Serial Excision for the Treatment of Giant Congenital Melanocytic Nevus: The Vietnamese Way.

AIM: To investigate the efficacy of plastic surgery in the treatment of giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN). METHODS: We enrolled 20 patients with 44 lesions and performed one of the following procedures: serial excision, skin grafting, tissue expansion, primary skin closure, distant flap, and adjacent flap. We assessed the outcome at 10 days and 6 months after surgery. RESULTS: Of 44 surgical sites, the most commonly used reconstruction surgeries were serial excision (16), skin grafting (16), and tissue expansion (6). Other types were rarely used. All patients with serial excision had

Current Status of Endoscopic Surgery in Japan: The 15th National Survey of Endoscopic Surgery by the Japan Society for Endoscopic Surgery.

In Japan, the first endoscopic surgery, a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, was performed in 1990. Since then, operative procedures have been standardized, and the safety and efficacy of endoscopic surgery have been evaluated. In accordance with the social acceptance of endoscopic surgery as a less invasive type of surgery, the number of endoscopic procedures performed has increased in all surgical domains. The Japan Society for Endoscopic Surgery (JSES) has played an important role in the development of endoscopic surgery in Japan. Notably, a technical skills certification system for surgeons was

A computer-based method of filing photographs and procedures.

Careful preoperative and postoperative photographs are an essential part of facial plastic surgery for medical and legal documentation, publication, patient education, and lectures. Computers play an increasing role in many aspects of the medical practice. A method of filing photographs and procedures and a related data base system allows rapid access by multiple factors, including name, procedure, age, surgeon, assistants, anesthetic, complications, dates of all photographs, multiple procedure subheadings, and so on. Additional variables can be added as a date base for analysis of operation r

Obesity surgery: French medico-legal aspects.

The demand for bariatric surgery is expected to increase. It is a procedure that carries a high surgical risk, and a risk of postoperative complications due to the pathologies associated with obesity. Obesity surgery is not classified as plastic surgery, but may subsequently lead to plastic surgery-type operations. Malpractices in the field of obesity surgery are most frequently at the pre-operative stage. In the absence of any fault, a patient may obtain indemnification by "national solidarity". Physicians and surgeons have an obligation to be able to prove that they informed their patients p

[Psychic hospitalism in patients confined to bed for long periods of time in the septic ward for posttraumatic osteomyelitis].

It has to be emphasized that the reconstruction of the soft tissue cover of the lower leg is an important procedure. Plastic surgery has to be performed primarily. Otherwise the consequences beside multiple procedures are a very long hospitalization. In this connection, the evaluation of patients shows very grave psychological changes and difficulties in regard to social rehabilitation.

Psychiatric Disorders in Aesthetic Surgery: A Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric disorders are common among patients seeking aesthetic surgery, yet preoperative psychological assessments are rarely standardized. Identifying these conditions is essential, as they can significantly affect postoperative satisfaction and mental well-being. METHODS: This prospective multicentric study was conducted in three Belgian hospitals (Erasme, Brugmann, and CHIREC Braine-l'Alleud) between June 2022 and December 2024. Seventy-five patients consulting for aesthetic procedures underwent a 2-hour preoperative consultation including psychological evaluation with the B

Three-Dimensional Affordable Stone Models for Cleft Lip Markings: A Prospective Study of Learner Satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION: Knowledge of surgical markings for unilateral cleft lip (UCL) repair is critical for surgical competency. However, few appropriate models are accessible to residents and affordable and accurately reproduce this 3-dimensional (3D) deformity. We propose that cleft care units have the capability of creating affordable 3D stone models to teach UCL markings. METHODS: Polyvinyl siloxane and SnapStone were used to create UCL stone models. Thirteen plastic surgery residents were prospectively recruited, provided with a textbook chapter and online module for studying surgical markings fo

The Use of Patient-Specific Three-Dimensional Printed Surgical Models Enhances Plastic Surgery Resident Education in Craniofacial Surgery.

PURPOSE: A significant challenge in surgical education is to provide a meaningful hands-on experience with the pathology the trainee will see in independent practice. Craniofacial anatomy is challenging and unfamiliar to the learner. METHODS: Using preoperative computed tomography data, the authors produced an accurately sized, three-dimensional (3D) printed model of the congenital craniofacial anatomy of patients treated by the same attending surgeon-PGY4 resident surgeon pair over the course of a 6-month rotation. A preoperative stepwise surgical plan was written by the attending and reside

Plastic surgical operative workload in major trauma patients following establishment of the major trauma network in England: A retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The introduction of major trauma centres (MTCs) in England has led to 63% reduction in trauma mortality.(1) The role of plastic surgeons supporting these centres has not been quantified previously. This study aimed to quantify plastic surgical workload at an urban MTC to determine the contribution of plastic surgeons to major trauma care. METHODS: All Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN)-recorded major trauma patients who presented to an urban MTC in 2013 and underwent an operation were identified retrospectively. Patients who underwent plastic surgery were identified and th

Management of facial trauma: lessons of war.

Soft tissue trauma of the head and neck is encountered frequently by the battlefield head and neck surgeon. Repair of the soft tissue (as well as bony fractures) of the head and neck is undertaken with the intent of providing return of form and function to the injured patient. Aggressive management of head and neck wounds is necessary to prevent excessive tissue loss due to ischemia or infection. Fortunately, the battlefield head and neck surgeon is armed with an array of surgical advances including local, regional, and free tissue grafts as well as advances in wound care and wound care produc

Plastic Bronchitis in Adult and Pediatric Patients: A Review of its Presentation, Diagnosis, and Treatment.

PURPOSE OF STUDY: Plastic Bronchitis (PB) is a rare pulmonary condition characterized by the presence of casts in the trachea or bronchial tree. While there are many individual cases reported in pediatric and adult populations, no thorough reviews of pediatric and adult cases of PB exist in the literature. The purpose of this article is to conduct a comprehensive review of PB regarding presentation, diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatments. ETIOLOGY: In the pediatric population, PB can be attributed to pediatric cardiothoracic surgeries such as Fontan procedures, infections, inflammatory pr

Surgical coverage of exposed root surfaces: a review of available techniques and applications.

Exposed root surfaces often create esthetic problems with less-than- satisfactory restorative solutions. Gingival recession may result in thermal and tactile sensitivity that is unresponsive to treatment with desensitizing agents. Surgical procedures for the coverage of exposed root surfaces have provided successful and highly predictable results even in deep, wide areas of recession. This article reviews the available procedures and discusses the indications for periodontal plastic surgery. Clinical cases are presented that demonstrate solutions to commonly encountered clinical problems that

The bioethics of separating conjoined twins in plastic surgery.

The incidence of craniopagus twins approximates four to six per 10 million births. Although rare, surgical separation of conjoined twins poses significant technical and ethical challenges. The present report uses the case of craniopagus twins AD and TD to examine the bioethical issues faced by a multidisciplinary medical team in planning the separation of craniopagus twins. AD and TD are craniopagus twins conjoined at the head. TD's head is conjoined to the back of AD's head. Neurologically, AD has the dominant cerebral circulation. TD has two normal kidneys, whereas AD has none. AD depends on

A Novel Modified-Vista Technique With Connective Tissue Graft in the Treatment of Gingival Recession: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing esthetic demands from patients have required that clinicians sharpen their skills and adopt newer and more novel techniques to satisfy these demands. In periodontal therapy, periodontal plastic surgery poses a substantial challenge to the clinician, both because it is technique sensitive and also because it includes a wide array of procedures and their variations. Conventional plastic procedures have provided satisfactory results in the treatment of gingival recession but there is, presently, a greater need for more advanced procedures that cause less surgical morb
