Enteral Tube Nutrition in Anorexia Nervosa and Atypical Anorexia Nervosa and Outcomes: A Systematic Scoping Review.

Background: Anorexia nervosa and atypical anorexia nervosa require refeeding as a core part of their treatment, and enteral tube nutrition (ETN) may be needed in some individuals either to supplement or replace oral nutrition. This scoping review aimed to explore outcomes associated with phases of ETN, including initial nutrition, transition from enteral nutrition to oral intake, and to overall nutrition; Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for scoping reviews checklist was used. A systematic search was performed using the Ovid and the Web

Participant Experience in a Study of Dietary Counselling plus Omega-3 Supplementation for the Treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorder among Women: A Focus Group Study.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Nutrition is an important determinant of health among people with mental disorders; however, barriers to dietary counselling exist. The Eating and Supplementation for Generalized Anxiety Disorder study ("EASe-GAD") was the first trial to assess the impact of these interventions on anxiety symptoms. The primary objective of the present companion qualitative study was to gather and analyze qualitative data about the acceptability, participant experience, impact, barriers and facilitators, strengths, and weaknesses of the EASe-GAD program while also identifying opport

Persistent left superior vena cava discovered during central line insertion in a patient with Joubert syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Persistent left superior vena cava is the most common thoracic venous anomaly. It is usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally during diagnostic or therapeutic interventions. It can complicate central line insertion, causing arrythmias and thromboembolic complications. Joubert syndrome and related disorders are a group of rare congenital disorders associated with developmental abnormalities and multiple organ system involvement including renal, hepatic, and neurological manifestations. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 12-year-old Kuwaiti Arab male child with Joubert

Joint ESPGHAN/NASPGHAN Guidelines on Childhood Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders Beyond Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

INTRODUCTION: Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders beyond eosinophilic esophagitis (non-EoE EGIDs) are rare chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms and histologic findings of eosinophilic inflammation after exclusion of a secondary cause or systemic disease. Currently, no guidelines exist for the evaluation of non-EoE EGIDs. Therefore, the European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) and the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) form

Urinary metabolic profile of phenylketonuria in patients receiving total parenteral nutrition and medication.

Nutrition and drugs are main environmental factors that affect metabolism. We performed metabolomics of urine from an 8-year-old patient (case 1) with epilepsy and an 11-year-old patient (case 2) with malignant lymphoma who was being treated with methotrexate. Both patients were receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN). We used our diagnostic procedure consisting of urease pretreatment, partial adoption of stable isotope dilution, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) measurement and target analysis for 200 analytes including organic acids and amino acids. Surprisingly, their metaboli

Are deficits of arachidonic and docosahexaenoic acids responsible for the neural and vascular complications of preterm babies?

We review evidence suggesting that pre- or postnatal deficits of arachidonic acid (AA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) together with underdeveloped antioxidant protection contribute to neurovisual developmental disorders and other complications of premature birth. These two synergistic deficits occur at a time when 70% of energy is focused on brain development and when the brain and blood vessels are growing at high speed. The types of essential fatty acids fed to preterm babies bear no relation to what the infant would have received had it remained a fetus. This failure to meet essential fatty

[Breast cancer survivor program: follow-up, rehabilitation, psycho-oncology, palliative care].

This recommendation based on recent international guidelines, literature data and our experience deals with the follow-up, complex rehabilitation, palliative and nutritional therapy of breast cancer patients. Practising intensive follow-up is not justified but early detection and curative management of local/regional tumor relapse is still a priority, while special issues (breast cancer risk, pregnancy) must be handled with expertise. Social rehabilitation should be advised by competent social workers. Various diagnostic and therapeutic methods used for physical rehabilitation all along the ma

Dietary fat and the prevention of chronic disease.

Chronic diseases are generally taken to include obesity (especially abdominal), diabetes, macrovascular disease (MVD), affecting all medium distributing arteries and the organs they supply, osteoporosis, and various cancers (notably breast, lung, colorectal, pancreatic, prostate and skin) and dementia. Unfortunately, they may not be so chronic, as their consequences for morbidity and mortality may occur early in adult life and proceed rapidly. Since they all, in one way or another, have food, nutritional and other environmental and lifestyle contributions, the term Eco-Nutritional disease may

Nutritional status and metabolic alterations in patients with ataxia-telangiectasia.

BACKGROUND: Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is a DNA repair disorder characterized by progressive degeneration, immunodeficiency, cancer predisposition, malnutrition, metabolic disorders, and chronic liver disease. The study aims to describe the nutritional status and plasma levels of biomarkers of lipid status, metabolic profile, and liver function of patients with A-T. RESULTS: A total of 218 patients from 9 Latin American countries were included in the study. The distribution of patients according to nutritional status by age group revealed an over-time increase in the proportion of patients w

A Clinical Practice Update for the Management of Patients With Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction and Altered Food Intake Behavior.

BACKGROUND: Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI) impact as many as one in three individuals at some stage of their lives. Clinically, patients with DGBI may present with meal-related symptoms that progressively lead to altered food intake behaviors, resulting in subsequent weight loss and nutritional deficiencies. These patients often experience psychological distress and multi-system co-morbidities. This distinct subgroup can be referred to as DGBI-induced altered food intake behavior (DGBI-AFIB) and needs to be differentiated from the eating disorder defined in the Diagnostic and Statis

Orthorexia nervosa vs. healthy orthorexia: relationships with disordered eating, eating behavior, and healthy lifestyle choices.

BACKGROUND: Orthorexia nervosa (OrNe) is a pattern of disordered eating behavior characterized by excessive preoccupation with overvalued ideas about healthy eating. Healthy orthorexia (HeOr) refers to a non-pathological interest in healthy eating and nutrition. Despite converging evidence that OrNe is correlated with measures of psychopathology and personality traits, there is relatively little empirical data relating OrNe and HeOr to eating and health-promoting behavior. METHODS: Aim 1: exploratory structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the factor structure of an English-language

Dual burden of individual malnutrition in children 1-4 years: Findings from the Colombian nutritional health survey ENSIN 2015.

BACKGROUND: To date there are no studies with estimation of multiple types of double burden of individual malnutrition (DBIM) and evaluation of associated determinants. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence and social determinants associated with the double burden of individual malnutrition in children aged 1-4 years. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from Colombian nutritional heath survey ENSIN 2015. Global DBIM was analysed on the basis of excess weight and the presence of one or more micronutrient deficiencies (vitamin A, D, zinc, or iron) and/or stunting. Specifi

Pediatric feeding disorders.

Pediatric feeding disorders are common: 25% of children are reported to present with some form of feeding disorder. This number increases to 80% in developmentally delayed children. Consequences of feeding disorders can be severe, including growth failure, susceptibility to chronic illness, and even death. Feeding disorders occur in children who are healthy, who have gastrointestinal disorders, and in those with special needs. Most feeding disorders have underlying organic causes. However, overwhelming evidence indicates that abnormal feeding patterns are not solely due to organic impairment.

Malnutrition, gastroenteritis and trypsinogen concentration in hospitalised Aboriginal children.

OBJECTIVE: To explore relationships between malnutrition and pancreatic damage in hospitalised aboriginal children. METHODS: Immunoreactive trypsinogen (IRT) concentrations were measured in two populations of hospitalised aboriginal children in Australia: 472 children aged 0-3 years, in Alice Springs (Northern Territory); and 187 children aged 0-16 years in Mount Isa (Queensland). Correlation of whole blood IRT with height and weight z-scores, four-site skinfold thickness and upper arm circumference was sought. RESULTS: In Mount Isa, the geometric mean IRT concentration rose with decreasing

A national survey of patients with intestinal motility disorders who are potential candidates for intestinal transplantation in Japan.

Intestinal motility disorders are a major cause of intestinal failure. Severe cases such as idiopathic pseudo-obstruction represent life-threatening illnessed. Intestinal transplantation is a treatment for severe motility disorders with irreversible intestinal failure. However, the prevalence of severe motility disorders is unknown. We performed a national survey to identify patients with intestinal motility disorders who require an intestinal transplant. The national survey of 302 institutions treating intestinal motility disorders identified 147 patients treated from 2006 to 2011 at 46 insti

[Food addiction].

Food addiction is a common term used in everyday language by obese patients. Although the neurobiological evidence points to some similarities between addictive mechanisms and the consumption of certain foods, this diagnosis is not yet officially recognized. After a brief history of food addiction compared to other eating disorders, we review the neurobiological processes underlying this concept. A food addiction assessment tool is presented and discussed with the current literature and new classifications of the DSM-5. The concept of food addiction needs to be rethought and requires further r
