Serum levels of calcium and parathyroid hormone after subtotal thyroid resection for Graves' disease.

The following serum constituents were measured in 19 patients operated on for Graves' disease: calcium, protein, parathyroid hormone (PTH), alkaline phosphatase, thyroxine, triiodothyronine, free thyroxine index, and thyroid-stimulating hormone. Blood was sampled systematically on the day before and 5 days, 1 month, 2, 3, 4 and 6 months after operation. All patients were pretreated with antithyroid drugs, and 2 months before surgery levothyroxine was added. The study showed that the thyroid function was impaired for 3 months postoperatively. Serum calcium level was lowered in the same period. …

Reversible resistance to the renal action of parathyroid hormone in human vitamin D deficiency.

1. The response to exogenous parathyroid hormone (PTH) was tested in normal subjects and patients with osteomalacia due to vitamin D deficiency; 200 MRC units of bovine PTH were administered intravenously. 2. The rise in plasma adenosine 3':5'-cyclic monophosphate (cyclic AMP) and the increase in urinary excretion of cyclic AMP were reduced in the patients with vitamin D deficiency. After treatment with vitamin D the responses returned to normal. 3. It is suggested that this reversible resistance is due to the secondary hyperparathyroidism associated with vitamin D deficiency.

Prolactin and calcitonin responses to parathyroid hormone infusion in hypoparathyroid, pseudohypoparathyroid, and normal subjects.

Since parathyroid hormone (PTH) has been reported to release PRL in normal humans, we studied the effects of exogenous PTH infusion (150 U) on the secretion of PRL, TSH, and calcitonin in 10 normal subjects, 5 with hypoparathyroidism, and 10 with pseudohypoparathyroidism, type I (PHP). PTH produced a rise in serum PRL in the normal subjects from 5.1 +/- 0.8 ng/ml (SE) to 14.9 +/- 3.0 ng/ml (P less than 0.01), while levels similarly rose from 4.0 +/- 0.2 to 8.5 +/- 0.8 ng/ml (P less than 0.01) in the patients with hypoparathyroidism. In 6 PHP patients with deficient PRL responses to TRH, the PR…

Effect of parathyroid hormone on renal calcium and magnesium reabsorption in magnesium deficient rats.

Tubular magnesium reabsorption was investigated by recollection micropuncture and in vivo microperfusion techniques in acutely thyroparathyr … MgCl2 further depressed loop magnesium reabsorption independent of intraluminal magnesium delivery. Parathyroid hormone did not alter magnesium transport capacity in magnesium deficient rats but resulted in enhanced transport in acutely hypermagnesemic deficient rats. Calcium reabsorption followed a similar qualitative pattern as magnesium with respect to loop functi …

Plasma levels of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone in relation to starvation hypocalcaemia in dairy cows.

The hypocalcaemia caused by parturition and onset of lactation in high-production dairy cows was mimicked by subjecting cows to starvation periods before and after partus. The changes in plasma calcium, phosphate and magnesium were followed and compared with immunoreactive parathyroid hormone (iPTH) in 2 cows. During the starvation periods before partus, the cows developed hypocalcaemia with no or only small changes in the plasma concentration of magnesium. After the onset of hypocalcaemia, the concentration of iPTH increased on the average 3–4-fold and the raised hormone levels lasted about 2…

Plasma cyclic-AMP response to parathyroid hormone in Turner's syndrome and Albright's hereditary osteodystrophy.

Purified bovine parathyroid hormone (BPTH) given by injection to five patients with Turner's syndrome, and seven healthy volunteers produced a significant rise in plasma cyclic AMP reacing a maximum within 10 min. In a pseudohypoparathyroid patient there was no increase. Urinary excretion of cyclic AMP exceeded the normal in three out of four patients with Turner's syndrome. Thus, if there is a relationship between Turner's syndrome and Albright's osteodystrophy it is with the incomplete form known as pseudo-pseudohypoparathyroidism.

Ectopic parathyroid hormone syndrome. Occurrence in a case undifferentiated lymphoma with bone marrow involvement.

A patient with hypercalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and an undifferentiated lymphoma involving only the bone marrow was treated by us. The finding of an elevated serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) level in the presence of normal parathyroid glands and increased metabolic bone activity on bone biopsy suggests an ectopic PTH syndrome. To our knowledge, no previous case of ectopic PTH syndrome associated with a lymphoma with bone marrow involvement only has been reported.

Parathyroid hormone secretion in vivo. Demonstration of a calcium-independent nonsuppressible component of secretion.

The response of normal bovine parathyroid glands to hypercalcemia was assessed in vivo by radioimmunoassay of immunoreactive parathyroid hormone concentrations in parathyroid effluent blood obtained by surgical cannulation of both anesthetized and nonanesthetized calves. Hypercalcemia was induced for periods of 0.3-35 h by intravenous infusion of a solution of calcium chloride. Assessment of immunoreactivity in effluent and peripheral blood included measurements of selected samples by use of a radioimmunoassay specific for a site residing in the biologically active portion of the hormone molec…

Serum immunoreactive parathyroid hormone and 25-hydroxyvitamin D in patients with uremic bone diseases.

Bone histologic parameters and serum iPTH and 25-OHD were measured in 20 patients with end-stage renal failure treated with hemodialysis. By bone histologic criteria, the patients were divided into three groups: mild, osteomalacic, and fibrotic. The increase in serum iPTH was much greater in the fibrotic group than in the mild or osteomalacic groups. In the uremic patients as a group, there were significant correlations between serum iPTH and both percent marrow fibrosis and percent resorbing surface. In the mild and fibrotic groups together, serum iPTH was also correlated with percent forming

Effects of parathyroid hormone on plasma and urinary adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate in man.

The effects of parathyroid hormone (PTH) on plasma and urinary adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) levels were studied in normal subjects. Under basal conditions normal adults have plasma concentrations of cyclic AMP ranging from 10 to 25 nmoles/liter and excrete from 1.5 to 5 mumoles of cyclic AMP per g of urinary creatinine. About one-half to two-thirds of the cyclic AMP excreted in the urine is derived from the plasma by glomerular filtration, and the remainder is produced by the kidney. Renal production of cyclic AMP is partly under the control of PTH. It can be suppressed by infusi…

A Novel Technology for Localization of Parathyroid Adenoma: Ultrasound-Guided Fine Needle Aspiration Combined With Rapid Parathyroid Hormone Detection and Nano-Carbon Technology.

OBJECTIVE: The study aims to evaluate the clinic feasibility of rapid parathyroid hormone (PTH) detection and nano-carbon technology in preoperative diagnosis and localization of parathyroid adenoma. METHODS: With the guidance of ultrasound, the operator performed the parathyroid puncture and tested the PTH value by using a PTH test kit, and then injected nano-carbon into parathyroid adenoma as a marker to observe whether the parathyroid adenoma was stained black during the final operation. Meanwhile, a part of excised specimen was made into homogenate and detected rapidly again by using the …

Pseudohypoparathyroidism and idiopathic hypoparathyroidism: relationship between serum calcium and parathyroid hormone levels and urinary cyclic adenosine-3',5'-monophosphate response to parathyroid extract.

Forty patients with hypocalcemia and/or Albright's hereditary osteodystrophy were studied. Based on the estimation of serum calcium and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels as well as the urinary cAMP response to infusions with parathyroid extract, it was possible to classify all of the patients studied as cases with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism (n = 6, low PTH, normal cAMP response), pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) type I (n = 18, high PTH, low cAMP response) and type II (n = 2, high PTH, normal cAMP response), as well as pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism (n = 14, normal PTH, normal cAMP response). …

Neoplastic hormone-producing cells of the placenta produce and secrete parathyroid hormone-related protein. Studies by immunohistology, immunoassay, and polymerase chain reaction.

BACKGROUND: Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) was originally discovered as a product of tumors associated with hypercalcemia. Subsequent studies have demonstrated the widespread production of PTHrP in both fetal and adult tissues, among them the placenta, where it has been identified in amniotic epithelial cells and trophoblasts. However, studies of PTHrP production by the neoplastic placenta have not been reported. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We have studied placental cells and tissues for PTHrP by immunohistology, immunoassay, and the polymerase chain reaction. We studied normal placenta…

Parathyroid Hormone in the Management of Pelvic Fragility Fractures: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFPs) are increasingly prevalent given ageing populations. Conservative management is often primarily utilised due to its initial minimal displacement and the high risks of surgery in this vulnerable population. However, this can lead to rapid deconditioning, especially with non-weight-bearing protocols. Parathyroid hormone (PTH), as a bone anabolic agent, has the potential to improve clinical and radiological outcomes in FFPs, but the evidence remains limited. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines was undertak…

The levels of bone turnover markers and parathyroid hormone and their relationship in chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disease (CKD-MBD) is a major complication of CKD. Bone turnover markers (BTMs) are important for clinicians to evaluate and manage patients with CKD-MBD. This study aimed to assess BTMs in patients with CKD and their correlation with parathyroid hormone (PTH) and other clinical characteristics of CKD. METHODS: A total of 408 subjects were included in this study. The serum BTMs including N-terminal midfragment osteocalcin (N-MID OC), β-isomerized C-terminal telopeptides (β-CTX), and total procollagen type 1 amino-terminal propeptide (tPINP) were …
