Cancer therapy-related cognitive impairment, part 1: an integrative clinical-mechanistic framework from phenotypes to convergent neurobiological pathways.

Cancer therapy-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a frequent complication of cancer treatment. It involves multiple biological mechanisms: neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired neurogenesis, and altered brain connectivity. Although these mechanisms have been extensively studied, evidence across cytotoxic chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, and targeted therapies is often presented separately. This review is the first of a two-part series addressing the mechanisms underlying CRCI and current and emerging therapeutic strategies for its prevention and managemen

Histone Modification on Parathyroid Tumors: A Review of Epigenetics.

Parathyroid tumors are very prevalent conditions among endocrine tumors, being the second most common behind thyroid tumors. Secondary hyperplasia can occur beyond benign and malignant neoplasia in parathyroid glands. Adenomas are the leading cause of hyperparathyroidism, while carcinomas represent less than 1% of the cases. Tumor suppressor gene mutations such as MEN1 and CDC73 were demonstrated to be involved in tumor development in both familiar and sporadic types; however, the epigenetic features of the parathyroid tumors are still a little-explored subject. We present a review of epigenet

[Disulfiram and addiction: reminders and new perspectives of use].

Disulfiram is a relatively old molecule, which today remains marginal in the treatment of alcoholics diseases. Using this type of treatment is the subject of ethical debate. The prescription of this therapeutic requires clinical and biological rigorous evaluations before treatment. Its main action in treatment of alcoholism is related to the restraint of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase action causing the antabuse reaction. Prescription of disulfiram, supported by specialized programs of compartmental integrated care, brings significant benefit for alcoholic patients. Recently, following the discove

Intellectual, academic, and adaptive functioning of Tourette syndrome children with and without attention deficit disorder.

The intellectual, academic, and adaptive strengths and weaknesses of 30, medication-free children (M = 10.5 years) with Tourette syndrome (TS) were assessed with a battery of standardized psychoeducational measures and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales. Results indicated significant relative weaknesses in mental and written arithmetic, and relative strengths in reading achievement and abstract, logical thinking. Socialization skills emerged as a significant weakness in adaptive functioning. Comparisons between TS children with attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADD-H) (n = 19)

Characteristics of patients with multiple personality and dissociative disorders on psychological testing.

We describe a new psychological testing procedure used on a consecutive series of 14 patients with multiple personality and dissociative disorders who met DSM-III-R and research criteria for dissociative disorders. Once dissociative phenomena were accounted for in testing, most patients displayed response patterns markedly different from those of schizophrenic and borderline patients. Patients showed striking variability on cognitive and projective tests, often related to posttraumatic intrusions. Rorschach protocols showed unusual thinking accompanied by psychological complexity and highly de

How multiple sclerosis is related to animal illness, stress and diabetes.

At the University of Alberta's multiple sclerosis research clinic 100 patients with multiple sclerosis were matched to control patients for age, sex, race and zone of residence before the age of 15 years. Case and control subjects were interviewed and information was collected by questionnaire on factors that might play a role in the development of multiple sclerosis. The only factors found to be significantly associated with the development of this disorder were a history of leisure time spent in physical activities before the onset of symptoms, exposure to animal illness -- specifically cani

Therapeutic Drug Monitoring for Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors in Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Inter-individual variability in drug response pose significant challenges to treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). TKIs meet traditional criteria for using therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM), but research is still limited. Understanding the role of TDM in individualizing treatment strategies could help optimize treatment. Here we review the state of knowledge of TDM for TKIs in mRCC treatment. A comprehensive literature review of original research studies focusing on TDM of TKIs in mRCC treatment, clinical in vivo studies repor

Tumour necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) and receptors in type 1, type 2 and type 17 inflammation in cross-sectional asthma study.

Tumour necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) reportedly promotes, or conversely, resolves inflammation in asthma. In this study of TRAIL and cell receptors in sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage and biopsy from subjects in the Severe Asthma Research Program at Wake Forest, the high TRAIL group had significant increases in all leucocytes, and was associated with increased type 1, type 2 and type 17 cytokines, but not type 9 interleukin 9. Two variants at loci in the TRAIL gene were associated with higher sputum levels of TRAIL. Increased TRAIL decoy receptor R3/DcR1 was observed

Hopelessness in palliative care for people with motor neurone disease: Conceptual considerations.

The concepts of hope and its absence, hopelessness, are seen as crucial in palliative care for people with motor neurone disease. A primary measure in psychological research on hopelessness in people with motor neurone disease is the Beck Hopelessness Scale. This scale can be understood as being conceptually based on the philosophical standard account of hope, which understands hope as an intentional expectancy. This essay argues that this is a misconstruction of hopelessness in palliative care. Rather, pre-intentional hope is essential for palliative care of people with motor neurone disease.

Circumcising human subjects: An evaluation of experimental foreskin amputation using the Declaration of Helsinki.

This paper explores ethical considerations for active studies of circumcision, i.e., the amputation of the foreskin, in the form of a case study of three major trials performed in African countries in the early 2000s. The paper outlines the function of the foreskin and method and history of its amputation as well as its current use in attempting to combat the global AIDS crisis. These trials are then interrogated in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. In particular, the irreversible nature of amputation is given great consideration. The case studies are found to have serious failures

Emotional responses to food in adults with an eating disorder: a qualitative exploration.

There is a dearth of qualitative research exploring eating disordered individuals' emotional responses to the sight of different types of food. In this study we asked 10 adult women diagnosed with bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa or an eating disorder not otherwise specified (EDNOS) to articulate their thoughts whilst viewing slides of a range of different foodstuffs, during an in-depth interview session. The data were transcribed and subjected to qualitative analysis. A core theme of 'Control' was identified. Whilst control has been previously acknowledged in the literature as an important a

Pathological gambling and personality disorders: an exploratory study with the IPDE.

This article describes the most frequent personality disorders related to pathological gambling. Participants included 50 pathological gamblers assessed with the IPDE, and 50 normative subjects from the general population with the same demographic features (age, sex, and socioeconomic level). Thirty-two percent of the clinical sample (vs. the 8% of the normative sample) showed at least one personality disorder. The most prevalent disorders were Borderline (16%), followed by Antisocial, Paranoid, Narcissistic, and Non-specified (8% each). Gamblers with personality disorders presented an average

Further evidence of the multi-dimensionality of hallucinatory predisposition: factor structure of a modified version of the Launay-Slade Hallucinations Scale in a normal sample.

Recent years has seen an increasing interest in the hallucinatory experience, including investigations of its phenomenological prevalence and character both in pathological and normal (predisposed) populations. We investigated the multi-dimensionality of hallucinatory experiences in 265 subjects from the normal population, who completed a modified version of the Launay-Slade Hallucinations Scale. Principal components analysis was performed on the data. Four factors were obtained loading on items reflecting (1) sleep-related hallucinatory experiences (2) vivid daydreams (3) intrusive thoughts o

Pain Catastrophizing in Orthopedic Surgery: A Bibliometric Analysis of Global Research Trends, Collaborative Networks, and Clinical Implications (2001-2026).

IMPORTANCE: Pain catastrophizing is a pain-related cognitive construct involving persistent rumination about pain, magnification of pain threat, and feelings of helplessness. In musculoskeletal and perioperative contexts, higher catastrophizing is associated with greater pain intensity, disability, distress, delayed recovery, opioid use, and healthcare utilization. Within orthopedic populations, preoperative psychological status is increasingly recognized as relevant to postoperative pain and patient-reported outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To analyze worldwide research patterns on pain catastrophizing

The host susceptibility/resistance-related genes and gut microbial characteristics in Salmonella pullorum-infected chickens.

Pullorum disease is a bacterial disease caused by Salmonella pullorum in chickens, which is characterized by gastrointestinal infection and diarrhea. In traditional perspectives, research on pullorum disease primarily focused on clinical symptoms, epidemiological characteristics, and the pathogenic sites. This study, however, approaches the subject from the standpoint of host genetic basis and gut microbiota. For the positive and negative offspring chicks, which are the offspring of positive roosters and hens and negative roosters and hens, respectively, we conducted whole-genome association a

Effects of hand-press pellet on pain and daily life of elders with chronic lower back pain: randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: For elderly people with chronic lower back pain who need long-term management, there is a need for a nursing intervention study that is effective, is easy to perform, and applies complementary and alternative therapies to manage pain without repulsion. Hand pressure therapy is a treatment indigenous to Korea used to reduce pain and improve functions of daily life by applying acupuncture, pressure sticks, and moxibustion to parts of the hand as they relate to parts of the body. This research is to identify the effects of pellet pressed on the hand on pain and the daily lives of elde

Trauma-related dissociation and the autonomic nervous system: a systematic literature review of psychophysiological correlates of dissociative experiencing in PTSD patients.

Background: Neurophysiological models link dissociation (e.g. feeling detached during or after a traumatic event) to hypoarousal. It is currently assumed that the initial passive reaction to a threat may coincide with a blunted autonomic response, which constitutes the dissociative subtype of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Objective: Within this systematic review we summarize research which evaluates autonomic nervous system activation (e.g. heart rate, blood pressure) and dissociation in PTSD patients to discern the validity of current neurophysiological models of trauma-related hypoa

Changes in meal-related anxiety predict treatment outcomes in an intensive family-based treatment program for adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

Meal-related anxiety in individuals with eating disorders is associated with reduced caloric intake and persisting eating-disordered behaviors, which may reduce the likelihood of attaining or sustaining remission. The current study is the first to examine changes in meal-related anxiety as a predictor of outcomes in the context of a family-based partial hospitalization program. A sample of 51 adolescents with anorexia nervosa or atypical anorexia rated anxiety before and after all treatment meals using the Subjective Units of Distress Scale (SUDS). Regression analyses suggested that participan
