Atypical movement performance and sensory integration in Asperger's syndrome.

The aims of this study were to investigate whether individuals with AS have impaired motor abilities and sensorimotor processing and whether these impairments were age-related. Sensorimotor abilities were examined using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2, and the Sensory Integration Praxis Test. Fifty boys with AS aged 7-14 years old were compared with typically developing boys. Overall, children with AS showed significant impairment of movement performance as well as proprioceptive and vestibular processing. There were no interaction effects of age and clinical group on level of p

Hierarchy of different muscles in postural control.

The effects of muscle spindle activation on different postural muscles were examined in eight volunteers, using a force platform technique. Small electrical vibrators were placed symmetrically over the muscles concerned and the effects of vibration frequencies of 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 Hz were studied at a constant amplitude of 0.4 mm (peak-to-peak). Significant responses were observed in most muscles. The responses were observed (in maximum response order) from: the neck, triceps surae, gluteus, abdominal, hamstring, quadriceps, lumbar and tibialis anterior muscles. The response direction did

A sensory-integrative approach to familial dysautonomia.

Familial dysautonomia, a relatively rare hereditary condition, consists of a baffling array of nervous system malfunctions that seriously disturb the lives of the young victims and their families. Since several of the deficits can be identified as sensory-integrative and as such have been successfully treated in other contexts, it is suggested that sensory integration therapy may benefit these children. Results of a ten-month-old Isralei child appear to support this conjecture and suggest further exploration of the sensory integration approach in evaluation and treatment of dysautonomia and re

A Case of Ganglionopathy Presenting with Hyperkinetic Movements.

BACKGROUND: Sensory ganglionopathy is a rare, often underrecognized neurological manifestation of Sjogren's disease, presenting with non-length-dependent sensory symptoms that may mimic other neuropathies. CASE REPORT: We report a case of Sjogren's-related sensory ganglionopathy presenting as severe sensory ataxia and pseudoathetosis. A 73-year-old man developed involuntary movements, sensory loss, and gait ataxia. Exam showed absent proprioception, areflexia, and worsening ataxia with eye closure. MRI revealed degenerative spine disease; EMG showed demyelinating and axonal polyneuropathy. CS…

Arthroscopic Posterior Subtalar Arthrodesis: Surgical Technique.

Surgical fusion of the subtalar joint is a procedure indicated to alleviate pain of subtalar origin, such as in post-traumatic osteoarthritis, adult-acquired flatfoot deformity, and other disorders. Open subtalar arthrodesis has been performed with predictable results, but concerns exist regarding injury to proprioception and local vascularity due to wide surgical dissection. Minimally invasive techniques try to improve results by avoiding these issues but have a reputation for being technically demanding. We describe the surgical technique for arthroscopic subtalar arthrodesis, which has prov…

Lateral ankle sprains. Part II: Acute and chronic treatment.

This paper reviews the treatment alternatives for acute and chronic lateral ankle ligament sprains. Inadequately treated ankle sprains can result in chronic lateral ankle instability, disabling pain, and the early onset of osteoarthritis. There are a multitude of reconstructive techniques used for chronic lateral ankle instability. Morbidity associated with present techniques includes loss of proprioception, stiffness following cast immobilization, loss of subtalar motion, loss of internal rotation of the talus during ankle plantar flexion, and recurrent instability. In addition, this paper re…

[Overuse syndrome in ballet: study of the effect of a tape bandage of the upper ankle joint with motion analysis].

In six ballet dancers with overuse syndromes of the foot a study on the effect of taping on stabilisation, proprioception and muscular activity was performed. By using synchronous surface electromyography and 3-dimensional motion analysis three standard ballet positions without and with applied tape were performed. Muscular activities of pronator muscles (peroneus longus) and supinator muscles (tibialis posterior) were recorded. EMG measurements showed significant differences between patients with stable or unstable ankles and painful or pain-free feet. Applying tape led to significant changes…

[Kinetoses].

Motion sickness is a well known nausea and vomiting syndrome whose physical signs occur during travel by sea, automobile, airplane, and space. This review describes current concepts concerning the aetiology, nature and therapy of this common phenomenon. Motion sickness involve a neural mismatch or confusion between the vestibular, visual, and proprioceptive systems. Therapy is directed towards decreasing conflicting sensory input, controlling nausea, and speeding the process of adaptation.

Individualized Virtual Angle Offset Training for Patients with Stroke.

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term sensorimotor disability, with upper limb deficits often persisting into the chronic stage. For many patients with stroke, the active muscle control zone, i.e., the angular range of typical muscle activation patterns, is reduced, leading to abnormal patterns and spasticity. When the displayed angle in a virtual environment is smaller than the actual angle, participants may implicitly perceive that their arm remains within the control zone. This discrepancy between visual and proprioceptive information may promote visuo-proprioceptive recalibration and sens

Investigating the Speed and Accuracy of Human Movement Corrections to Visual, Somatosensory, and Tactile Perturbations: Evidence for Distinct Sensorimotor Processes.

Humans can adapt their movements in response to expected and unexpected perturbations. The speed and accuracy of these movement corrections may depend on the type of sensory information driving the perception of these perturbations. While previous research has indicated that corrections based on somatosensory information, comprised of proprioceptive and tactile inputs, are faster than corrections based on visual information, other studies have found comparable correction speeds in response to visual and tactile inputs. The purpose of this study was to systematically investigate the latencies (

[Agonist-antagonist myoneural interface (AMI) : Innovative treatment option for lower limb amputees?].

The agonist-antagonist myoneural interface (AMI) is an innovative approach to restoring proprioception and achieving more intuitive motor control following limb loss. This cutting-edge technique replicates the natural biomechanical relationship between agonist and antagonist muscles, enabling bidirectional communication between a prosthesis and the user's peripheral nervous system. Through the transposition of neurovascularly pedicled agonist-antagonist muscle pairs, which are reconnected via an adapted tendon suture and positioned within a gliding mechanism, AMI generates proprioceptive feedb…

Integrative Postural Rehabilitation for Kyphotic Deformity in a Patient with Parkinson's Disease: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Spinal deformities, particularly thoracolumbar kyphosis, affect approximately one-third of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and significantly impair their quality of life and mobility. Conventional treatments, including levodopa and surgical interventions, have limited efficacy, necessitating alternative therapies. In this report, a 76-year-old woman with PD and severe thoracolumbar kyphosis (TK: 77.7°; sagittal vertical axis [SVA]: 95.55 mm) experienced postural instability and gait impairment. She underwent integrative postural rehabilitation (acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, Chuna spina

Can we tell where our bodies end and the external world begins? Evidence for precise three-dimensional internal body models.

Distinguishing our body from the external world is crucial for self-perception and environmental interaction. Yet, the accuracy with which we perceive this boundary remains underexplored. Here, we developed a psychophysical protocol to assess how accurately individuals perceive their body boundaries. Participants were asked whether the midpoint between two tactile stimuli was inside or outside their perceived body boundary. Three-dimensional scans provided objective anatomical boundaries, allowing psychometric functions to be fitted. Results revealed remarkable overall precision, often within

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation over human motor cortex on cognitive-motor and sensory-motor functions.

The primary motor cortex (M1) is broadly acknowledged for its crucial role in executing voluntary movements. Yet, its contributions to cognitive and sensory functions remain largely unexplored. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive neurostimulation method that can modify brain activity, thereby enabling the establishment of a causal link between M1 activity and behavior. This study aimed to investigate the online effects of tDCS over M1 on cognitive-motor and sensory-motor functions. Sixty-four healthy participants underwent either anodal or sham tDCS while concurrent

Lumbar joint position sense measurement of patients with low back pain.

Lumbar position sense can be assessed by measurement instruments including the goniometer, isokinetic dynamometry, and electronic motion monitoring equipment, which have demonstrated relatively high reliability. This literature provides a comprehensive overview of influencing factors of lumbar position sense measurement, including repositioning method, fatigue degree, and posture during the reposition. It highlights the significant role of muscle proprioception, which contributes to greater accuracy in active reposition compared to passive reposition. The differences in lumbar position sense w…

Should We Void Lactate in the Pathophysiology of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness? Not So Fast! Let's See a Neurocentric View!

The pathophysiology of delayed onset muscle soreness is not entirely known. It seems to be a simple, exercise-induced delayed pain condition … er hyperexcitation. However, excessive acidosis and lactate could eventually contribute to impaired proprioception and increased nociception under pathological condition. Furthermore, lactate could also contribute to the secondary damage phase of delayed onset muscle soreness in the extrafusal space, primarily by potentiating the role of bradykinin. After all, n …
