Fabrication of 3D Models for Microtia Reconstruction Using Smartphone-Based Technology.

OBJECTIVE: Microtia reconstruction is technically challenging due to the intricate contours of the ear. It is common practice to use a two-dimensional tracing of the patient's normal ear as a template for the reconstruction of the affected side. Recent advances in three-dimensional (3D) surface scanning and printing have expanded the ability to create surgical models preoperatively. This study aims to describe a simple and affordable process to fabricate patient-specific 3D ear models for use in the operating room. STUDY DESIGN: Applied basic research on a novel 3D optical scanning and fabric

The role of 3D simulation and osteotomy guides in improving surgical outcomes for complex spinal deformities: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Complex spinal deformities, characterized by rigidity and imbalance, pose significant surgical challenges due to difficulties in correction and associated neurological risks. Recent advances in 3D-printed osteotomy guides offer a promising approach to improve the precision of vertebral cutting. This study retrospectively compares the corrective outcomes of 3D simulation with freehand execution versus 3D simulation with guide-assisted execution. METHODS: A retrospective, non-randomized comparative study was conducted, in which 50 patients were initially screened, and 45 patients who

Three-dimensional planning to optimize individual implant shape and location in thyroplasty surgery: How I do it.

BACKGROUND: Although optimal voice outcomes in thyroplasty rely on precise targeting the affected vocal cord, the current surgical practice does not take the significant anatomical variations in this region into account. METHOD: A 3D virtual surgical planning is presented to complement the surgical technique with a patient-specific approach. This technique utilizes preoperative CT imaging of the thyroid cartilage to plan the optimal implant shape and target location. Patient specific 3D printed guides are used intraoperatively to guide the surgery for the optimal position of the implant. CON

Contactless surface registration of featureless anatomy using structured light camera: application to fibula navigation in mandible reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Mandibular reconstruction using fibula free flap is a challenging surgical procedure. To assist osteotomies, computer-assisted surgery (CAS) can be used. Nevertheless, precise registration is required and often necessitates anchored markers that disturb the patient and clinical flow. This work proposes a new contactless surface-based method adapted to featureless anatomies such as fibula to achieve a fast, precise, and reproducible registration. METHODS: Preoperatively, a CT-scan of the patient is realized and osteotomies are virtually planned. During surgery, a structured light came

Imaging for Acute and Chronic Scaphoid Fractures.

The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured bone in the wrist but 20% to 40% of scaphoid fractures are radiographically occult. Delayed or misdiagnosis can have significant consequences with late complications such as nonunion, malunion, or the development of avascular necrosis in the proximal pole. After initial negative radiographs, advanced cross-sectional imaging, including CT and MRI, ultimately may provide more accurate and rapid diagnosis than conventional radiography. With chronic fractures, the preferred modality depends on the clinical question. New techniques are evolving that will

Development and evaluation of a craniocerebral model with tactile-realistic feature and intracranial pressure for neurosurgical training.

OBJECTIVE: In this article, a craniocerebral model is introduced for neurosurgical training, which is patient-specific, tactile-realistic, and with adjustable intracranial pressure. METHODS: The patient-specific feature is achieved by modeling from CT scans and magnetic resonance images (MRI). The brain tissue model is built by the hydrogel casting technique, while scalp, skull, vasculature, and lateral ventricles are all-in-one fabricated by three-dimensional (3D) printing. A closed-loop system is integrated to monitor and control the intracranial pressure. 3D measurements, mechanical tests,

Use of Patient-Specific Instrumentation (PSI) for glenoid component positioning in shoulder arthroplasty. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (TSA) anatomical, reverse or both is an increasingly popular procedure but the glenoid component is still a weak element, accounting for 30-50% of mechanical complications and contributing to the revision burden. Component mal-positioning is one of the main aetiological factors in glenoid failure and thus Patient-Specific Instrumentation (PSI) has been introduced in an effort to optimise implant placement. The aim of this systematic literature review and meta-analysis is to compare the success of PSI and Standard Instrumentation (STDI) methods in repro

BACKGROUND: The techniques and applications of 3-dimensional (3D) printing have progressed at a fast pace. In the last 10 years, there has been significant progress in applying this technology to medical applications. We present a case of osteogenesis imperfecta in which treatment was aided by prospectively using patient-specific, anatomically accurate 3D prints of the calvaria. The patient-specific, anatomically accurate 3D prints were used in the clinic and in the operating room to augment patient education, improve surgical decision making, and enhance preoperative planning. A Comprehensive Review of 3D Imaging and Printing in Proximal Humerus Fractures and Sequelae.

UNLABELLED: Proximal humerus fractures are common and complex; despite advances, malunion, nonunion, and osteonecrosis remain concerns. Three-dimensional (3D) imaging/printing has emerged to improve classification, planning, and execution, especially in displaced patterns. METHODS: Multiple databases have been searched using predefined terms ("proximal humerus fractures/sequelae", "three-dimensional", and "3D printing"). Inclusion criteria targeted human longitudinal studies (retrospective/prospective) on 3D-assisted fracture or sequela management; expert opinion, prior reviews, and letters t

Symptomatic malunion after midshaft clavicle fracture in an adolescent patient: a case report of surgical deformity correction using a 3D printed model.

A 14-year-old boy underwent surgery for symptomatic malunion of the clavicle. This complication, which is uncommon in adults and adolescents, occurred after a displaced midshaft clavicle fracture that had been treated conservatively. Surgery may be considered if functional impairment, pain, weakness, fatigability and neurological symptoms persist in the presence of significant clavicular deformity. Our case was unusual because the patient had a symptomatic malunion and lost range of movement of his shoulder despite a minor degree of clavicular shortening. We adopted an approach used in lower l

Overview of In-Hospital 3D Printing and Practical Applications in Hand Surgery.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing is spreading in hand surgery. There is an increasing number of practical applications like the training of junior hand surgeons, patient education, preoperative planning, and 3D printing of customized casts, customized surgical guides, implants, and prostheses. Some high-quality studies highlight the value for surgeons, but there is still a lack of high-level evidence for improved clinical endpoints and hence actual impact on the patient's outcome. This article provides an overview over the latest applications of 3D printing in hand surgery and practical experie

MR-based Bony 3D models enable radiation-free preoperative patient-specific analysis and 3D printing for SCFE patients.

OBJECTIVES: Slipped capital femoral epiphyses (SCFE) is a common pediatric hip disease with the risk of osteoarthritis and impingement deformities, and 3D models could be useful for patient-specific analysis. Therefore, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) bone segmentation and feasibility of 3D printing and of 3D ROM simulation using MRI-based 3D models were investigated. METHODS: A retrospective study involving 22 symptomatic patients (22 hips) with SCFE was performed. All patients underwent preoperative hip MR with pelvic coronal high-resolution images (T1 images). Slice thickness was 0.8-1.2

Comprehensive RGBD-based shoulder kinematics using markerless anatomical landmarks detection and a 3D-printed acromial cluster during hand-cycling.

Biomechanical biofeedback has the potential to enhance rehabilitation by providing clinicians with objective evaluation of patient performances. As feedback systems often depend on expensive and sophisticated motion capture technologies, researchers explore computer vision-based alternatives. Existing methods suffer from substantial joint angle errors, particularly in the upper limb, and neglect the scapular movements. In this paper, we present a method based on a single front-facing RGB-D camera that automatically detects 3D anatomical landmark locations using depth information. We also use a

Development of a low cell density model for examining astrocyte reaction to 3D suspension using AVIFJ.

Alternating viscous and inertial force jetting (AVIFJ) was used to print single-cells and position small numbers of cells precisely. The effect of nozzle size on single-cell encapsulation and droplet spacing ability was tested using astrocytes. Astrocytes were patterned in Matrigel and examined for 7 d after printing to assess viability and their response to being suspended in 3D at low cell density. The results showed AVIFJ had a single-cell printing efficiency around 30% using nozzles with outer diameters (ODs) of 63μm and 96μm at a 300 000 cells ml-1concentration, and 30% for 143µm and 195µ
