Assessing angulation on digital images of radiographs of fractures of the distal radius: visual estimation versus computer software measurement.

We assessed the reliability of visual estimation of angles on computer images of radiographs, and compared their accuracy with the measurement of angles using computer software for ten distal radius fractures. We asked 73 clinicians to visually estimate the dorsal angulation on ten computerized radiographs of fractures of the distal radius. The reliability of these estimations was calculated. Their accuracy was compared to a 'gold standard' obtained by consensus agreement between three consultants measuring these angles using the software. Inter-observer reliability was calculated as ICC = 0.5

Effect of computer-aided detection on mammographic performance: experimental study on readers with different levels of experience.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of computer-aided detection (CAD) on the reader's performance. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four screening radiologists, two novice radiologists, and two residents with no prior experience in CAD read films of 200 women without and with CAD. The films, including 16 screen-detected cancers and 35 cancers "missed" on prior screening, were divided into two rollers: A (free time schedule) and B (prompted time schedule). Reading times were noted. Individual readings without and with CAD were compared, sensitivities and specificities were calculated. RESULTS: The sensitivi

Prediction of outcome by computer-assisted analysis of lung area on the chest radiograph of infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Pulmonary hypoplasia is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). Pulmonary hypoplasia is characterized by low volume lungs, and affected infants are likely to have a low lung area on their chest radiograph. The authors assessed whether, in CDH infants, computer-assisted analysis of the chest radiograph lung area gave an accurate indication of lung volume, and if a low lung area was a better predictor of poor outcome (death or oxygen dependency at 28 days) than other test results. METHODS: Comparisons were made of the r

Image Resolution's Impact on Artificial Intelligence & Human Accuracy in Full-Mouth Radiographic Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used for dental radiographic interpretation, yet the effect of image resolution on diagnostic accuracy compared with human evaluators remains unclear. This study evaluated how medium- versus high-resolution full-mouth radiographs influence diagnostic performance of an AI system and experienced clinicians. METHODS: In this retrospective comparative study, 200 full-mouth series radiographs were divided equally into medium-resolution (96-300 dpi) and high-resolution (≥720 dpi) groups. Three independent human examiners and an AI system (Dia

AI Should Read Mammograms Only When Confident: A Hybrid Breast Cancer Screening Reading Strategy.

Background Quantifying the uncertainty in artificial intelligence (AI)-based interpretations of mammograms could help AI integration in screening. Purpose To evaluate the reduction in radiologists' reading workload in mammographic screening while maintaining performance by incorporating an AI model that includes uncertainty quantification. Materials and Methods An AI model was introduced that outputs a probability of malignancy (PoM) and a measure of its uncertainty. Eight candidate uncertainty metrics, based on one or all suspicious regions, were tested. A hybrid reading approach was proposed

Multi-Class Deep Learning Model for Detecting Pediatric Distal Forearm Fractures Based on the AO/OTA Classification.

Common pediatric distal forearm fractures necessitate precise detection. To support prompt treatment planning by clinicians, our study aimed to create a multi-class convolutional neural network (CNN) model for pediatric distal forearm fractures, guided by the AO Foundation/Orthopaedic Trauma Association (AO/ATO) classification system for pediatric fractures. The GRAZPEDWRI-DX dataset (2008-2018) of wrist X-ray images was used. We labeled images into four fracture classes (FRM, FUM, FRE, and FUE with F, fracture; R, radius; U, ulna; M, metaphysis; and E, epiphysis) based on the pediatric AO/ATO

Deep learning-based automatic detection for pulmonary nodules on chest radiographs: The relationship with background lung condition, nodule characteristics, and location.

PURPOSE: Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD), which assists in the interpretation of chest radiographs, is becoming common. However, few studies have evaluated the benefits and pitfalls of CAD in the real world. This study aimed to evaluate the independent performance of commercially available deep learning-based automatic detection (DLAD) software, EIRL Chest X-ray Lung Nodule, in a cohort that included patients with background pulmonary abnormalities often encountered in clinical situations. METHODS: Patients with clinically suspected lung cancer for whom chest radiography was performed within a

[Sagittal balance and compensatory mechanism after segmental instrumentation for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis].

PURPOSE: Previous studies have demonstrated good ability to improve the sagittal profile with the use of segmental instrumentation for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) by analysing the sagittal vertical axis (SVA). However, several authors recommend analysing the spinopelvic relation in addition to the SVA. While compensatory mechanisms may neutralise a positive SVA, these mechanisms are energy consuming and may lead to unphysiological biomechanics, which can negatively influence the quality of life. The purpose of this radiographic analysis was to analyse global sagittal balance and to i

Diagnostic accuracy and inter-rater reliability of 64-multislice 3D-CTA compared to intra-arterial DSA for intracranial aneurysms.

Catheter-based intra-arterial digital subtraction angiography (IADSA) is widely trusted for diagnosing cerebral aneurysms. However, three-dimensional CT angiography (3D-CTA) is evolving. This study compares the diagnostic performance and inter-rater reliability of 64-slice 3D-CTA and IADSA. Nineteen patients with 26 suspected cerebral aneurysms (23 with confirmed aneurysms, three negative controls) underwent both IADSA and 3D-CTA. Two independent reviewers assessed both imaging modalities for the presence of an aneurysm and subsequently described aneurysmal location, size, shape, orientation,

Computer assisted quantification of vasospasm on angiograms.

We describe a new computer-based, automated method for the assessment of in vivo cerebral vasospasm. Arterial diameter measurements were performed on post-processed digital substraction angiographic images, using "pixel" as the unit. Vasospasm which was difficult to detect by visual inspection could be measured by the "stenosis quantification" program. A computer-assisted method such as we describe might decrease the risk of subjective errors.

Low Dose Contrast Enhanced CT Thorax Protocol: Comparison of Low Kilovoltage, Low Contrast Volume Using Iterative Reconstruction Technique with Standard Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Computed enhanced computed tomography (CECT) of the thorax is an effective imaging technique for diagnosing lung diseases. However, the increased use of CECT thorax scans has raised concerns regarding cancer risk and contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN). The iterative reconstruction (IR) method, specifically iDose4, enhances image quality (IQ) and reduces artifacts at low doses (LD). This study aimed to evaluate the image quality (IQ) and radiation dose (RD) of low-dose, low-volume (LD-LV) CECT thorax with iDose4, compared to standard dose (SD) CECT thorax (iDose4). METHODS: Group A
