The effect of gregariousness in cyprid settlement assays.

The in vitro settlement assay using cyprids of Balanus. amphitrite is an important tool in basic and applied research. The aim of this study was to quantify the effect of gregariousness within these assays, and to determine the interaction between gregariousness and container size, and settlement promoters and inhibitors. Assays with 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 40 cyprids in containers with a log range of surface area to volume ratios were conducted in a fully factorial design. Assays with the same range of cyprid numbers and six concentrations of the settlement promoter 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine

Effect of list errors on the estimation of population size.

In many situations, it is possible to estimate the size of a closed population if some members of the population are recorded on one or more administrative lists. An important example is estimating the prevalence of a disease, where some members of the disease population may be recorded on lists such as disease registries, hospital admission records, and general practitioner records. An incomplete contingency table is formed by matching the lists and the missing cell count estimated by prediction based on a fitted model, which assumes that the matching is done without error. In practice, match

Characteristics of garden dormice that contribute to their capacity as reservoirs for lyme disease spirochetes.

To describe the contribution of garden dormice to the epizootiology of Lyme disease, we compared their reservoir capacity for these pathogens to that of other sympatric hosts. Garden dormice are trapped most abundantly during early spring and again during midsummer, when their offspring forage. They are closely associated with moist forests. Garden dormice serve as hosts to nymphal ticks far more frequently than do other small mammals. Spirochetal infection is most prevalent in dormice, and many more larval ticks acquire infection in the course of feeding on these than on other rodents in the

Blood feeding and oviposition by Culex nigripalpus (Diptera: Culicidae) before, during, and after a widespread St. Louis encephalitis virus epidemic in Florida.

A widespread epidemic of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus was reported from central Florida from late July through December 1990 with 226 clinical cases and 11 deaths in humans. The abundance of blood-fed and gravid Culex nigripalpus Theobald females, the vector of SLE in Florida, was monitored at a resting site in Indian River County, FL, for the 3 yr before the epidemic, the epidemic year, and for 1 yr following the epidemic. Each study year was divided into four 3-mo periods that depict the subtropical SLE transmission cycle; a January-March maintenance phase, an April-June amplification

[Analysis of air pollution and prevalence rate of allergic diseases among elementary school children in Kawaguchi and Hatogaya city].

Kawaguchi and Hatogaya City are located on the northern edge of Tokyo. We analysed between air pollution and prevalence rate of allergic dis … d/or conjunctivitis and air pollution, but it was found that these diseases are slightly related to population density (p < 0.1, p < 0.01, p < 0.1, respectively).

Phlebotomine sandflies in a focus of visceral leishmaniasis in a border area of eastern Sudan.

A field study was carried out in eastern Sudan, near the Ethiopian border, to investigate the abundance, seasonality, man-biting behaviour and resting sites of sandflies in two areas where visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) is endemic: Umsalala village, Galabat Province; and the adjacent Dinder National Park (DNP), Dinder Province. Abundance of the different species was determined from collections made, using light and sticky-paper traps, in various habitats between November 1993 and February 1995. Man-biting sandflies were collected as they landed on human bait. The habitats investigated for

Seasonal dynamics of the Karoo paralysis tick (Ixodes rubicundus): a comparative study on Merino and Dorper sheep.

Karoo paralysis in South Africa is induced in livestock by feeding female Ixodes rubicundus ticks when infestation densities on hosts exceed certain critical levels. It has been shown previously that Angora goats are at a higher risk of being paralysed than Merino sheep, and such differences have been related to differences in feeding behaviour and spatial distribution of the two small-stock breeds. We hypothesized that differences in infestation densities with Karoo paralysis ticks would also occur between Merino and Dorper sheep breeds. A study was conducted under natural conditions in the s

Mapping the densities of malaria vectors within a single village.

Small scale spatial variation and temporal heterogeneity in mosquito densities can have important consequences for disease transmission, but the extreme variation which is observed in populations of malaria vectors makes it difficult to obtain good predictions of densities for short time periods over limited areas. We have applied Bayesian techniques derived for use in cancer epidemiology in order to map densities of Anopheles gambiae s.l. and A. funestus in a Tanzanian village where there is intense transmission of Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Estimates derived in this way should prove usef

Species composition and relative abundance of sand flies of the genus Lutzomyia (Diptera: Psychodidae) at an endemic focus of visceral leishmaniasis in Colombia.

Ecological studies on the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) were conducted during 1990-1993 at a small rural community in Colombia where American visceral leishmaniasis is endemic. Weekly sand fly collections were made from pigpens, houses, and natural resting sites, using hand-held aspirators, sticky (oiled) paper traps, and opossum-baited Disney traps. In total, 263,094 sand flies were collected; L. longipalpis predominated (86.1%), followed by L. trinidadensis (11.0%), L. cayennensis (2.7%), and 8 other Lutzomyia species. The species composition and sex ratio of these sand flies

[Epidemiology of human trypanosomiasis in the Luba focus, in Equatorial Guinea].

In Equatorial Guinea, the human trypanosomiasis, after an intensive surveillance beginning in the 30's, seemed to be controlled by the end of the 60's. A lack of surveillance provoked a surge of different foci, confirmed in 1982 by the spontaneous presentations of sick in the hospitals of the old foci. These processes have been observed in the Luba focus (ex San Carlos) on the island of Bioko (ex Fernando Poo). The situation was grave in 1985 and a survey was organized by the "Centro de Control de la Tripanosomiasis" (Ministerio de Sanidad de Guinea Ecuatorial--Agencia Española de Cooperación

Necator americanus infection: a longitudinal study of an urban area in Nigeria.

A longitudinal study was carried out in Owerri, capital of Imo State, Nigeria, to assess the pattern of Necator americanus infection during a 27-month period. The mean annual prevalence fell from 59.0% in 1978, to 55.5% in 1979 and 51.1% in 1980. The egg count (apparent intensity of infection) fell in a similar pattern. Maximum and minimum conversion rates were 55.2 and 13.7%, respectively, and conversion rates fell by approximately 20% between 1979 and 1980. The highest reversion rate was 55.0% between 1979 and 1980. The population density of available third-stage larvae fluctuated seasonally…

Parasite interactions in natural populations: insights from longitudinal data.

The physiological and immunological state of an animal can be influenced by current infections and infection history. Consequently, both ongoing and previous infections can affect host susceptibility to another parasite, the biology of the subsequent infection (e.g. infection length) and the impact of infection on host morbidity (pathology). In natural populations, most animals will be infected by a succession of different parasites throughout the course of their lives, with probably frequent concomitant infections. The relative timing of different infections experienced by a host (i.e. the se

Examining perceptions of rapid population growth in North and South Gondar zones, northwest Ethiopia.

Ethiopia is one of the most populous countries in Africa and ranks second only to Nigeria. Rapid population growth has hampered the country's development, making the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger difficult. This study which had two components--quantitative and qualitative--was aimed at exploring the perceptions of women and other social groups on the prevailing population pressures. The quantitative study involved 3,512 women aged 15-49 years. The qualitative study consisted of five focus-group discussions and six key-informant interviews. Over 90% of women (n = 3,512) who particip
