Adherence to the Mediterranean diet was positively associated with micronutrient adequacy and negatively associated with dietary energy density among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The possible associations between adherence to the Mediterranean diet and micronutrient and energy intakes are unknown among Israeli adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional, nationally representative, school-based study was conducted in Israeli adolescents. Schoolchildren (n = 5005), aged 11-18 years, who completed a food frequency questionnaire and had complete data to compose a 14-item modified KIDMED score were included. RESULTS: The nutrient intakes for all the micronutrients showed a significant monotonic increase in the poor, average and good KIDMED groups (all P < 0.001).

Vitamin metabolism and requirements: some aspects reviewed.

Current knowledge concerning the metabolism and requirements of thiamine, riboflavine, vitamin B6, vitamin A, and vitamin C in the human is reviewed. The requirements of these nutrients appear to be the results of their excretory losses in the urine and faeces and through metabolic degradations. Although influenced by numerous factors, the catabolism appears in general to be the result of actions by degradative pathways unrelated to the biochemical or physiological functions of the vitamins. As a consequence, these excretory and catabolic losses cause continuous obligatory requirements for the

Nutrition survey of schoolchildren in greater Winnipeg. II. Dietary intake and biochemical assessment.

The total dietary intake of energy and of individual nutrients of 99 grades 3 and 6 children from 10 greater Winnipeg shcools were generally comparable to those reported by Nutrition Canada for the Manitoba and national samples, although the percentile distributions of total caloric intake and dietary intake of vitamin A for the Winnipeg children tended to be lower. The median daily intake of protein was 212% of the Canadian Dietary Standard and most came from animal sources. Dietary fat was largely from animal sources as well. Hemoglobin concentrations were marginally low in four children, an

Clinical Characteristics, Molecular Profile, and Outcomes in Indian Patients with Glutaric Aciduria Type 1.

Glutaric acidemia type 1 (GA-1, OMIM 231670) is an autosomal recessive inborn error of metabolism caused by the deficiency of glutaryl-coenzyme A (CoA) dehydrogenase with most children presenting in infancy with encephalopathy, dystonia, and macrocephaly. In this article, we presented the clinical characteristics, molecular profile, and outcomes in 29 unrelated families with affected children (30 cases total). The mean age at onset of illness was 10 months (±14.58), whereas the mean age at referral for molecular diagnosis was 29.44 months (±28.11). Patients were residents of nine different sta

Epilepsy due to PNPO mutations: genotype, environment and treatment affect presentation and outcome.

The first described patients with pyridox(am)ine 5'-phosphate oxidase deficiency all had neonatal onset seizures that did not respond to treatment with pyridoxine but responded to treatment with pyridoxal 5'-phosphate. Our data suggest, however, that the clinical spectrum of pyridox(am)ine 5'-phosphate oxidase deficiency is much broader than has been reported in the literature. Sequencing of the PNPO gene was undertaken for a cohort of 82 individuals who had shown a reduction in frequency and severity of seizures in response to pyridoxine or pyridoxal 5'-phosphate. Novel sequence changes were

The dietary status of "new" vegetarians.

A study of fifty well educated young adults, average age twenty-eight years, living in a metropolitan area of New England, who were followers of Zen macrobiotics, revealed that none was below his/her desirable weight although all were at the limit of the normal range. Average triceps skinfold thickness of the men and women fell in the 15th percentile, while arm circumference for members of both sexes was in the 5th percentile (24). Their ten-day dietary records indicated that the base of their diet was grains interspersed with a wide variety of vegetables, fish, cheese, and eggs and that nutri

Hepatic Form of Dihydrolipoamide Dehydrogenase Deficiency (DLDD): Phenotypic Spectrum, Laboratory Findings, and Therapeutic Approaches in 52 Patients.

Dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase deficiency (MIM 246900/DLDD) is an autosomal recessive mitochondrial disease with three clinical subgroups. The hepatic form leads to recurrent metabolic decompensations often accompanied by elevated levels of liver transaminases (ELT) in blood, sometimes progressing to acute liver failure (ALF). Genetically, it is linked to the p.G229C variant in the DLD gene, which has been reported in the Ashkenazi Jewish and Arabic population. In this study, we analyzed phenotypic diversity, therapeutic management, and outcome in novel symptomatic individuals with hepatic DLD

A novel automated multi-cycle magnetic solid-phase extraction coupled to LC-MS/MS to study the disorders of six functional B vitamins in patients with gastroenterology and hyperhomocysteinemia.

B vitamins are essential for human life and their disorders can cause a variety of diseases. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled to LC-MS/MS is a preferred technique for determining multiple B vitamins, however, their complexity in real biological matrices makes it hard to achieve satisfactory recovery and accuracy when simultaneous detection. In this study, a novel automated multi-cycle magnetic SPE (MSPE) coupled to the LC-MS/MS method was established using a mixed-mode anion exchange magnetic adsorbent for the simultaneous extraction of six functional B vitamins, including methylmalonic ac

"De Novo" Hypercapnic Respiratory Failure Unmasking Neuromuscular Disorders: Experiences From a Tertiary Care Center and Review of Literature.

OBJECTIVES: Neuromuscular disorders could have respiratory involvement early or late into illness. Rarely, patients may present with a hypercapnic respiratory failure (with minimal motor signs) unmasking an underlying disease. There are hardly any studies which have addressed the spectrum and challenges involved in management of this subset, especially in the real-world scenario. METHODS: A retrospective study comprising consecutive patients hospitalized with hypercapnic respiratory failure as the sole/dominant manifestation. The clinical-electrophysiological spectrum, phrenic conductions, di

Transcriptome analysis of tilapia streptococcus agalactiae in response to baicalin.

Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) is a highly pathogenic bacterial pathogen in aquatic animals. Our previous study has demonstrated the significant inhibitory effect of baicalin on β-hemolytic/cytolytic activity, which is a key virulence factor of S. agalactiae. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the mechanism underlying baicalin's inhibition of S. agalactiae β-hemolytic/cytolytic activity by transcriptomic analysis. Bacteria were exposed to 39.06 µg/mL baicalin for 6 h, and their β-hemolytic/cytolytic activities were assessed using blood plates. Then, the differentially expressed gen

Incorporating second-tier genetic screening for multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Newborn screening (NBS) for multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) has poor sensitivity. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of incorporating second-tier genetic screening for MADD. METHODS: A total of 453,390 newborns were screened for inherited metabolic disorders using tandem mass spectrometry from January 2017 to May 2022. A matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) assay was developed to identify 23 common ETFDH variants and used for second-tier screening of MADD. RESULTS: Overall, 185 newborns with suspec

A systematic review of late-onset and very-late-onset multiple acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency: Cohort analysis and patient report from Taiwan.

Multiple acyl-coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) is a rare metabolic disorder with a dramatic clinical presentation. It was recently discovered that MADD may present at an advanced age. The clinical and laboratory data of an index patient and patients previously diagnosed at our institution were collected. A systematic review of previous studies retrieved from the PubMed, MEDLINE, and Embase databases published by February 1, 2020 was performed to collect patients with very-late-onset MADD (VLO-MADD, onset age > 60 years) globally and patients with late-onset MADD (LO-MADD, onset age <

MTHFR 677TT genotype and disease risk: is there a modulating role for B-vitamins?

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is a critical folate-metabolising enzyme which requires riboflavin as its co-factor. A common polymorphism (677C→T) in the MTHFR gene results in reduced MTHFR activity in vivo which in turn leads to impaired folate metabolism and elevated homocysteine concentrations. Homozygosity for this polymorphism (TT genotype) is associated with an increased risk of a number of conditions including heart disease and stroke, but there is considerable variability in the extent of excess risk in various reports. The present review will explore the evidence which su

Effect of low-dosage vitamin A and riboflavin on iron-folate supplementation in anaemic pregnant women.

A double-blind, placebo, controlled trial was conducted in Banyudono subdistrict, Boyolali regency, Central Java province, Indonesia. The aim of the study was to determine whether adding low-dosage vitamin A and riboflavin can enhance the effect of iron-folate supplementation in anaemic pregnant women. From July to November 2000, 202 pregnant women were screened for anaemia (haemoglobin < 11.0 g/dL). One hundred and three pregnant women (51%) were found to be anaemic and were then allocated alternately into four groups. Over a period of 60 days, group IF (n = 29) received iron-folate tablets (
