Effects of acamprosate on sleep during alcohol withdrawal: A double-blind placebo-controlled polysomnographic study in alcohol-dependent subjects.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are frequently encountered in alcohol-dependent patients. Drugs improving sleep during abstinence from alcohol may play an important role in the recovery process. METHODS: In the present study, the effects of acamprosate, a drug successfully used in maintaining abstinence following alcohol withdrawal, were assessed by polysomnographic recordings. A parallel double-blind placebo-controlled study was conducted in 24 male DSM-IV alcohol-dependent subjects aged 35.9+/-1.2 years. Treatments (2 tablets of 333 mg acamprosate vs placebo t.i.d.) were initiated 8 days bef

Disentangling the effects of safety-behavior utilization and safety-behavior availability during exposure-based treatment: a placebo-controlled trial.

The primary aim of the current study was to further investigate the deleterious effects of safety-seeking behaviors on fear reduction by disentangling the effects of perceived availability of threat-relevant safety behaviors during treatment versus their actual use. Participants (N=72) displaying marked claustrophobic fear were randomly assigned to 1 of 5 conditions: (a) exposure only (EO), (b) exposure with phobic safety-behavior availability (SBA), (c) exposure with safety-behavior utilization (SBU), (d) credible placebo treatment (PL), or (e) wait list (WL). High end-state functioning rates

Topical vapocoolant quickly and effectively reduces vaccine-associated pain: results of a randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive international travel preparation often requires several vaccines. Up to 90% of adults have some fear of injections, mostly due to injection-related pain. Pediatric studies with routine vaccines have shown topical anesthetic EMLA cream (lidocaine and prilocaine, Astra Pharmaceuticals, Inc.) and the topical vapocoolant Fluori-Methane (dichlorodifluoromethane and trichlorodifluoromethane, Gebauer Co.) to be equally effective in reducing pain from vaccinations. EMLA cream is expensive and requires a 60-min application, while Fluori-Methane (FM) is immediate in onset of ac

Effects of sucralfate on mucositis during and following radiotherapy of malignancies in the head and neck region. A double-blind placebo-controlled study.

Radiotherapy of head and neck malignancies is accompanied by oral discomforts, such as epithelitis, pain and functional impairment. This can lead to chronic sequalae with subjective distress such as loss of taste and xerostomia and pronounced decrease in quality of life. Thus, the need to reduce the mucosal damage following radiotherapy is obvious. Therefore, we investigated the possible ability of sucralfate, an aluminium hydroxide complex of sulphated sucrose used in the treatment of gastric ulcer, in preventing oral discomfort in patients treated with curative intent for malignancies in the

Cardiovascular and symptomatic reduction effects of alprazolam and imipramine in patients with panic disorder: results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

Seventy-nine patients with panic disorder were randomized to an 8-week double-blind treatment with alprazolam, imipramine, or placebo. Patients kept daily records of panic attacks, activity, anxiety, sleep, and medication use. Weekly measures of anxiety, depression, somatic symptoms, fears, avoidance, disability, and improvement were obtained. All patients underwent a symptom-limited exercise treadmill and other cardiovascular measures. By physician and patient global assessment, patients receiving alprazolam or imipramine were significantly better than patients on placebo. The alprazolam effe

Effect of a Single Subanesthetic Dose of Esketamine on Gastrointestinal Recovery After Laparoscopic Colorectal Cancer Surgery: A Randomized, Outcome-Assessor-Blinded, Placebo-Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Postoperative gastrointestinal dysfunction (POGD) and Postoperative gastrointestinal intolerance (POGI) remain a critical challenge in abdominal surgery, particularly for colorectal cancer patients undergoing laparoscopic procedures. Current evidence suggests anesthetic agents may influence gastrointestinal recovery, yet the impact of esketamine remains underexplored. This trial aimed to investigate whether intraoperative esketamine administration accelerates gastrointestinal function recovery. METHODS: In this single-center, randomized, outcome-assessor -blind trial, 104 patients (a

Effect of Metformin Monotherapy on Circulating Leptin Levels in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Bayesian Meta-analysis of Randomized Placebo Controlled Trials.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine condition that presents with reproductive, metabolic, and cardiometabolic disturbances. Altered adipokine activity, including changes in circulating leptin, a macromolecule, may contribute to its clinical features. Metformin is widely used to improve insulin resistance and reproductive outcomes in this population, yet its effect on leptin has remained uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated randomized controlled trials comparing metformin with placebo for changes in circulating leptin levels in women with PCOS. Six tr

Effect of Budesonide Nasal Irrigation in Patients With Chronic Rhinosinusitis With Nasal Polyps Without Prior Sinus Surgery: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study.

BACKGROUND: The indication for nasal irrigation with corticosteroids after sinus surgery in patients with Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyps (CRSwNP) is well established, as surgery facilitates distribution throughout the sinonasal cavity. However, it remains unknown whether this approach could also provide therapeutic benefit prior to surgery. This study aims to compare the effect of budesonide versus saline nasal irrigation in surgically naive CRSwNP patients. METHODS: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel-group study was conducted in 52 patients with diffuse type 2

Effect of orally administered L. crispatus M247 in favoring HR-HPV clearance and CST shift: results from a randomized, multi-center, placebo-controlled trial.

Epidemiological evidence support the idea that CST I, L. crispatus-dominated vaginal microbiota, could protect women form cervical HPV infection also favoring the HPV clearance. Our prospective, multi-center, randomized, placebo-controlled trial on 62 women newly diagnosed of HPV infection without visible cervical lesions at colposcopy, was mainly aimed at evaluating the role exerted by the oral treatment (daily, 4 months) with the strain L. crispatus M247 in prompting the HR-HPV clearance and CST shift. The results of our study demonstrated that the probiotic treatment significantly increased
