[A case of thyrotoxic myopathy with generalized body muscular atrophy including the tongue muscle, lacking physical manifestations of Basedow disease].

We report a 74-year-old man with a 2-year history of proximal limb pain, body weight loss of 15 kg, and muscle weakness. Muscle atrophy was … elevated. Despite the severe muscle atrophy, the serum CK level was normal. A biopsy from the left quadriceps muscle revealed Type 1 fibers atrophy. Administration of anti-thyroid drugs normalized his thyroid function and the level of soluble IL-2 receptor, leading to improvement of the generalized muscle atrophy.

Quantitative sonographic evaluation of muscle thickness and fasciculation prevalence in healthy subjects.

BACKGROUND: In the current study, we aimed to determine normative values for muscle thickness and fasciculation prevalence in healthy subjects. METHODS: We performed a prospective study from October to December 2018 in 65 healthy subjects. All subjects underwent quantitative sonographic evaluation of muscle thickness and fasciculation prevalence in the following 8 muscles: Biceps brachii, abductor pollicis brevis, first dorsal interosseous, abductor digiti minimi, quadriceps, tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum brevis, and abductor hallucis brevis. RESULTS: Subject ages ranged from 21 to 8

Chronic quadriceps tendon rupture: quadriceps tendon reconstruction using ipsilateral semitendinosus tendon graft.

Ruptures of the quadriceps tendon (QTRs) are uncommon. If the rupture is not diagnosed, chronic ruptures may develop. Re-ruptures of the quadriceps tendon are rare. Surgery is challenging because of tendon retraction, atrophy and poor quality of the remaining tissue. Multiple surgical techniques have been described. We propose a novel technique in which the quadriceps tendon is reconstructed using the ipsilateral semitendinosus tendon.

Magnetic resonance imaging findings of the lower limb muscles in anti-mitochondrial M2 antibody-positive myositis.

Anti-mitochondrial M2 antibody (AMA-M2)-positive myositis is an idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM). Of all patients with myositis, 2.5-19.5% have AMA-M2 antibodies. However, the detailed distribution of muscles affected in AMA-positive myositis is unknown. Therefore, we examined lower muscle magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of patients with AMA-positive myositis. Among the 63 patients with IIM at our institute, 5 (7.9%) were positive for AMA-M2 antibodies. However, one was also positive for anti-Jo1 antibodies; therefore, four patients were finally participated in this study. All

Partial Delaminated Quadriceps Tendon Rupture: A Case Report.

CASE: We present a case of a 41-year-old male bodybuilder with a partial delaminated quadriceps tendon rupture after a traumatic injury. Partial quadriceps tendon tears are rare overall and usually are treated nonoperatively with conservative management depending on the patient's limitations. He was found to have an intact superficial quadriceps tendon with a partial thickness tear of the vastus intermedius and delamination of the undersurface quadriceps tendon precluding active knee extension. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, there has never been a reported partial quadriceps tendon tear with d

Complex ruptures of the quadriceps tendon: a systematic review of surgical procedures and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ruptures, ruptures following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), and re-ruptures of the quadriceps tendon (QT) are rare. A systematic review of the current literature was conducted on their treatment and outcome to provide evidence-based indications for their management. METHODS: We searched published articles in English on chronic ruptures of QT, QT ruptures that occurred after TKA, and re-ruptures in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar up to January 2021. Twenty-five articles were included following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA

A new clinical test in diagnosing quadriceps tendon rupture.

INTRODUCTION: Extensor mechanism ruptures might be easily overlooked and misdiagnosed, and delayed diagnosis of quadriceps tendon rupture is frequent. However, the literature recommends early surgical repair within 72 h. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This paper describes a new simple clinical diagnostic test that directly evaluates the integrity of the distal 5 cm of the quadriceps tendon itself. It consists of inserting a needle in the tendon, proximal to the suspected rupture and mobilising the knee joint. RESULTS: The suspected ruptured quadriceps tendons with a positive 'needle' diagnostic test

Subsequent Injury Risk After Return-to-Play From Lower-Extremity Muscle Injuries in Professional Male Football (Soccer).

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the upper extremity account for nearly half of the overall injury burden in professional football (soccer), with incidence rates differing across major muscle groups under both acute and overuse conditions. Importantly, they are commonly associated with an increased susceptibility to subsequent injury, especially in the weeks after return to play (RTP). However, the specific post-RTP risk trajectories after different lower-extremity muscle injuries remain insufficiently characterized. PURPOSE: To investigate the risk trajectory for noncontact subsequent injury after re

Muscle and tendon morphology of a world strongman and deadlift champion.

This study compared the muscle and tendon morphology of an extraordinarily strong individual, a World's Strongest Man and deadlift champion (WSM), with that of various other athletic, trained, and untrained populations. The WSM completed the following: 1) 3.0-T MRI scans, to determine the volume of 22 individual lower limb muscles, 5 functional muscle groups, patellar tendon (PT) cross-sectional area (CSA), and PT moment arm; and 2) countermovement jumps (CMJ) and isometric midthigh pull (IMTP) contractions. The WSM was compared with previously assessed groups from our laboratory (muscle and t

Regulation of Proinflammatory Enzymes by Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Gamma in Astroglia Infected with Toxoplasma gondii.

Background. We evaluated the usefulness of tensometric examination of the quadriceps as a means of assessing the pain threshold for the subcartilage layer in the patellofemoral joint and the knee joint. Material and methods. Our study, carried out from 2000 to 2003, included 131 patients, 77 men and 54 women, age 12-52. The examination results were compared with those for the unaffected leg. After each examination a new level of exercise workload was established, always just below the pain threshold. Examinations were repeated after one, three and six months. Results. The level of the pain thr

Hierarchy of different muscles in postural control.

The effects of muscle spindle activation on different postural muscles were examined in eight volunteers, using a force platform technique. Small electrical vibrators were placed symmetrically over the muscles concerned and the effects of vibration frequencies of 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 Hz were studied at a constant amplitude of 0.4 mm (peak-to-peak). Significant responses were observed in most muscles. The responses were observed (in maximum response order) from: the neck, triceps surae, gluteus, abdominal, hamstring, quadriceps, lumbar and tibialis anterior muscles. The response direction did

Physiotherapy Protocol for Postoperative Intraosseous Rosai-Dorfman Disease of the Distal Femur: A Case Report.

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare, benign, non-neoplastic histiocytic proliferative disorder. Involvement of the distal femur with intra-articular extension is uncommon and can pose diagnostic challenges. Physiotherapy plays a critical role in postoperative recovery; however, structured rehabilitation guidelines for such cases remain limited in the literature. This case report describes a rare presentation of intraosseous RDD and highlights the clinical outcomes of a phased, impairment-based physiotherapy protocol following surgical excision and bone grafting. The patient presented with gr
