BACKGROUND: Treatment options for irreparable cuff tears include synthetic interposition grafts, but whether such grafts can maintain acceptable shoulder function and prevent cuff tear arthropathy in the long-term is unknown.
METHOD: This was a retrospective case series of 13 consecutive patients treated with a synthetic interposition graft made of Dacron (DuPont, Wilmington, DE, USA). Patients were examined with bilateral ultrasonography, bilateral x-ray imaging, Constant-Murley score, and Western Ontario Rotator Cuff score.

A 79-year old man with a pulsatile mass in his left groin was admitted to our institution in 2012. He had undergone an aortobifemoral bypass using a bifurcated Cooley double velour knitted Dacron graft for aortoiliac occlusive disease in 1982. Circular elasticity cannot be obtained in standard patch aortaplasty in patients with coarctation of aorta. We inserted Dacron patch perpendicularly to standard fashion. The creases of Dacron patch became parallel to descenden aorta. Aortic root abscess is a common complication of aortic valve endocarditis. However, aortic root abscess and formation of a fistula from the aortic root to the right ventricular outflow tract in the setting of a native aortic valve and previous repair of an aortic dissection with a Dacron graft is an uncommon event. Transesophageal echocardiography is superior to transthoracic echocardiography for the diagnosis of aortic root abscess. To our knowledge, no studies have compared the diagnostic value of cardiac MRI with transesophageal echocardiography for this condition.

We describe a 54-year-old man who had an ascending aortic prosthetic graft and a porcine aortic valve prosthesis that were infected by Candida albicans. This infection led to the formation of a dissecting false aneurysm of the remaining transverse and entire descending thoracic aorta, and the man was admitted to our hospital for surgical treatment in February of 1991. We have examined the clinical results of 56 externally-supported (EXS) Dacron grafts in the axillofemoral position and 117 in the femoropopliteal position.
