Many countries have reported increase of TB incidence during the COVID-19 pandemic period, which demands dire attention as it may threaten global effort to end TB transmission. Services, are among many others, were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic during the years 2020 and 2021; but its impact on the TB transmission is not well understood. This retrospective population-based molecular and epidemiological cohort study aims to determine the pattern of TB transmission in Kuala Lumpur (an area with high population density, moderate TB burden and high rates of COVID-19 cases) for the cohort of Pu

BACKGROUND: There is sufficient epidemiological and biological evidence of increased human susceptibility to viral pathogens such as Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, respiratory syncytial virus, human metapneumovirus and influenza virus, in cold weather. The pattern of outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in China during the flu season is further proof that meteorological conditions may potentially influence the susceptibility of human populations to coronaviruses, a situation that may become increasingly evident as the current global pandemic of COVID-19 unfolds.

BACKGROUND: The recent emergence of zoonotic diseases such as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) have contributed to dominant Global Health narratives around health securitisation and pandemic preparedness, calling for greater co-operation between the health, veterinary and environmental sectors in the ever-evolving One Health movement. A decade later, One Health advocates face increasing pressure to translate the approach from theory into action.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 antigen-based rapid diagnostic tests (Ag-RDTs) for self-testing (C19ST) have been widely implemented. However, evidence on population health and implementation outcomes remains limited. We systematically evaluated population health and implementation outcomes of C19ST to inform WHO guidelines and pandemic preparedness.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO CRD42022299977), searching Embase, MEDLINE, Web of Science, MedRxiv, clinicaltrials.gov and the Cochrane Library from Dec 1, 2020, to Oct 1, 2025. We included cohort, case-control, cross-…

Risk factors at different stages of COVID-19 may interact with each other, forming a risk network. Identifying the key risk factors within this network and their interrelationships is crucial for reducing the overall risk of COVID-19. We constructed three Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) models by combining data-driven approaches with expert validation. Using the Tree-Augmented Naive Bayes (TAN) algorithm, we developed the INFORM COVID-19 Risk BBN model and the COVID-19 Regional Safety Assessment BBN model. The joint BBN model was established using the Greedy Thick Thinning (GTT) algorithm. Param

The rise of new viral illnesses poses a substantial risk to global public health, as their incidence and impact have increased over the past few decades. This article thoroughly examines the complex connection between environmental degradation and the development of new viral diseases. Human activities, such as deforestation, urbanization, and industrial agriculture, have significantly altered ecosystems, increasing the likelihood of virus transmission from animals to humans. The alteration of natural environments brings wildlife species that serve as hosts for several viruses into closer prox

Increased human-animal interfaces impose threats on human life by creating scope for the emergence and resurgence of many infectious diseases. Over the last two decades, emergence of novel viral diseases such as SARS, influenza A/H1N1(09) pdm; MERS; Nipah virus disease; Ebola haemorrhagic fever and the current COVID-19 has resulted in massive outbreaks, epidemics and pandemics thereby causing profound losses of human life, health and economy. The current COVID-19 pandemic has affected more than 200 countries, reporting a global case load of 167,878,000 with 2 per cent mortality as on May 26, 2

Influenza A virus (IAV) has its natural reservoir in wild waterfowl, and emerging human IAVs often contain gene segments from avian viruses. The active drug metabolite of oseltamivir (oseltamivir carboxylate [OC]), stockpiled as Tamiflu for influenza pandemic preparedness, is not removed by conventional sewage treatment and has been detected in river water. There, it may exert evolutionary pressure on avian IAV in waterfowl, resulting in the development of resistant viral variants. A resistant avian IAV can circulate among wild birds only if resistance does not restrict viral fitness and if th…

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) offers a unique, scalable method to monitor disease burden at a community level by capturing all individuals within a sewershed. While emerging evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 may influence the human gut microbiota, which is essential for health and disease outcomes, most microbiome studies remain limited to the individual scale. Given wastewater's sensitivity to fluctuations in human fecal composition, we propose leveraging WBE as a cost-effective tool to characterize longitudinal microbial shifts in community-level gut microbiota throughout the COVID-19

BACKGROUND: Influenza poses a major public health challenge in South-East Asia Region (SEAR). To address the challenge, there is a need to generate contextual evidence that could inform policy makers and program managers for response preparedness and impact mitigation. The World Health Organization has identified priority areas across five streams for research evidence generation at a global level (WHO Public Health Research Agenda). Stream 1 focuses on research for reducing the risk of emergence, Stream 2 on limiting the spread, Stream 3 on minimizing the impact, Stream 4 on optimizing the tr
