Integration of impulsivity and positive mood to predict risky behavior: development and validation of a measure of positive urgency.

In 3 studies, the authors developed and began to validate a measure of the propensity to act rashly in response to positive affective states (positive urgency). In Study 1, they developed a content-valid 14-item scale, showed that the measure was unidimensional, and showed that positive urgency was distinct from impulsivity-like constructs identified in 2 models of impulsive behavior. In Study 2, they showed that positive urgency explained variance in risky behavior not explained by measures of other impulsivity-like constructs, differentially explained positive mood-based risky behavior, diff

Personality and problem gambling: a prospective study of a birth cohort of young adults.

CONTEXT: Individual differences in dimensions of personality may play an important role in explaining risk for disordered gambling behavior as well as the comorbidity between disordered gambling behavior and other substance-related addictive disorders. OBJECTIVES: To identify the personality correlates of problem gambling in a representative non-treatment-seeking sample, as well as to determine whether these are similar to the personality correlates of other substance-related addictive disorders and whether individual differences in personality might account for the comorbidity between disord

Parental modeling, attachment, and supervision as moderators of adolescent gambling.

Utilizing Jessor's Problem Behavior Theory as a theoretical foundation, 116 male and female students in grades 9-12 (mean age 16.8) from a Midwestern urban high school were surveyed to determine the prevalence and relationship among gambling behavior and parental and peer influences. To measure these variables, the following instruments were used: The SOGS-RA, the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment-Parent Scale, and The Alabama Parenting Questionnaire-Parental Monitoring and Supervision Scale. Almost all of the students (91%) reported gambling at least once in their lifetime while 36.2% r…

Severe aggression and related conduct problems among runaway and homeless adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The study assessed the prevalence of severe aggressive behavior and conduct disorder in a population of runaway and homeless adolescents and examined relationships between aggression, conduct disorder, other problem behaviors, and background characteristics. METHODS: A total of 219 runaway and homeless youths recruited through a urban drop-in center were surveyed using the Adolescent Health Survey, a questionnaire about background and mental health experiences, and the revised version of the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children. RESULTS: More than half of study participants …

Gambling formats, involvement, and problem gambling: which types of gambling are more risky?

BACKGROUND: The recognition of problem gambling as a public health issue has increased as the availability of gambling expands. Research has found that some formats of gambling are more closely linked to problem gambling than others. Conflicting evidence, however, has emerged, suggesting that the most important consideration is involvement (i.e., number of gambling formats an individual participates in). This debate has important implications for the regulation of gambling formats and for the allocation of problem gambling prevention and treatment services. METHOD: Analyses utilized the Basel

Neurodevelopment, impulsivity, and adolescent gambling.

The prevalence of problem and pathological gambling in adolescence and young adulthood has been found to be two- to fourfold higher than in adulthood. Given that these high rates might predict future increases across all age groups, it is important to explore the causes of the elevated rates of problem and pathological gambling among youths. This article reviews evidence for a neurobiological basis for adolescent vulnerability to problem and pathological gambling behaviors. We propose that a common trait motif of impulsivity might underlie phenomenology of pathological gambling, commonly comor

Behaviours That Challenge in Special Schools: Heterogeneity of Profiles Among Students With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Implications for Educational Support.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine the types and frequency of challenging behaviours (CB) among students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in special education schools and identify profiles among them. METHODS: Data were collected from 239 special school staff members, who reported information on 635 students via an online survey. A multilevel latent class analysis was used to identify subgroups of students based on the type and frequency of CB while controlling for respondent nesting. RESULTS: According to respondents, among students in their classrooms (M = 6.02, SD = 2

Behavioral parent training for disruptive behaviors in school-age children with autism: Secondary outcomes of a randomized controlled trial.

Children with autism often show disruptive behavior problems, which may cause significant impairment. Behavioral parent training is an effective intervention for other children with disruptive behavior, but research in children with autism is relatively scarce. We here report the secondary outcomes of a three-arm randomized controlled trial, comparing face-to-face and blended parent training to a waitlist control condition for children with autism and disruptive behavior. We previously found that face-to-face, but not blended parent training, relative to waitlist control, significantly improve

A longitudinal path model examining the transactional nature of parenting and child externalizing behaviors in a large, sociodemographically diverse sample.

Children's externalizing behaviors are associated with impairments across the lifespan. Developmental psychopathology theories propose transactional (bidirectional) associations between child externalizing behaviors and parenting during childhood and adolescence. Yet, these foundational relations in early childhood are not well-studied. Utilizing a large, mixed-sex sample, we examined the reciprocal nature of parenting and child externalizing behaviors across early childhood using robust repeated-measures models. Repeated measures data were drawn from a socioeconomically diverse, longitudinal

Latent Class Analysis of Prenatal Substance Exposure and Child Behavioral Outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: To predict behavioral disruptions in middle childhood, we identified latent classes of prenatal substance use. STUDY DESIGN: As … CONCLUSIONS: The differences in prenatal polysubstance use may increase risk for specific childhood problem behaviors; however, child outcomes appeared comparably adverse for both licit and illicit polysubstance exposure. We highlight the need for similar multicohort, large-scale studies to examine childhood outcomes based on prenatal substance use profiles.

Challenging behaviors in adults with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability: A differential analysis from a transdiagnostic approach.

This study aimed at analyzing the differences in challenging behaviors between adults with intellectual disability and ASD and those who only had intellectual disability, as well as to explore associations between transdiagnostic and clinical variables to these differences. Therapists and educators of 163 adults with intellectual disability (83 with additional ASD diagnosis) completed the test battery. Mean difference analysis and univariate analyses of covariance were performed to determine the impact of clinical variables and transdiagnostic variables on the frequency and severity of challen

Externalizing Behaviors in Preschool-Aged Children With Cochlear Implants.

PURPOSE: Deaf children with cochlear implants (CIs) experience challenges in early development of hearing and language skills that may place them at risk for externalizing behavior problems, such as aggression, hyperactivity-impulsivity, and oppositional behavior. This study is a longitudinal investigation of (a) between-groups differences in externalizing behavior problems between preschool-aged children with CIs and normal-hearing (NH) peers, and (b) within-group factors that may explain variability in externalizing problems within the sample of CI users. METHOD: Parents of 26 children with

Sex-specific effects of birth weight on longitudinal behavioural outcomes in children and adolescents: findings from the raine study.

Previous cross-sectional studies suggest that birth weight (BW) is associated with aggression-, social- and attention problems differently in boys and girls. We sought to test if these differences could be confirmed in a longitudinal study. The 1989 Raine Study provided prospectively collected data on perinatal variables and repeated child behaviour checklist assessments from ages 5 to 17. Linear mixed effects models provided crude and adjusted relationships between BW and childhood behaviour at a conservative significance threshold using prenatal maternal covariables in adjusted models. Psychosocial factors and high-risk sexual behavior: race differences among urban adolescents.

Adolescence is a period of sexual experimentation. We examined psychosocial predictors of high-risk sexual behavior and condom use. The sample included 824 ninth-graders, most of whom are African American. We conducted separate analyses for whites and African Americans. Predictors included alcohol and substance use, delinquency, prosocial behaviors, and family and peer influences. We found that problem behaviors predicted high-risk sexual behavior, but the effects were stronger for white youth. We also found that friends' behaviors were more predictive than family influences, except for family…

Associated Mechanisms of Goal Directed Behavior in Infants and Young Children with Down Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Early goal-directed behavior is an important area of cognitive development for long-term outcomes in typical development yet is substantially disrupted in Down syndrome (DS). While motor abilities, visual attention, and haptic perception are established associated mechanisms of early goal-directed behavior in typical development, there has been minimal investigation into these as mechanisms of goal-directed behavior in children with DS. The aim of the present study was to examine fine motor, gross motor, visual attention, and haptic perception as associated mechanisms of two types

Inattention/hyperactivity and aggression from early childhood to adolescence: heterogeneity of trajectories and differential influence of family environment characteristics.

Inattention/hyperactivity and aggressive behavior problems were measured in 335 children from school entry throughout adolescence, at 3-year intervals. Children were participants in a high-risk prospective study of substance use disorders and comorbid problems. A parallel process latent growth model found aggressive behavior decreasing throughout childhood and adolescence, whereas inattentive/hyperactive behavior levels were constant. Growth mixture modeling, in which developmental trajectories are statistically classified, found two classes for inattention/hyperactivity and two for aggressive

Impact of eye movements and facial expressions on social performance during a collaborative problem-solving task.

Social performance is associated with producing good relationships in social communication. In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on the importance of collaborative problem- solving in social communication. Aiming to enhance collaborative problem-solving, we investigated the characteristics of behavioral signals that impact social performance. In this paper, we analyzed the eye movements and facial expressions of pairs of participants working on a collaborative problem-solving task online. Our eye movement analysis showed that the lower the percentage of looking at the conversatio

Treating self-harm behaviors in prisons: implementation of the STEPPS program.

BACKGROUND: Improving mental health within correctional facilities, specifically to address self-harm behaviors, is a crucial endeavor. However, significant challenges arise when implementing evidence-based programs within this complex setting. Despite these hurdles, the Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) program has garnered recognition, notably in the United States, for its efficacy in tackling such issues. This study aimed to examine inmate profiles in prisons located in Catalonia, Spain, and to investigate the STEPPS program's effectiveness and imple
