[Variations in reproductive capacity, gonotrophic cycle and longevity of Anopheles sinensis infected by Brugia malayi larvae].

Under the experimental conditions of 26 +/- 10 degrees C, relative humidity 70-80%, 100 +/- 20 Lux and photoperiod 16 hours/day and using a membrane feeding method, the development of filarial larvae and the variations in reproductive capacity, gonotrophic cycle and longevity of An. sinensis infected with microfilariae of Brugia malayi were observed. The infection rate and infection intensity of filarial larvae in An. sinensis increased with the microfilarial density in the blood meal from 50 to 150 mf/20 microliters. The mature rate and IEI decreased when the density rose to 200 mg/20 microli…

Circadian desynchronization induces diabetes-like conditions in gestational female syrian hamsters.

Altered light exposure is an emerging risk factor for metabolic health; however, its effects on maternal physiology and pregnancy outcomes remain poorly understood. This study examined the effects of reversing the natural light-dark cycle (12 h dark:12 h light) during pregnancy in hamsters to mimic shift light exposure in human shift workers and assess associated metabolic changes during mid (10.5 days) and late gestation (14.5 days). Our results suggest that shift of light (SL) altered histomorphology, showing sinusoidal congestion, distorted liver architecture, and increased lipid accumulati

Environmental light deprivation disrupts Leydig cell maturation and male reproductive development in rats.

This study examined the effect of continuous dark exposure (DD) on male reproductive maturation in a rat model. Male rats were reared without light from postnatal day (pnd) 21 and analyzed at pnd 35 (juvenile), 42 (peripubertal), and 90 (adult), periods related to key stages of Leydig cell development. DD disrupted circadian locomotor activity and reduced overall physical activity. Early reductions in seminal vesicle and dorsal prostate weights suggested delayed androgen-dependent development. DD exposure significantly lowered circulating androgens and reduced the testosterone-to-corticosteron

Parasitism in Gambusia affinis: Fitness Effects in an Incipient Matrotroph.

Gambusia affinis (western mosquitofish) serves as a host for a variety of larval and adult parasites. Gambusia affinis is also an incipient matrotroph, exhibiting adjustments in post-fertilization provisioning to some offspring within a brood using recently acquired resources. Nutrient transfer to embryos is expected to limit the loss of embryo mass during development resulting in larger offspring. Since larger offspring are more likely to survive, maternal contributions are expected to increase fitness. The presence of parasites, particularly intestinal helminths, potentially reduces body con

Seasonal Distribution and Meteorological Factors Associated with Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease among Children in Xi'an, Northwestern China.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease in the Asia-Pacific region that primarily affects children younger than 5 years. Previous studies have confirmed that the seasonal transmission of this disease is strongly related to meteorological factors, but the results are not consistent. In addition, the associations between weather conditions and HFMD in northwestern China have not been investigated. Therefore, we aimed to examine this issue in Xi'an, the largest city of northwestern China that has been suffering from serious HFMD epidemics. In the current study, data fo

Sleep profile during fasting in PPAR-alpha knockout mice.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) is a transcription factor that belongs to the nuclear receptor family and plays an important role in regulating gene expression associated with lipid metabolism. PPARα promotes hepatic fatty acid oxidation and ketogenesis in response to fasting. Because energy metabolism is known to affect sleep regulation, manipulations that change PPARα are likely to affect sleep and other physiological phenotypes. In this study, we examined the role of PPARα in sleep/wake regulation using PPARα knockout (KO) mice. Sleep, body temperature (BT), locomot

Circadian Health and Light: A Report on the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Workshop.

Despite the omnipresence of artificial and natural light exposure, there exists little guidance in the United States and elsewhere on light exposure in terms of timing, intensity, spectrum, and other light characteristics known to affect human health, performance, and well-being; in parallel, there is little information regarding the quantity and characteristics of light exposure that people receive. To address this, the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research, in the Division of Lung Diseases, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, held a workshop in August 2016 on circadian health an

Spectral modulation of light wavelengths using optical filters: effect on melatonin secretion.

Shiftwork has been identified as a risk factor for various medical problems, such as cancer, heart disease, metabolic disturbances, depression, and anxiety disorders, and as reviewed this month, adverse reproductive function. Shiftwork misaligns physiological rhythms with respect to each other and to external environmental rhythms such as the 24-hour light/dark cycle. Light is the strongest time cue for entraining circadian rhythms in mammals, and aberrant light exposure patterns during shiftwork is one of the key factors that induce circadian misalignment. We have recently demonstrated, in bo

The effects of dietary cholesterol on metabolism and daily torpor patterns in Siberian hamsters.

The concentrations of fatty acids in the diet influence torpor in numerous species of mammals. Much less is known, however, about the potential effects of other types of dietary lipids. One study demonstrated that increasing dietary cholesterol levels during fall feeding increased torpor bout length and also decreased minimum body temperatures during hibernation by chipmunks. Another hibernation study with ground squirrels revealed that the cholesterol contents of both the cerebral cortex and the microsomes were significantly greater during arousal episodes than during torpor bouts, suggesting

Dorsomedial hypothalamic lesions block Syrian hamster testicular regression in short day lengths without diminishing increased testosterone negative-feedback sensitivity.

The dorsomedial nucleus (DMN) of the hypothalamus, the only site within the mediobasal hypothalamus of Syrian hamsters that both binds melatonin and has abundant concentrations of androgen receptors, has been proposed as a target tissue for induction of seasonal changes in brain sensitivity to steroid negative feedback. We tested whether DMN ablation, which does not interfere with pineal gland secretion of melatonin in short day lengths, prevents testicular regression by altering sensitivity to steroid negative feedback. Hamsters with DMN lesions, unlike control hamsters, failed to undergo tes

Circadian disruption induced by light-at-night accelerates aging and promotes tumorigenesis in young but not in old rats.

We evaluated the effect of exposure to constant light started at the age of 1 month and at the age of 14 months on the survival, life span, tumorigenesis and age-related dynamics of antioxidant enzymes activity in various organs in comparison to the rats maintained at the standard (12:12 light/dark) light/dark regimen. We found that exposure to constant light started at the age of 1 month accelerated spontaneous tumorigenesis and shortened life span both in male and female rats as compared to the standard regimen. At the same time, the exposure to constant light started at the age of 14 months

The timing of normal puberty and the age limits of sexual precocity: variations around the world, secular trends, and changes after migration.

During the past decade, possible advancement in timing of puberty has been reported in the United States. In addition, early pubertal development and an increased incidence of sexual precocity have been noticed in children, primarily girls, migrating for foreign adoption in several Western European countries. These observations are raising the issues of current differences and secular trends in timing of puberty in relation to ethnic, geographical, and socioeconomic background. None of these factors provide an unequivocal explanation for the earlier onset of puberty seen in the United States.

Sequential feeding can increase activity and improve gait score in meat-type chickens.

This study investigated the short- and long-term effects of sequential feeding by alternating low-and high-lysine diets during the day on growth, gait score (GS), and behavior in broilers. From Days 2 to 12, 6 pens of 10 birds were assigned to control treatment and fed a standard normal lysine diet (NL) (ME = 3,250 kcal/kg, CP = 23%, Lys = 1.19%) and six pens of 10 birds were assigned to the sequential treatment and fed a low-lysine diet (LL) (Lys = 0.85%) for half of the day and NL for the other half of the day. From Days 13 to 21, all groups were fed NL, and from Days 21 to 42, they were fed

A longitudinal study of leptin during development in the male rhesus monkey: the effect of body composition and season on circulating leptin levels.

The objective of this study was to examine longitudinal changes in serum leptin concentrations during development and to correlate those changes with sexual development in male rhesus monkeys housed under natural environmental conditions. Blood samples were drawn from 8 control animals approximately every other month from 10 to 30 mo of age and thereafter monthly through 80 mo of age. Leptin levels declined through the juvenile period until the onset of puberty and were negatively correlated with body weight. Seven of the eight animals became sexually mature during the breeding season of their

Rhythms of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase in brain of chick and their inhibition by light.

Melatonin was recently shown to be a component of the antioxidative defense system of organisms due to its free radical scavenging and antioxidant activities. Pharmacologically, melatonin stimulates the activity of the peroxide detoxifying enzyme glutathione peroxidase in rat brain and in several tissues of chicks. In this report, we studied the endogenous rhythm of two antioxidant enzymes, glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase, in five regions (hippocampus, hypothalamus, striatum, cortex and cerebellum) of chick brain and correlated them with physiological blood melatonin concentra

Alpha2-adrenoceptor agonist medetomidine affects the melatonin rhythm in rats.

We investigated whether alpha2-adrenergic mechanisms participate in the regulation of the daily melatonin rhythm. Female Wistar rats, living under 12:12 h light-dark conditions, received a subcutaneous injection of saline or medetomidine (alpha2-adrenoceptor agonist; 100 microg/kg) 1 h after lights off. Thereafter they were kept in continuous darkness. Pineal glands were collected for melatonin measurements at 2-h intervals during the first and second subjective nights. During both nights, a significant elevation of melatonin levels in medetomidine-injected rats was found 2 h later than in con

Melatonin accelerates reentrainment of circadian locomotor activity rhythms to new light-dark cycles in the rat.

We examined whether continuous melatonin administration through subcutaneously implanted silastic tubing accelerates reentrainment of circadian rhythms of locomotor activity to shifted illumination cycles. We found that rats required less time to reentrain to an advanced or delayed phase shift of a light-dark cycle while carrying a silastic implant filled with melatonin than while carrying an empty implant. These results suggest that continuous administration of melatonin accelerates the reentrainment of the circadian locomotor activity rhythm to a new light-dark cycle.
