Risk Groups and Psychosocial Factors for the Pandemic (COVID-19).

COVID-19, which started in 2019 and affected the whole world, has affected everyone at different intensities and in different ways. COVID-19, which is considered a pandemic, has turned into a major public health problem in terms of its consequences and has affected people biopsychosocially. However, people in risk groups may be affected more. This study was conducted to reveal the risk groups for the pandemic and to determine the psychosocial factors. Data were collected online using the relational screening model and snowball sampling methods. A Sociodemographic Information Form, COVID-19 Pan

Relationship between psychosocial factors and onset of multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of psychosocial variables on patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and the relationship between these variables and the onset of MS. BACKGROUND: The current evidence indicates that many types of psychosocial factors are involved in the development and relapse of MS, and it has been suggested that they could serve as predictors as well. So far, little has been reported on the effect of psychosocial factors on MS and the relationship between psychosocial factors and the onset of MS. METHODS: Forty-one patients, 15 males and 26 f

A Rebuttal To Psychoanalytic Biography Of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938) was the founder of the modern-day Turkish Republic. Although much has been published about his life, only one biography adopted a psychological/psychoanalytic perspective. The authors Vamık Volkan and Norman Itzkowitz argued that the main driving mechanism behind Atatürk's behavior was his narcissistic personality organization. Their framework considered Mustafa's birth, which occurred shortly after his elder brothers had passed away, and how his mother, presumably in a state of severe depression, could not provide adequate emotional care, which gave way to co

[The dysthymia concept: current and historical aspects--an overview].

The article reviews the historical development of the understanding of dysthymia from C. F. Flemming (1844) to DSM-IV and to Akiskal's concepts. Recent results on epidemiology, comorbidity, neurobiology, familial patterns, clinical course, psychological characteristics, psycho- and pharmacotherapy of dysthymia are discussed. Although present concepts of dysthymia have led to results of high scientific and clinical relevance, the classification of chronic depression and their relation to both personality disorders and affective psychoses need further clarification. The development of dysthymia

[Probability in the clinical diagnoses of Pick disease and Alzheimer disease].

This paper is dedicated to the honour of Prof. Dr. Erich Sternberg. The diagnostical strategy of well-known specialists for the Morbus Pick and Morbus Alzheimer is considered. As a result of our own experiences and analyses the psychopathological factors are assigned to the following groups: change of vitality; change of personality; reversible organic psychoses; fuzzy brain-local symptoms; development of dementia. For these groups growth curves are given for which the analytic description by a special type of a differential equation, is used. The different behaviour of the development of the

An exploration of developmental factors related to deviant sexual preferences among adult rapists.

The aim of this study was to investigate developmental factors related to deviant sexual preferences in a sample of 118 sexual aggressors against women. For each subject, developmental factors were collected through a semistructured interview, whereas sexual preferences were assessed phallometrically using French translations of audiotaped stimuli developed by G. G. Abel, E. B. Blanchard, J. V. Becker, and A. Djenderedjian (1978). Using multiple regression analyses, our results showed that a sexually inappropriate family environment, use of pornography during childhood and adolescence, and dev

Friendship as a moderating factor in the pathway between early harsh home environment and later victimization in the peer group. The Conduct Problems Prevention Research Group.

Two prospective investigations of the moderating role of dyadic friendship in the developmental pathway to peer victimization are reported. In Study 1, the preschool home environments (i.e., harsh discipline, marital conflict, stress, abuse, and maternal hostility) of 389 children were assessed by trained interviewers. These children were then followed into the middle years of elementary school, with peer victimization, group social acceptance, and friendship assessed annually with a peer nomination inventory. In Study 2, the home environments of 243 children were assessed in the summer before

Attachment and loss experiences during childhood are associated with adult hostility, depression, and social support.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined developmental antecedents to psychosocial traits in adulthood that have been linked in prior studies to increased risk of heart disease. The hypothesis was tested that early parental loss coupled with poor-quality family relationships (FR) during childhood would be associated with increased hostility and depression, and lower social support in adulthood. METHODS: Participants included 30 university students who experienced the death of one parent before the age of 16, and 31 control participants. Questionnaires were completed measuring current social support, h

Is adolescent adjustment following parental divorce a function of predivorce adjustment?

This study examined whether adolescent adjustment problems which previously have been attributed to parental divorce exist prior to the divorce. Three groups (to-be-divorced, remain intact, and already divorced) were examined across four domains of adolescent functioning reported by multiple informants. The results indicated that adolescents from the to-be-divorced group functioned similarly to those who would remain in intact families but better than those in the already divorced group, suggesting that differences can be attributed to parental divorce and its accompanying disruption of family

[2 sets of monozygotic twins concordant for anorexia nervosa].

The case reports at hand describe the discordant and the common characteristics of two pairs of monozygotic twins, concordant for anorexia nervosa. The resulting test scores of psychometric questionnaires including the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) and the Eating Disorders Inventory (EDI) are descriptively presented and compared with each other. Finally the psychodynamic and the psychogenetic implications considering biogenetic findings are discussed.

High rates of alcohol problems and history of physical and sexual abuse among women inpatients.

A total of 88 consecutive new women patients were surveyed on an adult psychiatric inpatient unit which did not have a specific program for the treatment of alcoholics. Those with a self-reported history of physical and/or sexual abuse had significantly higher scores on the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) than those with no such history. Former drinkers and teetotalers were more likely to have been both physically and sexually abused than the others. Thirty-three patients (38%) reported a history of alcohol problems measured by scores of seven or more on the MAST, but only 20 had a d

Childhood sexual abuse in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this pilot study were to determine the feasibility and scientific merit of coordinating a large-scale investigation of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) in outpatient-eating disordered women and to evaluate the usefulness and potential adverse effects of a semistructured trauma interview. METHOD: The sample was randomly selected from subjects participating in a naturalistic longitudinal study of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). The refusal rate was 26%. Twenty women with DSM-III-R AN/BN were assessed with the traumatic antecedents interview (TAI); a brief sem

Negative cognitions and attributional style in depressed adolescents: an examination of stability and specificity.

Despite recent findings that the prevalence of unipolar depression is as high in adolescents as it is in adults, relatively little is known about the applicability of cognitive theories of depression to adolescents. The present study examined the nature, specificity, and stability of cognitive dysfunction in male and female depressed, remitted, and psychiatric control adolescents. Factor analysis of a diverse set of measures yielded two factors, labelled Negative Cognitions and Attributional Style. Scores on both these factors were related to a current diagnosis of depression. Results also ind

Evaluation of risk factors in childhood sexual abuse.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated whether the level of distress in sexually abused girls was predicted by the relationship of the perpetrator to the victim, the kind of abuse, the use of force, removal from the home, and race or ethnicity. METHOD: Seventy-five girls, recently reported as having been sexually abused, completed measures on depression, anxiety, and self-worth, which were then trichotomized into distress levels. RESULTS: Penetration predicted higher levels of distress on depression and self-worth measures. Force predicted higher levels of distress on those measures when the perpet

The adult adjustment of offspring of parents with drinking problems.

One hundred and sixty-four 16-35-year-old offspring of parents with drinking problems, recruited from a variety of clinical and community sources, were compared with 80 respondents of similar ages from similar sources who did not have parents with drinking problems. Each was interviewed using a semistructured interview. Adult adjustment was similar in the two groups, but the offspring of parents with drinking problems did report considerably more disharmony in their families of origin, and many more childhood difficulties. Factor analysis of the adult adjustment data for the samples combined s

Familial risk factors to oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder: parental psychopathology and maternal parenting.

In a sample of 177 clinic-referred children aged 7-13, an association was found between a diagnosis of conduct disorder (CD) and several aspects of family functioning: maternal parenting (supervision and persistence in discipline) and parental adjustment (paternal antisocial personality disorder and paternal substance abuse). Children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) were intermediate to families of children with CD and clinic control children on all variables, but differed from control children only in having a higher rate of paternal substance abuse and paternal antisocial personalit

Childhood depression and conduct disorder: I. Behavioral, affective, and cognitive aspects of family problem-solving interactions.

We assessed the family interactions of depressed, conduct-disordered, mixed depressed-conduct-disordered, and nonclinic children, ages 7-14 years, during a standardized family problem-solving discussion in the clinic. The child's and the mother's problem-solving proficiency, aversive behavior, and associated affective behavior (depressed and angry-hostile) were observed. The child and mother also rated each other's affect during the interaction for the dimensions sad, angry, critical, and happy on Likert-type scales. The child's and mother's cognitive constructions about the interaction were a
