In most dermatology centres where phototesting is performed, the starting dose is calculated as a proportion of the minimal erythema dose (MED). In 1984, when the CHART regime was devised, it was predicted that acute reactions in skin and mucosae would be more severe but that there would be a considerable reduction of late effects in normal tissues. This article, the last in a three-part series, reports the methods used to evaluate the Radiation-induced Skin Reaction Assessment Scale (RISRAS), along with the results. For a newly developed tool, the results of the elementary reliability and validity testing were satisfactory. Few cases of radiation injury related to lengthy interventional neuroradiologic procedures have been reported, although concern has been heightened, as evidence by a 1994 FDA Public Health Advisory. We report a case of radiation-induced dermatitis in a patient undergoing multiple diagnostic and embolization procedures for treatment of a spinal arteriovenous malformation.

An industrial radiographer was accidentally exposed to a high dose of ionizing radiation from an 192Ir source during radiography of weldjoints in gas pipelines. Some symptoms of high radiation exposure occurred immediately after the incident. The clinical effect of skin erythema developed within 7 d, leading to progressive tissue deterioration. The dose to the body was estimated to be about 2-3 Gy, and the dose to the fingertips was approximately 24 Gy.

The process of epithelialization and the antiseptic effect of nucliderm-gel applied locally have been studied on 63 oncologic patients subjected to radiotherapy. In all cases under study, nucliderm-gel promotes skin epithelialization and has a high antiseptic effect as compared with the drugs applied hitherto.
