Total depletion of iron stores with a moderately decreased blood hemoglobin concentration (114 x 10 vs. 155 x 12 g/l in controls, n = 28) was produced in rats (n = 28) by rearing them for six weeks on an iron free diet, in iron free cages, starting at two weeks of age. Gastric mucus glycoproteins were extracted with 2% Triton X-100 from rat gastric corpus and antrum and purified by CsCl equilibrium centrifugation. Corpus mucus glycoproteins were degraded into what appeared to be two "subunits" (Mw 4.4 x 10(5) and 6 x 10(6)) by the reduction of disulfide bonds. Papain digestion of the latter produced glycopeptides with a molecular weight of approximately 4.4 x 10(5). Reperfusion of cardiac muscle after an ischemic episode results in the cells becoming overloaded with Ca2+. Gross ultrastructural changes, including the formation of contraction bands, also occur. Low plasma retinol (vitamin A) in premature infants has been associated with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Also, retinol (vitamin A) deficiency is characterized by loss of cilia and squamous metaplasia of the respiratory tract, similar to the histological lesions of bronchopulmonary dysplasia of the premature infant. Using the unbiased disector method we have shown that chronic alcohol consumption induces a significant decrease of dentate gyrus granule cell density in alcohol-fed rats for 18 months. Apomorphine has been reported to increase shock-suppressed drinking, which suggests that it might have antianxiety activity.
