Periodic performance feedback and cognitive ability interactively mitigate the vigilance decrement.

We investigated the effects of periodic performance feedback across three experiments. In Experiment 1, participants were assigned to either a feedback condition, in which there was periodic performance feedback (n = 302), or to a control condition, which received no feedback (n = 293). Whereas the control condition demonstrated a large vigilance decrement, even over a brief task duration, participants in the feedback condition performed both better overall and demonstrated a significantly shallower decrement. Experiment 2 (n = 103) was a preregistered replication with an extended task duratio

What contributes to our perception of the Shepard Tabletop Illusion?

A vertical parallelogram placed next to an identical one but rotated horizontally by 90 degrees gives rise to one of the most powerful geometrical illusions: the Shepard Tabletop Illusion. In this illusion, the two parallelograms, or tabletops, are perceived as having different aspect ratios: the vertical one appears longer and thinner than the horizontal one. Although the exact mechanisms responsible for the illusion remain unclear, it is commonly understood that the brain treats the vertical tabletop as a three-dimensional object receding into the distance, and the horizontal one as an objec

Color as a gate to verification: Super-additive costs in oculomotor disengagement.

Visual search theories distinguish between attentional capture and disengagement, yet how multiple feature dimensions combine to delay disengagement remains unclear. This study investigated whether shared features (color, shape, object category) produce additive or super-additive costs in oculomotor disengagement. Forty-three participants performed a delayed-disengagement task where a central fixated stimulus shared zero to three features with a peripheral target. Saccadic latency (SL) served as the index of disengagement cost. Results showed that SL increased nonlinearly with the number of sh

Obstacle coding in scene-selective cortices.

Navigating through complex environments requires detecting navigational constraints that arise from the interaction between paths and scene elements-so-called obstacles. Yet, the neural representation of such path-object interactions within scenes remains largely unknown. Across three fMRI experiments, we examined whether scene-selective regions-particularly the occipital place area (OPA)-encode the alignment between a path and an object that determines obstacle presence and its navigational significance. In Experiment 1, multivoxel pattern classification revealed that the OPA distinguished sc

New Insights Into Slow Reading: Behavioral and Electrophysiological Analyses of Visual Word Recognition in Arabic.

This study investigated the behavioral and electrophysiological differences between fast and slow readers among Arabic-speaking university students. We employed a classification methodology similar to that used in the rate versus accuracy approach of dyslexia subtyping. Fifty-five native Arabic-speaking university students participated in a lexical decision task involving high-frequency (HF) words, low-frequency (LF) words, and pseudowords (PWs). Behavioral and event-related potentials (ERPs) data were collected during the task. Participants were categorized as fast or slow readers based on th

Role of the left posterior middle temporal gyrus in shape recognition and its reconstruction during drawing: A study combining transcranial magnetic stimulation and functional near infrared spectroscopy.

There are numerous reports of enhanced or emerged visual arts abilities in patients with semantic impairment. These reports led to the theory that a loss of function on the language side of the brain can result in changes of ability to draw and/or to paint. Further, the left posterior middle temporal gyrus (l-pMTG) has been revealed to contribute to the higher control semantic mechanisms with objects recognition and integration of visual information, within a widely distributed network of the left hemisphere. Nevertheless, the theory has not been fully studied in neural bases. The aim of this

MEG evidence for left temporal and orbitofrontal involvement in breaking down inflected words and putting the pieces back together.

A major puzzle in the visual word recognition literature is how the human brain deals with complex words (e.g., presuppose). Prior work has shown that a multi-stage process is involved, starting with the early, form-based decomposition stage where a word is broken down into smaller pieces called morphemes {pre-}+{suppose} and ending with the recombination stages where the pieces are put back together to access the word's full meaning. However, most neurolinguistic studies have focused on the first stage, and/or on derivational morphology, which inherently carries both syntactic and semantic in

Early visual word processing in children with ADHD: An ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and reading disability (RD) co-occur frequently. Although reading comprehension difficulties in children with ADHD have been well documented, early visual word processing remains unclear. AIMS: This study investigated event-related potential (ERP) responses to visual stimuli in children with ADHD (6-12 years) by focusing on the N170 component, which signifies rapid, automatic, and specialized processing of visual words. PROCEDURES: Twenty children with ADHD and twenty typically developing (TD) children matched for sex and age perfor

The Representation of Observed Actions at the Subordinate, Basic, and Superordinate Level.

Actions can be planned and recognized at different hierarchical levels, ranging from very specific (e.g., to swim backstroke) to very broad (e.g., locomotion). Understanding the corresponding neural representation is an important prerequisite to reveal how our brain flexibly assigns meaning to the world around us. To address this question, we conducted an event-related fMRI study in male and female human participants in which we examined distinct representations of observed actions at the subordinate, basic and superordinate level. Using multiple regression representational similarity analysis

Nudging the N170 forward with prior stimulation-Bridging the gap between N170 and recognition potential.

Evoked response potentials are often divided up into numerous components, each with their own body of literature. But is there less variety than we might suppose? In this study, we nudge one component into looking like another. Both the N170 and recognition potential (RP) are N1 components in response to familiar objects. However, the RP is often measured with a forward mask that ends at stimulus onset whereas the N170 is often measured with no masking at all. This study investigates how inter-stimulus interval (ISI) may delay and distort the N170 into an RP by manipulating the temporal gap (I

Intragroup differences and similarities in performance on rapid automatized naming tasks in children with ADHD symptoms, children with reading disabilities, and controls.

Introduction Rapid automatized naming (RAN) is the ability to name, as fast as possible, symbols such as letters, digits and figures. The present study aimed to investigate intragroup performance patterns on RAN tasks in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms alone, children with reading disability (RD) alone and controls with typical development. Methods A total of 216 Brazilian children between 8 to 11 years old were selected from public schools located in two Brazilian capitals, namely Porto Alegre and Belo Horizonte, to participate in the study. Distinctive semantic features in the healthy adult brain.

The role of semantic features, which are distinctive (e.g., a zebra's stripes) or shared (e.g. has four legs) for accessing a concept, has been studied in detail in early neurodegenerative disease such as semantic dementia (SD). However, potential neural underpinnings of such processing have not been studied in healthy adults. The current study examines neural activation patterns using fMRI while participants completed a feature verification task, in which they identified shared or distinctive semantic features for a set of natural kinds and man-made artifacts. The results showed that the ante

Blurring attenuates the early posterior negativity in response to snake stimuli.

Previous event-related potential studies have reported enhanced Early Posterior Negativity (EPN) in response to snake pictures compared to pictures of other animals. This EPN snake effect may be partly driven by specific snake skin patterns. In this study, by using blurred pictures to make these patterns less visible, we explored whether the relative absence of such local features will attenuate the EPN snake effect. Non-blurred and blurred pictures of snakes, spiders, and birds were presented in a rapid serial visual presentation paradigm with a rate of three pictures per second. The EPN mean

Patterns of response to scrambled scenes reveal the importance of visual properties in the organization of scene-selective cortex.

Neuroimaging studies have found distinct patterns of neural response to different categories of scene in scene-selective regions of the human brain. However, it is not clear how information about scene category is represented in these regions. Images from different categories vary systematically in their visual properties as well as their semantic category. So, it is possible that patterns of neural response could reflect variation in visual properties. To address this question, we used fMRI to measure patterns of neural response to intact and scrambled scene categories. Although scrambling pr

Are baboons learning "orthographic" representations? Probably not.

The ability of Baboons (papio papio) to distinguish between English words and nonwords has been modeled using a deep learning convolutional network model that simulates a ventral pathway in which lexical representations of different granularity develop. However, given that pigeons (columba livia), whose brain morphology is drastically different, can also be trained to distinguish between English words and nonwords, it appears that a less species-specific learning algorithm may be required to explain this behavior. Accordingly, we examined whether the learning model of Rescorla and Wagner, whic

Four-year-old Cantonese-speaking children's online processing of relative clauses: a permutation analysis.

We report on an eye-tracking study that investigated four-year-old Cantonese-speaking children's online processing of subject and object relative clauses (RCs). Children's eye-movements were recorded as they listened to RC structures identifying a unique referent (e.g. "Can you pick up the horse that pushed the pig?"). Two RC types, classifier (CL) and ge3 RCs, were tested in a between-participants design. The two RC types differ in their syntactic analyses and frequency of occurrence, providing an important point of comparison for theories of RC acquisition and processing. A permutation analy

Neural stability: A reflection of automaticity in reading.

Automaticity, the ability to perform a task rapidly with minimal effort, plays a key role in reading fluency and is indexed by rapid automatized naming (RAN) and processing speed. Yet little is known about automaticity's neurophysiologic underpinnings. The more efficiently sound is encoded, the more automatic sound processing can be. In turn, this automaticity could free up cognitive resources such as attention and working memory to help build an integrative reading network. Therefore, we hypothesized that automaticity and reading fluency correlate with stable neural representation of sounds,

Lateralized occipito-temporal N1 responses to images of salient distorted finger postures.

For humans as social beings, other people's hands are highly visually conspicuous. Exceptionally striking are hands in other than natural configuration which have been found to elicit distinct brain activation. Here we studied response strength and lateralization of this activation using event-related potentials (ERPs), in particular, occipito-temporal N1 responses as correlates of activation in extrastriate body area. Participants viewed computer-generated images of hands, half of them showing distorted fingers, the other half showing natural fingers. As control stimuli of similar geometric c

Global shape processing: A behavioral and electrophysiological analysis of both contour and texture processing.

The number of corners on the boundary of a closed contour is thought to be particularly critical for shape detection and discrimination. The aim of the current study was to examine the relative contribution of the number of corners and the angle between corners to shape discrimination in complex visual scenes as well as to determine the time course and neural substrates of global shape processing based on the presence or absence of these specific features. In Experiment 1, event-related potentials were recorded while participants discriminated between two radial frequency (RF) patterns with th
