[Influencing factors of visual hallucinations in patients with Parkinson's disease and its relationship with sleep disorders].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and influencing factors of visual hallucinations in patients with Parkinson's disease(PD), and to analyze the relationship between visual hallucinations and sleep disorders. METHODS: We recruited 187 patients with PD(H-Y Ⅰ-Ⅲ) from outpatient department in Beijing Hospital. The patients were investigated for general information and the use of medicine. The patients were divided into visual hallucination(VH) group and non-hallucination(non-VH) group. A comparison study was conducted between two groups. We investigated the sleep disorders of PD patients a

Rett syndrome associated with continuous spikes and waves during sleep.

Major speech impairment is a cardinal feature of Rett syndrome. Epilepsy, of variable presentation, is also frequently described. We report a girl who presented rapid speech regression while EEG showed continuous spikes and waves during slow sleep. The clinical picture was consistent with Rett syndrome, confirmed by MECP2 mutation R133C. We hypothesized that speech regression was partially related to nocturnal epileptic activity. Several antiepileptic drugs were used unsuccessfully but valproic acid was accompanied by improvement of verbal fluency, social interaction and manual abilities as me

Transient myoclonic jerks and restless legs during periodic tachypnea in acute mountain sickness.

A 46-year-old man with lower airway infection developed acute mountain sickness (AMS) at a 5,100 m high base camp. AMS was associated with myoclonic jerks (7-8/h) and restless legs. AMS with neurological manifestations could be relieved only upon descent to 3,500 m. To avoid pulmonary or neurological problems at high altitude, adequate acclimatization is a prerequisite.

Challenging issues: sleep-wake, augmentation and quality of life.

RLS is a common disorder which has an important impact on the health and quality of life of patients, with the main consequences being sleep-related. Special attention needs to be paid to patients with depression. The diagnosis of RLS is based on medical history and clinical examination. The most important laboratory examination is measurement of serum ferritin which should be >40 microg/L. The presence of all four essential diagnostic criteria confirms the RLS diagnosis. To detect secondary forms, a clinical examination and laboratory investigations, especially measuring serum ferritin are re

[Sleep and aging].

UNLABELLED: A COMMON DISORDER: Sleep is one of the most often altered functions in elderly people. Obviously, insomnia is one of the main complain, inducing benzodiazepine (BSD) abuse, but we must keep in mind that sleep apnoea syndrome (SAS) and restless legs syndrome (RLS) are also frequent in this group of age. After exclusion of the various age-related conditions that could induce sleep disorders, we must focalise on primary and secondary sleep disorders. As an introduction, methods of sleep analysis are described and qualitative and quantitative sleep variables are given. PHYSIOLOGICAL SL…

Sleep disorders in traumatic brain injury.

The purpose of the review is to collect the most relevant current literature on the mechanisms of normal sleep and sleep disorders associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI), to discuss the most frequent conditions and the evidence on their possible treatments and future research. Sleep disorders are extremely prevalent after TBI (30-84%). Insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders are the most frequent disorders among the population that has suffered mild TBI, while hypersomnolence disorders are more frequent in populations that have suffered moderate and severe TBI. The syndrome of obstructiv

PLM detection by actigraphy compared to polysomnography: a validation and comparison of two actigraphs.

OBJECTIVE: To compare periodic leg movement (PLM) counts obtained with polysomnography (PSG) to those obtained from actigraphy with two devices (Actiwatch and PAM-RL). METHODS: Twenty-four patients underwent full night actigraphy with Actiwatch from both legs and simultaneous PSG. Out of these patients, 10 had additional actigraphy with PAM-RL. Bilateral and unilateral PLM indices (PLMI) for both actigraphs were calculated for time in bed and compared to polysomnographic PLMI. Additionally, a comparison between the two different actigraphs was performed. RESULTS: PLMI obtained with Actiwatch

Effects of new PLM scoring rules on PLM rate in relation to sleep and resting wake for RLS and healthy controls.

PURPOSE: This study evaluates the differences in periodic leg movement (PLM) rates for Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) and healthy controls when using the updated PLM scoring criteria developed by IRLSSG in 2016 versus the prior PLM scoring criteria developed by IRLSSG in 2006. Four major problems with the prior standards had been objectively identified, i.e. minimum inter-movement interval should be 10 not 5 s, non-PLM leg movements should end any preceding PLM sequence, a leg movement (LM) can be any length > 0.5 s, and a PLM should be a persisting movement not a couple or a series of closely s…

[Effective melatonin therapy in a case of Machado-Joseph disease with insomnia].

The effects of melatonin (MLT) therapy on insomnia and serum MLT concentration were studied in a 44-year-old man with Machado-Joseph disease. He suffered from insomia since age 41, and could not sleep well, despite that he was given many kinds of hypnotics. He showed neither noctural central apnea, inspirative stridor, restless leg syndrome, REM without atonia, nor noctural polyuria, all of which are known to cause insomnia in spinocerebellar degeneration. The peak serum level of MLT was low, 9.2 pg/ml. He was administered 9 mg of MLT p.o. at 8 p.m., and it's peak noctural level elevated to 7,

Effect of comorbid benign joint hypermobility and juvenile fibromyalgia syndromes on pediatric functional gastrointestinal disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Musculoskeletal pain has a considerable frequency in pediatric outpatients. Benign joint hypermobility (BJHS) and juvenile fibromyalgia syndrome (JFMS) are non-inflammatory causes of musculoskeletal pain. In these syndromes, pain is often accompanied by various symptoms such as fatigue, sleep difficulties, mood disorders, cognitive dysfunction, dizziness, headaches, abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome, and restless legs syndrome. Functional dyspepsia, functional vomiting, functional abdominal pain, functional constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome all together are termed f…

What these conditions have in common is hypersensitivity, not just to pain, but also to all exteroceptive stimuli, from deep sensitivity in the neuro-vegetative system, the sense organs and certain functions of the central nervous syste …

Sleep disturbances and excessive daytime sleepiness in Parkinson disease: an overview.

Sleep disturbances are frequent in Parkinson disease. These disorders can be broadly categorized into those that involve nocturnal sleep and excessive daytime sleepiness. The disorders that are often observed during the night in PD include sleep fragmentation that may be due to recurrent PD symptoms, sleep apnea, Restless Leg Syndrome/ periodic limb movements and REM sleep behavior disorder. Excessive daytime sleepiness is also a common occurrence in PD. EDS can arise from several etiologies, and patients may have more than one etiology responsible. The causes of EDS include nocturnal sleep di

Sleep and the menopause.

Sleep problems and their consequences are a serious public health issue, imposing a substantial burden on the individual and society. Although sleep occupies one-third of our lives and can be considered to be an important subject, sleep medicine is a young speciality and problems are poorly investigated. Sleeping problems are frequently reported during the menopausal transition. Subjectively women find that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) significantly improves sleep quality. Thus, HRT can be considered as a first-line therapy for insomnia. However, in some cases insomnia coincides with the
