[Strategies for reduction of exposure to ionizing radiation in women undergone to uterine fibroid embolization].

PURPOSE: to determine the dose of ionizing radiation absorbed by the ovaries and the skin of patients undergoing uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), and to suggest a radiologic protocol directed at reducing the risks involved in this procedure. METHODS: seventy-three consecutive women (mean age: 27 years) participating in an institutional research protocol, having symptomatic uterine fibroids with indication for minimally invasive treatment, underwent UFE. We estimated the radiation absorbed by the ovaries by means of vaginal dosimeters and the radiation dose absorbed by the skin by means of

Hematologic consequences of exposure to ionizing radiation.

From the early 1900s, it has been known that ionizing radiation (IR) impairs hematopoiesis through a variety of mechanisms. IR exposure directly damages hematopoietic stem cells and alters the capacity of bone marrow stromal elements to support and/or maintain hematopoiesis in vivo and in vitro. Exposure to IR induces dose-dependent declines in circulating hematopoietic cells not only through reduced bone marrow production, but also by redistribution and apoptosis of mature formed elements of the blood. Recently, the importance of using lymphocyte depletion kinetics to provide a "crude" dose e

Response of the canine lung to fractionated irradiation: pathologic changes and isoeffect curves.

Canine lungs were irradiated with a range of total doses given in 2, 3, or 4 Gy per fraction. Sequential histopathologic evaluations were done at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Pathologic changes in canine lungs were found to be similar to those found in other species demonstrating a clinically latent period, a pneumonitis phase, and late fibrosis and vascular damage. The relative impact of endothelial cell and pneumocyte injury on either early or late radiation injury of the lung is difficult to resolve. Therefore, it is not possible to define a target cell for lung injury at this time. The alpha/be

[Complications following external radiotherapy of prostate cancer. Case reports and overview of the literature].

Complications after definitive radiotherapy of prostatic cancer occur in 3 to 30% of cases. Most common is radiation injury of the urethra, the bladder or the rectum. Definitive radiation therapy of carcinoma of the prostata after staging lymphadenectomy has a considerable risk of lymphedema of the lower extremities. Two typical cases are used to illustrate the permanent damage done to the quality of life of the particular patient. The complication rate is decreased if only the prostate is irradiated without radiation of the regional lymphnodes. Interstitial radiation therapy using 125-Iodine-

Characterization of cellular senescence in radiation ulcers and therapeutic effects of mesenchymal stem cell-derived conditioned medium.

BACKGROUND: Radiation ulcers are a common and severe injury after uncontrolled exposure to ionizing radiation. The most important feature of radiation ulcers is progressive ulceration, which results in the expansion of radiation injury to the nonirradiated area and refractory wounds. Current theories cannot explain the progression of radiation ulcers. Cellular senescence refers to as irreversible growth arrest that occurs after exposure to stress, which contributes to tissue dysfunction by inducing paracrine senescence, stem cell dysfunction and chronic inflammation. However, it is not yet cle

[Exposure to ionizing radiation: radiobiological and pathogenic effects (2)].

The present paper describes the radiobiological effects induced by an exposure to ionizing radiation and their pathogenesis. The different skin reactions are described in detail because of their importance and frequency. Thus the acute skin lesions after high doses and the late effects resulting, either from high doses, or from accumulation of chronic irradiation, are studied. The main early syndromes are then characterized: neurological, gastro-intestinal, bone-marrow and prodromic. As far as the complex problem of radiocarcinogenesis is concerned, the main results derived from studies by int

Amifostine alleviates ionizing radiation-induced small intestinal motility dysfunction in mice by remodeling the structure of the enteric nervous system.

Radiation-induced intestinal injury is characterized by structural and functional impairment of intestinal tissues following exposure to ionizing radiation, and homeostasis of the enteric nervous system is essential for preserving normal gastrointestinal physiological function. While amifostine confers radioprotection primarily through free radical scavenging and modulation of the intestinal microbiota, its regulatory effects on the enteric nervous system remain unexplored. In this study, a mouse model of radiation-induced intestinal injury was established by targeted abdominal irradiation wit

Radiation-induced Testicular Damage in Mice: Protective Effects of Apigenin Revealed by Histopathological Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Radiation exposure poses a significant threat to reproductive health, particularly the male reproductive system. The testes, being highly sensitive to radiation, are susceptible to damage that can impair fertility and overall reproductive function. The study aims to investigate the radioprotective effects of apigenin on the testis through histopathological evaluation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This research involved utilizing a total of 40 mice, which were randomly divided into eight groups of five mice each. The groups were categorized as follows: A) negative control group, B, C, an

The United States Navy and Employees with Cancer: The Time for Change Is Now.

The US Navy, including the US Marine Corps and Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP), has a robust radiological protection and monitoring program meeting (and typically exceeding, in the name of conservatism) federal law requirements. The program covers the variety of ways in which the Navy produces and uses ionizing radiation and radioactive sources: in medicine, nuclear ship propulsion and repair, industrial and aircraft radiography, and myriad other unique uses in carrying out its vital mission. In executing these programs, thousands of people across the world are employed as active-duty

[New Attempt of Radiation Oncology Section to Radiotherapy for Head and Neck Cancer].

UNLABELLED: Oral care is important for patients with head and neck cancer who undergo radiotherapy because these patients encounter various symptoms, which decrease their quality of life(QOL). Oral mucositis is considered the major side effect of radiation, and the dose-volume parameters can serve as predictors of the occurrence of severe oral mucositis. Therefore, understanding radiation treatment planning(e. g., prescription dose and irradiated volumes of the organs at risk)and providing oral healthcare before, during, and after radiotherapy are essential for maintaining patients' QOL. Patient Exposure from Radiologic and Nuclear Medicine Procedures in the United States and Worldwide: 2009-2018.

The U.S. National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) conducted a retrospective assessment of the U.S. data, and the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) performed a similar worldwide assessment for 2009-2018 (with most data from 2014 to 2017). Using the data from those reports, the frequency of radiologic and nuclear medicine studies, annual collective, and per capita effective dose in the United States for 2016 were compared with worldwide estimates from 2009 to 2018. There were an estimated 691 million radiologic, CT, dental, a

Dose-response relationships for radiation-related heart disease: Impact of uncertainties in cardiac dose reconstruction.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiation-related heart disease (RRHD) can occur many decades after thoracic radiotherapy for Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) or childhood cancer (CC). To quantify the likely risk of RRHD for patients treated today, dose-response relationships derived from patients treated in previous decades are used. Publications presenting these dose-response relationships usually include estimates of uncertainties in the risks but ignore the effect of uncertainties in the reconstructed cardiac doses. MATERIALS/METHODS: We assessed the systematic and random uncertainties in the reconstructed

A review of biological effects and treatments of inhaled depleted uranium aerosol.

Depleted uranium (DU) is primarily used for DU bombs and DU tanks in the military. Aerosol inhalation is considered the primary route of DU exposure. Although laboratory tests have confirmed that inhalation of DU aerosol can cause lung, kidney, and other organ damage, epidemiological studies have found no conclusive evidence that persons in areas with prolonged exposure to DU-containing bombs are affected. After the body inhaled DU aerosols, we first clear the insoluble DU through whole-lung lavage (WLL). Then we eliminate the soluble uranium by the chelating agent. Besides, reducing DU damage

Hazards of Ionizing Radiation and its Impact on Spine Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Spine surgery relies heavily on imaging, with radiography-based devices being the major operating room imaging modality. Radiation exposure is an occupational risk historically recognized shortly after the discovery of radiation itself. Exposure of both patients and operating room staff is of increasing concern as the knowledge regarding the hazards of radiation is steadily accumulating. METHODS: We conducted a literature review of the history of radiation exposure limits and updates on current studies showing the risks of low-dose exposures. RESULTS: Multiple studies reporting o

New approaches to reduce radiation exposure.

Exposure to ionizing radiation is associated with a long-term risk of health effects, including cancer. Radiation exposure to the U.S. population from cardiac imaging has increased markedly over the past three decades. Initiatives to reduce radiation exposure have focused on the tenets of appropriate study "justification" and "optimization" of imaging protocols. This article reviews ways to optimally reduce radiation dose across the spectrum of cardiac imaging.
