An exploratory study of physicians' familiarity, knowledge, and willingness to prescribe pre-exposure prophylaxis in the MENA region.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is among the most effective tools used for HIV prevention. Primary care providers (PCPs) play a crucial role in identifying people at risk and initiating care. There is a gap in research on PrEP use in the MENA region; this study aims to assess PCPs' knowledge, familiarity with PrEP and willingness to prescribe it. An online survey targeted PCPs and infectious disease (ID) specialists across the MENA region, with most responses coming from Lebanon. Data included demographics, practice characteristics, perceived knowledge, familiarity with PrEP, willingness to pr

HIV Physicians and Chronic Opioid Therapy: It's Time to Raise the Bar.

Clinical practice that utilizes chronic opioid therapy has been recognized as one major cause of the opioid crisis. Among patients living with HIV, the risks associated with chronic opioid therapy may be complicated by factors such as co-occurring mental health diagnoses, substance use, and economic marginalization. Improving opioid prescribing practices in HIV clinics requires attention to these and other characteristics common to HIV care. In the context of a randomized controlled trial testing an intervention to improve opioid prescribing practices in HIV outpatient clinics, we interviewed

Money, Meals, and Marketing in Medicine: A 13-Year Follow-Up Survey of Physicians.

Pharmaceutical company marketing to physicians is known to impact prescribing patterns. In 2011, we surveyed medical students and residents about physician/industry relationships. In 2024, we resurveyed the same participants to study changes in their behaviors over time and their current opinions of policies regulating interactions between physicians and industry. In both surveys, respondents were asked to report whether they had received gifts or financial support from industry or interacted with pharmaceutical representatives. We also asked which resources they used to learn about drugs. In

The Incremental Validity of Self-Report and Performance-Based Methods for Assessing Hostility to Predict Cardiovascular Disease in Physicians.

We evaluated the utility of an integrative, multimethod approach for assessing hostility-related constructs to predict premature cardiovascular disease (CVD) and premature coronary heart disease (CHD) using participants from the Johns Hopkins Precursors Study, which was designed to identify risk factors for heart disease. Participants were assessed at baseline while in medical school from 1946 to 1962 (M age = 24.6) and have been followed annually since then. Baseline assessment included individually administered Rorschach protocols (N = 416) scored for aggressive imagery (i.e., Aggressive Con

Country differences in patient characteristics and treatment in schizophrenia: data from a physician-based survey in Europe.

Schizophrenia is a frequent psychiatric disorder whose prevalence appears to be relatively stable across different patient groups. However, attitudes to care and resources devoted to mental health care may differ between countries. The objective of this analysis was to compare sociodemographic and psychopathological features of patients, antipsychotic treatment and frequency of hospitalisation between four European countries (Germany, Greece, Italy and Spain) collected as part of a large survey of the characteristics of patients with schizophrenia. The survey was conducted by structured interv

HIV testing practices of Zimbabwean physicians and their perspectives on the future use of rapid on-site tests.

To improve HIV testing procedures, rapid on-site HIV tests have been introduced in Zimbabwe. At present, little is known about physicians' perspectives on the potential use of rapid tests in their clinics or about their current laboratory-based testing practices. In a sample of 63 general practitioners in Harare, this study found physicians were generally testing individuals, not couples, and an important reason for suggesting a patient be tested was medical symptoms; frequent reasons for patients requesting the test were insurance purposes, being about to get married or having suspicions abou

Reducing inappropriate medical practices: a scenario-based experiment on fiduciary duty and audit enforcement in China's healthcare sector.

BACKGROUND: China's recent anti-corruption efforts in the healthcare sector have focused on senior hospital administrators and on procurement processes for pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, with comparatively little attention paid to frontline clinical physicians. Yet the everyday practices of frontline physicians-including excessive testing, overtreatment, and overprescription-constitute a major source of cost inflation and have contributed to a substantial erosion of patient trust. Drawing on principal-agent theory and on responsive regulation theory, this study examines whether introduc

Sickness certification as a complex professional and collaborative activity--a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Physicians have an important but problematic task to issue sickness certifications. A manifold of studies have identified a wide spectrum of medical and insurance-related problems in sickness certification. Despite educational efforts aiming to improve physicians' knowledge of social insurance medicine there are no signs of reduction of these problems. We hypothesised that the quality deficits is not only due to lack of knowledge among issuing physicians. The aim of the study was to explore physicians' challenges when handling sickness certification in relation to their professiona

3D interactive radiology reports: referring physicians' acceptance of artificial intelligence varies across practice settings.

INTRODUCTION: A 3D interactive report is a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) tool that integrates a patient's imaging history into an intuitive visualisation. Yet, despite the many potential benefits to patients, referring physicians, and the healthcare system, a substantial gap exists between such AI developments and their clinical implementation. The goal of this study was to evaluate physicians' attitudes towards AI and their readiness to implement new AI-technologies in different practice settings. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 15-question cross-sectional online survey addressing A

Trends in the prescription of constipation medications in Japan (fiscal years 2019-2023): A nationwide baseline study prior to the 2023 clinical guidelines.

Constipation is a common gastrointestinal disorder that markedly affects health and quality of life. In Japan, magnesium-based and contact laxatives have long been widely prescribed. Since the launch of lubiprostone in November 2012, several new agents with novel mechanisms have been introduced, and their use has increased. However, to our knowledge, no nationwide study has examined their use. This study aimed to analyze nationwide trends and regional differences in the prescription of medications for constipation. We used data from the Japanese National Health Insurance Claims and Specific He
