Work dynamics in family care of hemophilic children.

School-aged boys with hemophilia, their parents, and siblings were interviewed and observed over a 5-year period, the field work taking place in their homes, schools, and during hospitalization, clinic visits, and summer camp periods. Sequential, open-ended interviews, and participant-observation techniques enabled the inquiry to study the process of the children's development as a major factor in changes that occurred in the management of their illness over time. Qualitative issues identified for study focused on the divisions of labor inherent in family interactions concerning the care of th

Situational social problem-solving skills and self-esteem of aggressive and nonaggressive boys.

This study was designed to assess specific social problem-solving, perceived competence, and self-esteem characteristics of 20 aggressive and 18 nonaggressive boys. Significant behavioral differences existed between the groups. The problem-solving measure provided for qualitative assessment of specific problem solutions that children consider, varying according to the interpersonal context of conflicts with peers, teachers, and parents and to the level of others' intent in conflicts (ambiguous frustration and hostile provocation). In univariate analyses, aggressive children had poorer self-est

Observing troubled children's interpersonal negotiation strategies: implications of and for a developmental model.

29-year-old boys, both selected from a pool of children with socioemotional and interpersonal difficulties, were observed unobtrusively in 35 weekly hour-long pair therapy sessions over the course of 2 school years. A transcript/narrative analysis technique was used to identify all interpersonal negotiation strategies each child used within each session. Strategies were classified using a coding system that simultaneously ordered them according to 4 developmental levels (0, impulsive-physical; 1, unilateral-coercive; 2, reciprocal-influential; and 3, collaborative-mutual) and 2 interpersonal o

Stakeholder Perspectives on a Community-Based Peer-Led Biomedical HIV Prevention Intervention for Women Who Engage in Sex Work in Southwestern Uganda: Results from a Qualitative Study.

HIV prevalence among Ugandan women who engage in sex work (WESW) is 31%, yet uptake of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is suboptimal due to multiple factors, including stigma and barriers to accessing healthcare. "Peer mentors" (peer leaders within WESW networks) could facilitate community-based delivery of biomedical HIV prevention products for WESW. We conducted formative research with key stakeholders to refine a potential community-based, peer mentor-led PrEP/PEP intervention. From July-August 2023, we conducted focus group discussions (FGDs) and ke

Comparing health and mental health needs, service use, and barriers to services among sexual minority youths and their peers.

Using a representative national sample (N = 20,745), this article explores health and mental health needs, service use, and barriers to services among sexual minority youths (SMYs) and heterosexual peers. SMYs were defined by ever having a same-sex romantic attraction or having a recent same-sex romantic relationship or sexual partner. SMYs accounted for 7.5 percent of the sample. Data were analyzed to ascertain prevalence of risks and explore group differences. Compared with peers, SMY self-reports indicated higher prevalence rates on all indicators of health and mental health need. SMYs repo

The role of peer meetings for professional development in health science education: a qualitative analysis of reflective essays.

INTRODUCTION: The development of professional behaviour is an important objective for students in Health Sciences, with reflective skills being a basic condition for this development. Literature describes a variety of methods giving students opportunities and encouragement for reflection. Although the literature states that learning and working together in peer meetings fosters reflection, these findings are based on experienced professionals. We do not know whether participation in peer meetings also makes a positive contribution to the learning experiences of undergraduate students in terms

Profiles of Social Status Among at-Risk Adolescents in a Residential Setting: A Person-Centered Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents often care about their social status which may be influenced by various personality and behavioral characteristics. This study used a person-centered approach to examine intrapersonal (i.e., psychopathy, narcissism, self-esteem) and interpersonal (i.e., aggression, prosocial behavior) factors associated with how adolescents are perceived by peers. METHODS: Participants were 256 adolescents (61% of participants identified as male), ages 16-19, attending a 22-week quasi-military residential program. Self-report and peer-nomination data were collected. RESULTS: Latent

Adolescents may choose to belong to a peer group that is similar to them in terms of externalizing problem behaviors, and through peer group socialization (e.g., enticing, modelling, mimicking, and peer pressure) become more similar to that group over time.

Social problems associated with ADHD vs. ODD in children referred for friendship problems.

Four groups were composed of children referred for friendship problems (age range: 6 to 12 years old). One group was diagnosed with both Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional-Defiant Disorder (ODD), one group with ADHD only, one group with ODD only and one group with neither disorder. Parents and teachers were given questionnaires to rate the social behavior of each child. The groups differed significantly on one parent scale (Self-control) and one teacher scale (Aggression). Inspection of the items composing these scales suggested that some items measured social rel

Limitations are noted.

Promoting recovery and prevention simultaneously through peer providers to reduce the impact of childhood sexual abuse: Acceptability, feasibility, and fidelity of an integrated intervention model.

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) affects approximately 30% of American children assigned female at birth. CSA often has a negative impact on survivors, leading to poorer mental health and an increased risk of subsequent sexual victimization. The current proof-of-concept study sought to examine the acceptability, feasibility, and fidelity of a peer-facilitated, online, one-time group intervention model to simultaneously promote recovery and prevent further victimization. We developed a brief intervention model drawing from components of previously tested protocols (i.e., expressive writing, interpe

Homelessness and substance use among alcohol abusers following participation in project H&ART.

Project H&ART was a randomized intervention trial for homeless alcohol abusers in Albuquerque, N.M. Interventions were four months in duration and included: a high intensity program (case management plus peer-supervised housing), a medium intensity group (peer-supervised housing only); a housed, and a nonhoused control group. Clients were interviewed at baseline and re-interviewed ten months following program entry to determine substance use, housing stability and employment status. Program graduation rates were about 25% for the three housed groups. The outcome evaluation revealed significant

Confusion associated with the developmental problems of adolescence is intensified and prolonged for those suffering from sickle-cell anemia. Feelings of isolation and dependence due to a life-threatening disease can impede the transition to responsible, self-actualizing maturity. Weekly group meetings with nine young women suffering form sickle-cell anemia helped them move toward maturation and a sense of their own competence. Protocol for a partially nested randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network Support Group Leader EDucation (SPIN-SSLED) Program.

BACKGROUND: Some people with rare diseases rely on peer-led support groups for disease-specific education and emotional and practical support. Systemic sclerosis (SSc), or scleroderma, is a rare autoimmune connective tissue disease. Many people with SSc cannot access support groups, and, when support groups exist, they may not be sustained due to challenges that could be addressed via leader training. The Scleroderma Patient-centered Intervention Network (SPIN), along with SSc patient organization partners, developed a training program for SSc patient support group leaders, the Scleroderma Sup
