ABHD5 frameshift deletion in Golden Retrievers with ichthyosis.

Ichthyoses are hereditary skin disorders characterized by the formation of scales and defects in the outermost layer of the epidermis. In dogs, at least six different breed-specific ichthyoses including a relatively common PNPLA1-related autosomal recessive ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers are known. In this study, we investigated 14 Golden Retrievers with scales that were not homozygous for the mutant PNPLA1 allele suggesting a genetically distinct new form of ichthyosis. Histopathological examinations showed lamellar, orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis, and mildly hyperplastic epidermis that led t

Diarrhoea-causing enteric protist species in intensively and extensively raised pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) in Southern Spain. Part I: Prevalence and genetic diversity.

Numerous protist species are shared between humans and pigs. Among those, Giardia duodenalis, Cryptosporidium spp. and Balantioides coli have a clear public and animal health significance. For others such as Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Blastocystis sp., their impact on animal health has not been fully established. Little information is currently available on the molecular diversity of these protists in swine populations. To fill this gap, we molecularly assessed G. duodenalis, Cryptosporidium spp., B. coli, Blastocystis sp. and E. bieneusi in faecal samples from Iberian and Large White pigs ra

CNGC Gene Family in Pyrus betulaefolia: Genome-Wide Analysis and CNGC4/14 Function in Salt Tolerance via DNA Methylation.

Salt stress severely restricts the growth and development of pear trees, and DNA methylation may potentially modulate the salt tolerance of Pyrus betulaefolia by regulating ion transporter genes. Cyclic nucleotide-gated channel (CNGC) family genes are essential for plant ion transport and salt stress adaptation; however, the epigenetic regulatory relationship between DNA methylation and CNGC genes underlying pear salt tolerance remains unclear. In this study, 26 PbCNGC genes were systematically identified from P. betulaefolia, which possess the conserved motifs characteristic of the CNGC famil

Genome-Wide Identification of the APRR2 Gene Family and Rind Color Trait Analysis in Zucchini (Cucurbita pepo).

Rind color is an important quality trait in zucchini (Cucurbita pepo). As a core transcription factor in plant pigment biosynthesis, APRR2 plays a conserved yet mechanistically diverse regulatory role in the formation of rind color in various vegetables. However, the APRR2 transcription factor regulates rind color but has not been systematically identified in C. pepo. In this study, 50 APRR2 genes were defined by the presence of the conserved REC domain verified. These genes were identified and found to be unevenly distributed across the 20 chromosomes, primarily expanded through tandem duplic

Genome-wide analysis of the FBA gene family in soybean and their expression profile under salt-alkali stress.

Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate aldolases (FBAs; EC 4.1.2.13) are core enzymes involved in glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, and the Calvin cycle, exerting vital functions in carbon allocation, plant growth and development, as well as the adaptation to abiotic stresses. Although the FBA gene family has been systematically characterized in a variety of plant species, a comprehensive characterization of FBAs in soybean (Glycine max) remains unreported to date, restricting the elucidation of the conserved and legume-specific functions of GmFBA genes in stress adaptation. In the present study, a total of 13

LC-MS/MS-based phenolic profiling and IRAP-PCR analysis reveal biochemical and genomic responses of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) to salt stress.

BACKGROUND: Salinity is a major abiotic stress factor that affects plant growth, secondary metabolism, and genomic stability. Phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity are key biochemical indicators of plant stress responses, while retrotransposon activity reflects molecular-level genomic plasticity. This study investigated the physiological and molecular responses of Linum usitatissimum L. (flax) to different salt concentrations, aiming to better understand the mechanisms underlying salinity tolerance. METHODS AND RESULTS: Flax plantlets were grown in vitro on Murashige and Skoog (MS) mediu

Elevated atmospheric CO2 enhances submergence tolerance in Sub1 introgressed rice varieties and their recurrent parents.

Rice, as a staple food for more than half of the global population, faces dual challenges from climate change and frequent submergence stress in lowland ecosystems. To elucidate the effect of elevated CO2 on morpho-physiological responses in submergence tolerant and susceptible rice varieties, we conducted a field experiment featuring two levels of CO2: ambient (400 ± 10 μmol mol-1) and elevated (550 ± 20 μmol mol-1). The experiment included four cultivars of Indica rice (Oryza sativa L.): Swarna-Sub1, IR64-Sub1 (which are tolerant to submergence), along with their recurrent parent varieties,

A Data Driven Approach to Assess Complex Colour Profiles in Plant Tissues.

The ability to quantify the colour of fruit is extremely important for a number of applied fields including plant breeding, postharvest assessment, and consumer quality assessment. Fruit and other plant organs display highly complex colour patterning. This complexity makes it challenging to compare and contrast colours in an accurate and time efficient manner. Multiple methodologies exist that attempt to digitally quantify colour in complex images but these either require a priori knowledge to assign colours to a particular bin, or fit the colours present within segment of the colour space int…

Identification of Key Gene Networks and Deciphering Transcriptional Regulators Associated With Peanut Embryo Abortion Mediated by Calcium Deficiency.

Peanut embryo development is easily affected by a variety of nutrient elements in the soil, especially the calcium level. Peanut produces abortive embryos in calcium-deficient soil, but underlying mechanism remains unclear. Thus, identifying key transcriptional regulators and their associated regulatory networks promises to contribute to a better understanding of this process. In this study, cellular biology and gene expression analyses were performed to investigate peanut embryo development with the aim to discern the global architecture of gene regulatory networks underlying peanut embryo ab

[Review of contributing factors and research model of "excellent shape, high quality, and superior effect" of Dao-di herbs].

Based on the research results and development trend of modern life sciences, our team first proposed in 2020 that Dao-di herbs had the characteristics of "excellent shape, high quality, and superior effect", which broadened the scope of traditional medicinal herb description. In recent years, with the gradual deepening of the research on the natural, material, and medicinal properties of Dao-di herbs in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), the scientific connotation of "excellent shape, high quality, and superior effect" of Dao-di herbs has been enriched. "High quality&q

Inferring genetic values and variances from pre-processed phenotypes.

It is common in quantitative genetics to submit phenotypes to pre-processing prior to data analysis. The objective is to make computations simpler. In areas where field data is observational, e.g., studies of complex traits, records are often pre-adjusted for nuisance factors such as location, demographical structure and macroenvironments, that may mask expression of genetic values. The nuisance effects may be estimated by ordinary or generalized least-squares. We studied consequences of ignoring pre-correction of nuisance (fixed) effects using a mixed linear model framework supplemented by an

AcCOMT9 positive regulates Cd tolerance in kiwifruit by modulating heavy metal transport and antioxidant capacity.

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination poses a severe threat to crop productivity and food safety. Melatonin, a potent endogenous antioxidant and signaling molecule, plays a pivotal role in mitigating plant abiotic stresses, including Cd stress. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying melatonin-mediated Cd tolerance in kiwifruit remain poorly understood. Here, we systematically dissected the regulatory role of melatonin and its biosynthesis gene AcCOMT9 in modulating kiwifruit Cd tolerance. Exogenous melatonin application (150 μM) significantly alleviated Cd-induced oxidative damage and upregula

Flower- and Water-Dwelling Yeasts Influence Nectar-Seeking and Oviposition Behavior in the Asian Tiger Mosquito with Distinct Volatile Organic Compound Profiles.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by flowers and aquatic microorganisms influence mosquito behavior, but the role of water- and nectar-dwelling yeasts remains underexplored. In Aedes albopictus, we characterized yeast communities from visited and non-visited flowers, and from colonized and non-colonized breeding-site waters in urban community gardens. Mint flowers were preferentially visited, and the yeasts Metschnikowia reukaufii and Aureobasidium pullulans, present at higher densities in this plant, strongly attracted adult males and females, respectively. GC-MS analysis showed that

Effects of Elevated CO2 on Yield and Nutritional Quality of Kale and Spinach: A Meta-Analysis.

Elevated atmospheric CO2 is known to alter plant physiology, yet its specific effects on nutrient-rich leafy vegetables remain insufficiently quantified. This study aimed to examine how eCO2 influences yield and nutritional quality in kale (Brassica oleracea) and spinach (Spinacia oleracea) through the first meta-analysis focused exclusively on these crops. Following the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence (CEE) guidelines, we systematically reviewed eligible studies and conducted a random-effects meta-analysis to evaluate overall and subgroup responses based on CO2 concentration, crop ty

CISP, an Intrinsically Disordered Cold-Inducible Barley Protein, Functions as a Small RNA Chaperone.

Low temperatures are a major environmental stress that limits plant growth and development. Understanding the molecular mechanism of cold tolerance is therefore essential for improving crop performance through molecular breeding. In this study, we focused on CISP, a small, previously uncharacterized protein, specifically induced in barley roots under low temperature conditions, and investigated its potential role in cold tolerance. Heterologous expression of CISP in Escherichia coli enhanced late-phase bacterial growth at low temperatures compared with the wild-type strain. Similarly, overexpr

Genome-wide identification of Lhcb gene family and functional characterization of BcLhcb1.2 for cold tolerance in non-heading Chinese cabbage.

The light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b binding protein (Lhcb) constitutes the antenna system of photosystem II (PSII), which also plays an important role in plant growth and responses to abiotic stress. However, the role of Lhcb genes in cold stress remains poorly characterized in non-heading Chinese cabbage. Here, 25 BcLhcb genes were identified and classified into 8 subfamilies, and these genes were mapped to nine chromosomes. Analysis indicated that BcLhcb genes may respond to hormonal and abiotic stress. Subcellular localization and expression pattern demonstrated that BcLhcb1.2, a chloropla

Efficient large-fragment isogenic sequence replacement in rice via prime editing with engineered reverse transcriptase variants.

INTRODUCTION: Achieving efficient and precise replacement of large genomic fragments with isogenic sequences remains a major challenge in plant genome editing, limiting the exploitation of natural allelic diversity for trait improvement. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to develop an optimized prime editing (PE) strategy for high-efficiency, large-fragment isogenic sequence replacement (ISR) in rice. METHODS: We systematically compared nuclease-based PE, template-jumping PE (TJ-PE), and GRAND PE strategies. We engineered a series of M-MLV reverse transcriptase (RT) variants and evaluated their pe

Beyond Mixed Utilization: Fractionation, Functional Divergence, and Precision Applications of Soybean 7S and 11S Globulins.

Soybean β-conglycinin (7S) and glycinin (11S) differ markedly in their structure, physicochemical properties, and bioactivity; however, industrial practice still treats them as a mixed ingredient, obscuring their differentiated functional potential. This review critically evaluates fractionation technologies through the lens of the "purity-yield-sustainability" trilemma. First-generation chemical precipitation methods achieve high purity at the laboratory scale but suffer from heavy reagent use, environmental burden, and poor scalability. Second-generation green and physical techniques, such a
