associated with the change from HS

Win-win-win: collaboration advances critical care practice.

Against a background of increasing interest in education post registration, New Zealand nurses are working to advance their professional practice. Because the acquisition of highly developed clinical capabilities requires a combination of nursing experience and education, collaboration between clinicians and nurse educators is essential. However, the accessibility of relevant educational opportunities has been an ongoing issue for nurses outside the country's main centres. Within the framework of a Master of Health Science, the postgraduate certificate (critical care nursing) developed between

A comparative study on nursing students' attitudes towards death and palliative care before and after their clinical internship in China.

BACKGROUND: Nurses play a central role in delivering palliative care (PC), and their attitudes toward death directly affect the quality of care provided. Clinical internships represent a critical transition for nursing students, bridging theoretical knowledge and practical experience, and shaping their development as professional caregivers. However, research in this area remains limited. This study aims to understand the changes in attitudes towards death and PC among nursing undergraduate students before and after clinical internships in China. METHODS: A longitudinal survey was conducted w
