Zoonotic bacterial pathogens are a major concern for food safety, yet information regarding their occurrence in game meat remains fragmented. This systematic review synthesizes available data on Salmonella spp., Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), Listeria spp., Yersinia spp., and Campylobacter spp. in game meat from hunted wild ungulates. Relevant studies published between 2004 and 2024 were identified through structured database searches and screened using predefined criteria. Data on host species, diagnostic methods, prevalence estimates, isolate characterization, and antimicrobi…

PPA exceeded 85% for most targets, except for sapovirus. Salmonella spp., and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (stx1, stx2) (STEC) accounted for most discordant results, often associated with low pathogen loads or analytical variability. After discrepancy resolution, both assays demonstrated comparable diagnostic performance, with a substan …

Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a thrombotic microangiopathy primarily affecting the kidneys, can also involve the central nervous system (CNS), often leading to significant morbidity and mortality. Neurologic manifestations are among the most severe extra-renal complications, particularly in children and during outbreaks of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC)-associated HUS (typical (tHUS)). This review explores the clinical spectrum, pathophysiology, diagnostic workup, and age-specific outcomes of neurologic involvement in both typical (tHUS) and atypical (aHUS). Neurologic compli…

BACKGROUND: Giant cell myocarditis (GCM) is a rare but well-known cause of fulminant myocarditis. Despite optimal medical therapy, many patients progress to orthotopic heart transplant (OHT). We present a case of recurrent GCM following OHT, including complex considerations in patient management and infectious sequelae.

Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) in the kidney represents the most severe manifestation of kidney microvascular endothelial injury. Despite the source of the inciting event, the diverse clinical forms of kidney TMA share dysregulation of endothelial cell transcripts and complement activation. Here, we show that endothelial-specific knockdown of Krüppel-Like Factor 4 (Klf4)ΔEC, an anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic zinc-finger transcription factor, increases the susceptibility to glomerular endothelial injury and microangiopathy in two genetic murine models that included endothelial nitric ox

The objectives of this study were (a) to detect gastrointestinal pathogens in faecal samples of sheep and goats using the FilmArray® GI Panel and (b) to evaluate factors that were associated with their presence. Faecal samples from ewes or does in 70 sheep flocks and 24 goat herds in Greece were tested for the presence of 22 gastrointestinal pathogens by means of the BioFire® FilmArray® Gastrointestinal (GI) Panel. The most frequently detected pathogens were Shiga-like toxin-producing Escherichia coli stx1/stx2 (94.7% of farms), Giardia lamblia (59.6%), and Campylobacter spp. (50.0% of farms).

INTRODUCTION: Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) is a major etiologic agent among the pathogens that cause diarrhea in children.
METHODOLOGY: To investigate the presence and pathotypes of DEC in children under five years of age, living in the province of Khouzestan, Iran. 208 diarrhea stool samples were screened by multiplex-PCR. The isolated DEC isolates were investigated for resistance to various antimicrobials including the production of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and phylogenetic groups were determined.
RESULTS: DEC isolates were identified in 54 (26%) diarrhea samples,

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) can be triggered by Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection or it can be defined as atypical HUS (aHUS) if it is related to uncontrolled complement activation. aHUS is characterized by a high incidence of recurrence after kidney transplantation, and it can also occur de novo in transplant recipients. Eculizumab is used both to prevent and to treat aHUS following kidney transplantation. In this paper, we report our centre experience and we present 4 cases of HUS in patients who underwent kidney transplantation.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli O157:H7 (O157) are zoonotic foodborne pathogens and of major public health concern that cause considerable intestinal and extra-intestinal illnesses in humans. O157 colonize the recto-anal junction (RAJ) of asymptomatic cattle who shed the bacterium into the environment through fecal matter. A small subset of cattle, termed super-shedders (SS), excrete O157 at a rate (≥ 104 CFU/g of feces) that is several orders of magnitude greater than other colonized cattle and play a major role in the prevalence and transmission of O157. To better understand microbial…

BACKGROUND: Shiga toxin producing Escherichia coli O157 can cause severe bloody diarrhea and haemolytic uraemic syndrome. Phage typing of E. coli O157 facilitates public health surveillance and outbreak investigations, certain phage types are more likely to occupy specific niches and are associated with specific age groups and disease severity. The aim of this study was to analyse the genome sequences of 16 (fourteen T4 and two T7) E. coli O157 typing phages and to determine the genes responsible for the subtle differences in phage type profiles.
RESULTS: The typing phages were sequenced usin…
