RATIONALE: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) epitomizes an acute peripheral neuropathy hallmarked by an autoimmune retort directed at the myelin sheath enwrapping peripheral nerves. While it is widely acknowledged that a majority of GBS patients boast a history of antecedent infections, the documentation of postoperative GBS occurrences is progressively mounting. Drawing upon an exhaustive compendium of recent case reports, the disease's inception spans a gamut from within 1 hour to 1.2 years.
PATIENT CONCERNS: At this juncture, we proffer a singular case: an instance involving a 51-year-old gent

Fish venoms can be lethal for Vertebrates. The effect depends of dose and subject, more than incriminated fish. The most constant symptom is a violent pain; but the serious pharmacological effects are respiratory and heart failure with marked hypotension and cardiac perturbations, neurologic damage, such as seizure and coma. Experimentation is difficult due to venom instability. Activity is lost by distilled water, lyophilisation in buffers, several successive freezing and defreezing. In addition, when venom is broken, other pharmacological effects are evidenced, for instance, with Synanceia v

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by the progressive loss of upper and lower motor neurones, leading to muscle wasting, paralysis and respiratory failure. Pathological cytoplasmic aggregation of the RNA-binding protein transactive response DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) protein occurs in neural tissues in ~97% of all ALS cases, and is also observed in skeletal muscle. Cytoplasmic aggregation of TDP-43 is believed to contribute to ALS pathogenesis; however, its precise mechanistic role/s continues to elude the field. This mini review explores the potential role and regulatio

With an estimated 100,000 new cases yearly worldwide, Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is the most common cause of flaccid paralysis. GBS is exceedingly rare in pregnancy and carries high maternal and fetal risk. We report a case of a 38-year-old essential primigravida who presented at 38 weeks six days gestational age with ascending paraplegia progressing to dysarthria, dysphagia, and facial weakness. A clinical diagnosis of GBS was made in an outside institution, supported by elevated protein on lumbar puncture. During the antepartum period, a diagnosis of gestational hypertension progressed to

This paper reported a case of a metastrongyloid nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum infection in a fennec (Vulpes zerda) kept in a zoo in central Italy. The fennec had shown paralysis of the hind limbs, anorexia, weakness and respiratory signs before death. Cardiomegaly and granulomatous pneumonia were the major anatomopathological findings. Inflammatory lesions associated with parasitic larvae were observed in the lungs, brain, liver, heart, spinal cord and kidney of the fennec at histology. A. vasorum diagnosis was confirmed by both morphological and molecular identification of adult worms reco

The spinal cord is a conduit within the central nervous system (CNS) that provides ongoing communication between the brain and the rest of the body, conveying complex sensory and motor information necessary for safety, movement, reflexes, and optimization of autonomic function. After a traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI), supraspinal influences on the peripheral nervous system and autonomic nervous system (ANS) are disrupted, leading to spastic paralysis, sympathetic blunting, and parasympathetic dominance, resulting in cardiac dysrhythmias, systemic hypotension, bronchoconstriction, copious re

The outbreak of SARS-CoV‑2 and the associated COVID-19 pandemic pose major challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. New data on diagnosis, clinical presentation and treatment of the disease are published on a daily basis. This case report describes the fatal course of severe COVID-19 pneumonia in an 81-year-old patient with no previous pulmonary disease who developed a giant bulla during non-invasive high-flow oxygen therapy. Virus-induced diffuse destruction of alveolar tissue or patient self-inflicted lung injury (P-SILI) are discussed as possible pathomechanisms. Future studies must dete

A 67-year-old male with a severe body deformity and a total collapse of the left lung due to infantile paralysis was admitted to a regional hospital for a spinal fracture. He suffered from cardiopulmonary arrest during the hospitalization. Although extubation was tried several times after resuscitation, he went into cardiopulmonary arrest repeatedly. The expiratory collapse of the central airways due to tracheobronchomalacia was suspected, requiring tracheostomy with persistent positive pressure ventilation. He was transferred to our hospital after several unsuccessful endobronchial interventi

Cosmetic facial injection is a mini-invasive surgical procedure and is widely used at present. Meanwhile, it may also cause severe complications like cerebrovascular infarction occasionally. A 49-year-old female patient presented to a local hospital with dysphoria, left eye and head ache, unconsciousness, orthocolosis, right upper extremity hemiplegic paralysis, and emesia after receiving facial injection of hyaluronic acid into the glabella. Low molecular weight heparin and clopidogrel were used to treat the patient, but there was no relief of symptoms. The patient gradually developed coma an

Botulism is a life-threatening toxin mediated disease that often presents with a sudden rapid onset of paralysis of their skeletal muscles with subsequent respiratory compromise and sudden death. Given the natural physiological changes during pregnancy, pregnant women with botulism may experience a more exaggerated course and have worse outcomes compared to nonpregnant women. Medical providers caring for such patients should not only maintain a high level of suspicion for botulism, but administration of an antitoxin early in their care can help reduce morbidity and mortality, while awaiting co

Stridor presenting soon after birth due to bilateral abductor vocal cord paralysis (VCP) is rare. We report a family with bilateral VCP affecting four male members in two generations and hence suggesting X-linked recessive inheritance. Severe stridor in the neonatal period requires meticulous airway evaluation, and tracheostomy in 35-70% cases. The current trend is towards conservative management and tracheostomy is avoided unless respiratory distress is severe or life-threatening. Neonatal VCP can be an isolated finding, or it can be familial with or without syndromic features. There are very

Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is an emerging picornavirus which causes severe respiratory disease, predominantly in children. In 2014, the largest and most widespread outbreak of EV-D68 described to date was reported in North America. Hospitals throughout the United States and Canada reported surges in patient volumes and resource utilization from August to October, 2014. In the US a total of 1,153 infections were confirmed in 49 states, although this is an underestimate of the likely millions of cases that occurred but were not tested. EV-D68 was detected in 14 patients who died; the role of the v

Botulism commonly occurs when the anaerobic, gram-positive bacterium Clostridium botulinum, under suitable conditions, produces botulinum neurotoxins. Named A-F, these toxins are the immediate causative agent of the clinical symptoms of symmetrical, descending neurological deficits, including respiratory muscle paralysis. We present five cases of foodborne botulism occurring in Greenland, two with fatal outcome, caused by ingestion of tradionally preserved eider fowl. In the cases of the survivors, antitoxin and supportive care, including mechanical ventilation, were administered. In these cas

In recent years, the impending impact of waterborne pathogens on human health has become a growing concern. Drinking water and recreational exposure to polluted water have shown to be linked to viral infections, since viruses are shed in extremely high numbers in the faeces and vomit of infected individuals and are routinely introduced into the water environment. All of the identified pathogenic viruses that pose a significant public health threat in the water environment are transmitted via the faecal-oral route. This group, are collectively known as enteric viruses, and their possible health

A term infant developed stridor, hoarse cry and respiratory distress after forceps-assisted delivery. Oral feeding resulted in aspiration. Flexible laryngoscopy showed a right-sided vocal cord paralysis (VCP). A magnetic resonance image (MRI) of the brain revealed an ovoid lesion in the posterior fossa impinging on the brainstem, which was considered to represent a subdural haematoma. Clinical signs of vocal cord palsy and the associated MRI changes resolved spontaneously by 6 weeks of age. Vocal cord palsy is a common cause of stridor in newborn infants, although in many cases it is considere

Acute laryngeal injury is a rare, potentially lethal injury. It often poses difficulty in airway management. Commonly described are external laryngeal or blunt injuries. We report a case of penetrating neck injury resulting in complete transection of cricoid cartilage. A lady presented with a large, deep slash wound in her neck from a knife injury. There was complete laryngotracheal separation. The airway was secured before she was taken to the operating theatre. A tracheostomy was performed. Exploration revealed the cricoid ring was cut horizontally into two. Anastomosis of the cartilaginous

Prenatal exposure of very low birth weight infants to chronic indolent chorioamnionitis with organisms such as mycoplasma and ureaplasma is frequent. Chorioamnionitis is inconsistently associated with changed risks of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) or bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), probably because the diagnosis of chorioamnionitis does not quantify the extent or duration of the fetal exposures to infection and inflammation. The correlations between prenatal exposures and postnatal lung disease also are confounded by the imprecision of the diagnoses of RDS and BPD. In animal models, ch

We report here a case of acute hepatitis A, which was complicated by Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). A 32-year old male admitted to our hospital with the symptoms of acute hepatitis and was diagnosed to have acute hepatitis A with positive IgM anti hepatitis A virus antibody. On 9th day after the onset of jaundice, acute progressive, ascending, symmetric motor paralysis were developed and eventually respiratory failure ensued. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed albumino-cytologic dissociation and nerve conduction velocity test suggested a polyradiculopathy. He was diagnosed to have GBS and tre

Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) are autoimmune disorders caused by impaired self-tolerance mechanisms triggered by interaction between genetic and environmental factors. ITP is an immune-mediated destruction of platelets resulting in mucocutaneous bleeding, GBS is an ascending motor paralysis caused by an inflammatory demyelination of peripheral nerves, and HT is characterized by autoimmune-mediated destruction of the thyroid gland. The concurrent development of ITP and GBS has only rarely been reported in the literature, a

Möbius syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by unilateral or bilateral facial paralysis and defective extraocular eye movements secondary to congenital paresis of the facial (VII) and abducens (VI) cranial nerves. Associated dysfunction of other cranial nerves, orofacial abnormalities, and skeletal muscle hypotonia are common accompanying features. Given the multisystem involvement of Möbius syndrome, there are several potential perioperative concerns. Of primary importance to the anesthesia provider are the propensity for postoperative respiratory failure due to several pathological mech
