Effect of Repair Gene Polymorphism on the Risk of Malignant Neoplasm Development after Chronic Radiation Exposure.

UNLABELLED: The efficiency of DNA integrity repair processes after radiation exposure may depend on hereditary variations of repair genes caused by single nucleotide polymorphisms. Disturbances or even failure of repair processes trigger a chain of reactions leading to genome instability and oncogenic transformation of the cell. OBJECTIVE: : To investigate the association of single nucleotide polymorphism in genes of nucleotide excision repair (ERCC2 rs13 181, XPC rs2 228 001), AP site repair (APEX rs1 130 409), homologous recombination (XRCC3 rs861 539), single-strand DNA break repair (XRCC1

An Assessment of Effective Radiation Dose When Utilizing the Illumisite System for Evaluation of Peripheral Pulmonary Lesions.

BACKGROUND: Electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy (ENB) is an established modality for performing bronchoscopic biopsies of peripheral pulmonary lesions (PPLs). Although prior versions have been limited by computed tomography (CT) to body divergence (CTBD), the advent of digital fluoroscopic tomosynthesis with continuous real-time guidance with the Illumisite system may help to overcome CTBD. This enhanced visualization, however, will require additional radiation exposure to perform the 50-degree fluoroscopic sweep around the PPL, but data are lacking on the additional amount. The primary ob

Effects of solar radiations on stratum corneum hydration: Part II, protective action of solar filters.

The skin surface lipids (SSLs) film, composed of sebum and keratinocyte membrane lipids, is crucial to the barrier function of the stratum corneum (SC). The first part of this study investigated the impact of solar radiation on the SC based on a novel hydration and dehydration approach using Raman spectroscopy. The SSLs were found to absorb solar light, and thus participate to the protection of the skin surface. However, the protective function of the SSLs may be limited and is dependent to the heterogenous distribution of SSLs over the body surface. To ensure comprehensive protection, synergi

Effect of Radiological Tumor Thickness on Prognosis of Early Glottic-Squamous Cell Carcinoma Treated With Radiation.

OBJECTIVES: Tumor depth of invasion is a known prognostic factor in several head and neck cancers, but data on early laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are sparse. In this study, we aim to determine whether radiological tumor thickness serves as a prognostic factor in early SCC of the glottis treated with radiation. METHODS: One hundred thirty-two adult patients (age >18 years) underwent pretreatment computed tomography (CT) and were treated with radiation for pathologically proven early stage (T1 or T2) glottic SCC. Thirty-eight were excluded because the tumor could not be correctly ide

Serum exosomal miRNA promote glioma progression by targeting SOS1 via abscopal effect of radiation.

INTRODUCTION: Local exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) can induce changes in biological processes in distant tissues and organs. Exosomes are nanoscale vesicles that transport biomolecules, mediate communication between cells and tissues, and can affect the abscopal effects of radiotherapy. METHODS: Mice were treated with 8.0 Gy doses of chest and abdomen IR, after which serum samples were taken 24 h after exposure. Their serum exosomes were then isolated via ultracentrifugation and the small RNA portions were extracted for sequencing and bioinformatic analysis. Exosomes were injected intrav

The effect of contact radiation shielding on breast dose during CT abdomen-pelvis: a phantom study.

This study aims to investigate if contact shielding reduces breast radiation dose during computed tomography (CT) abdomen-pelvis examinations using automatic tube current modulation to protect one of the four most radiosensitive organs during CT examinations. Dose measurements were taken with and without contact shielding across the anterior and lateral aspects of the breasts and with and without organ dose modulation (ODM) to quantify achievable dose reductions. Although there are no statistically significant findings, when comparing with and without shielding, the mean breast surface dose wa

Protective effect of paricalcitol in rat testicular damage induced by subchronic 1800 MHz radiofrequency radiation.

In the present study, the possible protective effects of paricalcitol (P) were investigated in testicular damage because of 1800 MHz radiofrequency radiation (RFR) exposure. Male Sprague Dawley rats 8-10 weeks old (n = 28) were randomly divided into four groups as control (C) (n = 7), RFR (n = 7, 1800 MHz RFR 1 h/day for 30 days), P (n = 7, 0.2 μg/kg paricalcitol, 3 times a week for 30 days), and RFR + P (n = 7, 1800 MHz RFR 1 h/day for 30 days +0.2 μg/kg paricalcitol, 3 times a week for 30 days). Testicular tissue was evaluated with histological and biochemical methods. No statistically signi

Clinicogenetic characteristics and the effect of radiation on the neural stem cell niche in subventricular zone-contacting glioblastoma.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neural stem cells (NSCs) in the subventricular zone (SVZ) are recognized as the cellular origin of glioblastoma (GBM) and a potential therapeutic target. However, the characteristics of SVZ contacting GBM (SVZ + GBM) and radiotherapeutic strategies for NSCs are still controversial. Here, we investigated the clinicogenetic features of SVZ + GBM and evaluated the dose effect of NSC irradiation depending on SVZ involvement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified 125 patients with GBM treated with surgery followed by chemoradiotherapy. The genomic profiles were obtained by n

[Research Progress on the Protective Effect of Intestinal Flora on
Radiation-induced Lung Injury in Thoracic Tumors].

Radiation therapy is one of the main treatment methods for patients with thoracic malignant tumors, which can effectively improve the survival rate of the patients. However, radiation therapy can also cause damage to normal tissues while treating tumors, leading to radiation-induced lung injury such as radiation pneumonia and pulmonary fibrosis. Radiation-induced lung injury is a complex pathophysiological process involving many factors, and its prevention and treatment is one of the difficult problems in the field of radiation medicine. Therefore, the search for sensitive predictors of radiat

A preliminary report assessing the feasibility and effectiveness of amniotic bladder therapy in patients with chronic radiation cystitis.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic radiation cystitis (CRC) can develop between 6 months and 20 years after radiation therapy that presents with symptoms of urinary frequency, urgency, bladder pain, and nocturia. Amniotic membrane (AM) is known to contain pro-regenerative properties and could thereby be a potential therapeutic modality for radiation-induced tissue injury of the bladder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CRC patients recalcitrant to previous treatments received amniotic bladder therapy (ABT) comprised of intra-detrusor injections of 100 mg micronized AM (Clarix Flo) diluted in 10 mL 0.9% preservative

DOSE-RATE EFFECT OF RADIATION ON RAT MAMMARY CARCINOGENESIS AND AN EMERGING ROLE FOR STEM CELL BIOLOGY.

The uncertain cancer risk of protracted radiation exposure at low dose rates is an important issue in radiological protection. Tissue stem/progenitor cells are a supposed origin of cancer and may contribute to the dose-rate effect on carcinogenesis. The authors have shown that female rats subjected to continuous whole body γ irradiation as juveniles or young adults have a notably reduced incidence of mammary cancer as compared with those irradiated acutely. Experiments using the mammosphere formation assay suggested the presence of radioresistant progenitor cells. Cell sorting indicated that b

The use of electronic conductivity devices can effectively reduce radiation exposure in vertebral body tethering.

INTRODUCTION: Vertebral body tethering (VBT) presents new challenges in respect to radiation exposure, as screws cannot be placed free-hand and the lateral positioning of the patients increases scattered radiation. To reduce radiation exposure, we introduced the use of electronic conductivity device (ECD). These are drilling probes send an audio signal when cortical bone is breached. Thus, anterior, bicortical screws can be placed without multiple fluoroscopic controls. ECD has been used for all VBT procedures at our institution starting April 2020. The aim of this study was to test the safety

Prognostic Effect of Systemic Therapy and Radiation Therapy in Stage I Nodal Marginal Zone Lymphoma.

PURPOSE: Nodal marginal zone lymphoma (NMZL) localized to a single lymphatic region (ie, stage I) is a relatively rare diagnosis. Current guidelines permit these patients to be either observed or treated with systemic therapy (ST), radiation therapy (RT), or both modalities. The prognostic effect of ST or RT compared with observation has not been established. The purpose of this study was to assess the prognostic effect of therapy in stage I NMZL. METHODS AND MATERIALS: The National Cancer Database was queried (2004-2018) for all patients with stage I NMZL. Patients were stratified based on t
