SAPHO syndrome (SS) is an autoinflammatory disease characterized by synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis. Among the sites affected by the osteoarticular manifestations of SS are the anterior chest wall and the mandible. The etiology of SS is still unknown; theories advocate a genetic predisposition and an infectious cause in association with disorders of the immune system. We report a case of SS in which there was the involvement of the mandible with a lesion of endodontic origin. A 44-year-old white woman diagnosed with SS at the university hospital was referred to the Depa

INTRODUCTION: Pulp necrosis in immature teeth and the resulting periodontal apical inflammation negatively affect root formation. Resolvin E1 (RvE1) is a lipid-derived endogenous pro-resolution molecule that controls inflammation. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the impact of RvE1 applied as an intracanal medication on root formation in nonvital immature teeth.
METHODS: To arrest root development, pulpectomy was performed in the lower first molars of 4-week-old Wistar rats. After 3 weeks, irrigation with 2.5% sodium hypochlorite and 0.9% sterile saline was performed, and either

BACKGROUND: Bisphosphonates inhibit osteoclasts, prevent bone resorption and decrease bone turnover. This study examined radiography finding in bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of jaws.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective series of 12 clinically diagnosed patients between 7 to 21 year old (average 13 years). They required emergency dental conditions requiring management by dentist: non healing extraction sockets and pain of bone exposure. The panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography was performed to assess the problem. Thickening of the lamina dura was obse

In the oldest elderly, an increase in the number of remaining teeth may increase oral infection foci. The aim of this follow-up study was to examine the radiologically detected oral health condition of a group of home-living elderly in Helsinki at 5-year intervals. The population of this study comprised 103 home-living elderly people, all participants of the population-based Helsinki Aging Study. Panoramic radiography supplemented by intraoral radiographs was performed on all these participants at the Institute of Dentistry, University of Helsinki, in 1990-1991. Follow-up radiographic examinat

Prevotella nigrescens, a gram-negative black-pigmented anaerobic rod, has frequently been isolated from periodontitis and periapical periodontitis lesions. We have isolated an exopolysaccharide-producing P. nigrescens, strain 22, from a chronic periodontitis lesion. The purpose of this study was to determine the chemical composition and function of the exopolysaccharide associated with this clinical isolate. The chemical composition and structure of the purified exopolysaccharide from strain 22 were determined by high performance liquid chromatography and methylation analysis. To define the bi…

Unique dental conditions in children include odontogenic cysts and tumors, hereditary dental diseases, developmental anomalies, and lesions associated with the eruption of the primary or permanent teeth. Many of these conditions have long lasting effects on the adult dentition in terms of affecting esthetics, function, and overall quality of life. Inherited dental syndromes affect the dental hard tissues specifically the enamel, dentin, and/or cementum in a generalized manner, involving both primary and permanent teeth. These conditions manifest in altered quality or quantity of the hard tissu

Repair or regeneration of the pulp, following trauma, is a part of the wound healing process. However, pulp necrosis or root resorption, whether partial or complete, might obstruct this process. Because of the neurovascular bundle at the apical foramen and the periodontal ligament, the pulp in this fragment generally remains normal when the apical fragment is not moved. We describe a mature upper left central incisor with a horizontal root fracture in the mid-third of the root and lateral luxation that healed on its own after undergoing a procedure called self-revascularization. The fracture w

Marx first reported avascular osteonecrosis of the jaw(ONJ)in oncology patients who had used high dose intravenous bisphosphonate(BP)at 2003. Ruggiero et al. also reported BP-related ONJ in osteoporosis patients who had used low dose oral BP at 2004. Since tooth extraction was considered one of risk factors for ONJ, discontinuation of BP before and after tooth extraction was recommended as one of preventive strategy for ONJ, especially in osteoporosis patients. However, recent studies showed that discontinuation of BP did not prevent ONJ, but increased the occurrence of adverse events such as

Tooth resorption is a common sequel which follows injuries or irritation to the periodontal ligament and/or tooth pulp. The course of tooth resorption involves an elaborate interaction among inflammatory cells, resorbing cells, and hard tissue structures. The key cells which are involved in resorption are multi-nucleated giant cells. Internal root resorptions are usually non-symptomatic and they are discovered occasionally through periapical radiographs, which reveal very defined and regular outlines. Many techniques and materials have been used to fill internal resorptive defects. Among them,

External cervical resorption (ECR) is a sequela of dentoalveolar trauma that may cause functional, esthetic, and psychologic alterations. The aim of this study was to report a successful multidisciplinary treatment approach performed in a 12-year-old patient who presented with posttraumatic ECR associated with extensive opened cavity, pulp necrosis, and periapical lesion of tooth number 9, with an initial unfavorable prognosis. Crown lengthening was done to enable restoration of vestibular surface with resin composite, forming a barrier that allowed endodontic treatment. Afterwards, a prefabri

Crown-root fractures in permanent teeth cause esthetic and functional problems. This paper reports the case of a complicated crown-root fracture in the maxillary right central incisor of a young patient who was treated with a multidisciplinary approach in two phases. A modified Widman flap, root canal therapy, glass fiber post cementation, and adhesive tooth fragment reattachment were performed shortly after an accident. Satisfactory esthetic and functional outcomes were obtained. However, the patient did not attend follow-up visits and returned after 7 years. During this second phase, the cli

The purpose of this study was to analyze the profile of glycosphingolipids (GSLs) in periradicular lesions refractory to endodontic treatment. Sixteen periapical lesions were removed surgically from patients (experimental group) and compared with 10 samples of periodontal ligament removed from extracted intact third molars (control group). After the GSLs extraction and purification procedures were performed the neutral and acidic GSL fractions were analyzed by high-performance thin-layer chromatography and quantified by densitometry. Data reported herein show that: (i) tissues in the experimen

Oral health and dental treatment needs were investigated in 50 randomly selected long-term medicine patients admitted to The Glostrup Hospital, University of Copenhagen, Glostrup, Denmark. All the patients were clinically and radiologically examined. Oral health generally was poor. Two-thirds (66%) of the patients were totally edentulous, 24% partially edentulous. Only 10% were dentate with no dentures. The number of remaining teeth per patient averaged 4.7, that of caries destructed teeth 1.4. All 17 patients with remaining teeth had periodontal disease, and 13 of them suffered from caries. A

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Teeth deemed nonrestorable because of inadequate ferrule and extensive structural loss, often from deep caries, fractures, or resorptive defects, are routinely planned for extraction and implant placement. Long-term clinical outcome data for a standardized surgical extrusion workflow designed to regain restorability while maintaining biologic stability are limited.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to assess clinical outcomes of surgical extrusion using the Seif surgical extrusion protocol (SSEP) as a tooth preservation alternative to extraction in severely

The aim of this report is to present an unusual case in which clinical symptoms recurred in an endodontically treated tooth after the patient received a COVID-19 vaccination. A 61-year-old woman reported severe pain in her maxillary right lateral incisor 2 months after completion of root canal treatment. The patient reported developing the clinical symptoms a few days after receiving the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. Clinical examination revealed no extraoral or intraoral swelling, but the incisor exhibited tenderness on percussion. Palpation of the surrounding tissue di

Evoked bleeding (EB) clinical procedure, comprising a disinfection step followed by periapical tissue laceration to induce the ingrowth of undifferentiated stem cells from the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, is currently the only regenerative-based therapeutic approach to treating pulp tissue necrosis in undeveloped (immature) permanent teeth approved in the United States. Yet, the disinfection step using antibiotic-based pastes leads to cytotoxic, warranting a biocompatible strategy to promote root canal disinfection with no or minimal side-effects to maximize the regenerative outcome

OBJECTIVE: Endodontic originated chronic apical periodontitis (AP) is an inflammatory disease of periapical tissue. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) as an inflammatory marker and hemogram indexes provide valuable information to clinicians for diagnosis, screening and follow-up of various diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate AP in terms of its association with hemogram indices and hsCRP levels.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Study includes 104 patients with AP and 40 participants as the control group. 160 teeth were diagnosed as AP through digital radiographic images and scored
